http://steamcommunity.com/groups/idlemastery#announcements/detail/666902171288054077

In light of the upcoming Steam Marketplace changes next week, I’ve decided to discontinue working on and supporting Steam Idle Master. As someone who is unable to use the mobile authenticator, having trading cards put on hold for 15 days prior to being listed in the market makes the proposition of selling them a difficult one. As most of you know, the value of each card can fluctuate wildly in that amount of time.

This, bundled with additional security measures Valve has put in place are a good step forward in that they make Steam more safe for its users. For me personally, the cost of this safety is inconvenience. For people in my position who are unable to use the mobile authenticator, this effectively makes idling for and selling Steam Trading Cards a futile effort.

Idle Master started out as and always has been a hobby project. My personal attitude towards it has always been “It’s something I built for myself that I find useful, others probably will too”. The first part of that statement, however, is no longer true.

Going forward: I will be updating the Idle Master homepage so that the “Download” button links directly to the portable version of Idle Master. The homepage will remain online for the foreseeable future, but I’ll be adding a statement to the site that the program has been discontinued and is no longer being supported.

The source code for Idle Master is and will remain available on Github under an open source license.

Finally, I would like to say “Thank you” to all of Idle Master’s users and fans. Without you, a project like this couldn’t have been as successful as it was. For those of you who this security change won’t affect: happy idling in the future!

ASF also does both the farming AND mobile auth.
All people really need is a phone that can get texts, hell technically all they NEED it for is a phone that can get ONE text to activate the mobile auth, after that do it all via whatever you want too on your computer.

Are you saying it can be used on bar phone ?
Or do you mean that desktop version authenicator for the pc that's on github?

I have a pc and 3g dongle for internet .
I also have a bar phone but i didn't think you could use that for the steam authentication.

I like that he's going out with class. There's no big rant about the changes like so many are doing. It's about security. Sure a few people aren't gonna make it, but given how big the current issues are in Steam with account stealing and such, they really had to do something.
That and the number of people without a phone that can get texts, and the ability to run any of the several ways to get the auth codes on your desktop, is Very small.

What I don't understand is how in this day and age people don't have a smart phone with any sim in .... But they have internet and a gaming PC ? Any one explain please ? Do free Sims and junk smart phones not exist globally ?

For people with a small budget a smartphone is an after thought. Priorities man, a smartphone doesn't replace a PC or a gaming PC, or internet. And yes, I'm one of those individuals who can't afford to buy one yet.

There is no such thing as a free sim here, the only way to have a working sim is to buy one and associate it with a pricy plan.

As far as smartphones go, not everyone can afford or even wants one. Then there are the people who chose to purchase Windows phones where the activator is not even available.

Sure I understand that, hell my smart phone I don't even want. I know people should not need one to trade but I see this weird logic ... Same with justifying pirating games that it's unaffordable to them yet to use steam they have a gaming PC + 100s of games + internet etc (very expensive in my country compared to most of the world) ??

As far as utility they say 95% are now using mobile authentification ...... To stop most of the 77k accounts hacks a month seems a small price.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Just because you have a PC doesn't mean you have money left to afford a smartphone. (Especially if you're a younger person who had the PC purchased by a parent.) There's also those who simply refuse to own one for whatever reason or who chose the "wrong" brand/system.

And choosing not to own a specific piece of technology is hardly the same as software theft. For me it's mostly an annoyance since I have a smartphone and the authenticator, but I understand how much of a pain it can be for someone who doesn't meet the requirements for it.

Do you appreciate the utility for the 95% ? Most steam users don't trade or give two pennies for cards as well.

Trade and market holds increased to 15 days to "provide a way to continue to exchange items" for "users who have yet to transition to the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator"... Yeah right

Fuck you Valve

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

To be fair, something people seem to be skipping when they read/post about it..
Valve says UP TO 15 days. Not that it WILL be 15 days. Which means it might end up being 15 days for high value/rare items, where as cheap cards and such might be far less. Lot of people jumping the gun imho.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, "up to" will be 15 days every time. That's just PR lingo.

It's "up to three days" right now and that means 72 hours on the spot every single time for every trade.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Like how trade holds were "up to" 72 hours, yet mysteriously 100% of the ones that were not between long-time friends somehow managed to have this upper "limit"? :)

Permalink

Up to 15 days means:

  • If you've been friends for > 1 year: 1 day
  • Else: 15 days
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Pretty sure it will be similar system to one now, where you have 1 day escrow for 1-year friends and 3 days for rest.

So, week for long-friends and 15 days for others.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Trade hold duration will be increased to 15 days (for long-time Steam friends the duration will remain 1 day)
Listing on the Steam Community Market will have a hold of 15 days before an item can be sold
So we'll be adjusting the system to accommodate the majority of customers by increasing trade holds to 15 days.

A delay to catch and stop item theft
If a user trading away or selling items hasn't had their account protected by a Mobile Authenticator for the past 7 days:
Trades: item delivery from completed trades will be delayed by Steam for up to 3 days
Market: starting March 9th, sell listings will be held by Steam before they are posted, for up to 15 days

I can definitely see the day coming when non-mobile-authentication users won't be able to trade or use the market at all. I'm sure that's the long-term plan here, and they are doing it in increments so that everyone doesn't totally freak out instantly.

Well, if MS and Sony can ask you to pay monthly just to play the games you purchased, why wouldn't Valve? Just imagine: if they put a pay-to-play model on CS:GO, Russia would either go bankrupt or the player base would drop below a quarter. :D

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

They can also ban all non-english native speakers, as people won't be able to read properly their TL;DR messages AND they fucked up some volountary translations teams (I'm in Polish one, just few suggestion made by me were approved in February, they are all pending. Nothing is on time and quere of untranslated tokens is growing. I don't even want to go there at this point knowing that nothing is pushed further at this point). Spanish translation team is non-existent at this point.

So that way they could effectively ban all russian CS:GO players, by means of protecting american users from non native speaking trolls D:

Joking aside, they'd never do it. That would pretty much remove most sellers from the CS:GO item market, and we all know that this is where a good part of their income comes from.

Since when does Sony/Microsoft charge to play games??

They charge for online services, you know the downloading of updates and so forth.

Anyhow you do not have to pay anything to play games on Play Station/Xbox as long as you do not want to play online. So please do not pass wrong info and make it seem like you have to pay to play any game.

It cost money to host and run servers..of course they have to pay,but in no way are you being forced to pay to just play a game only if you want to go online.

Most steam games are p2p because well it cost nothing to host or use.The down side though is you get more drops and lag because the host or others playing have bad internet or are to far away.I rather pay a fee so much a year to get dedicated servers then deal with P2P crap in some games like GTA V,or pretty much any pvp online game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

And in some cases the online part is the game. Like how you need to have this premium service to have access to the raid missions in Destiny (or at least this was the setup when they unlocked the raids). Or heck, when games ask for this service to just play a PvP match in case of a tournament fighter like the newer Godzilla games (you cannot play with your buddy sitting next to you without Gold/Plus). Valve could do the same: you can play CS:GO/TF2 as much as you want offline against bots, but if you want to go online, you need a monthly "Steam Elite" subscription. After all, nobody ever said that you must play CS only online.

Yes, 15 days before the cards you put up on the market actually become visible for the buyers. Change the price because you overshot it? Next 15 days. Price went up to double after the initial rush but you had it listed for half? Well, you made someone super happy while you lost potential profits.

Well, yeah. I mean, I just open a game I want to "unlock achievements" and then simply never close the window. As far as I know, as long as you have a online connection and you have the game "open" on SAM. It'll mine cards out of it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

i didnt know that and it takes long to drop cards ?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Same as other ways (IM, Archie).

Difference is, with SAM you have to manually change games.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't like "same" word here.

IM and SAM use simulating-game method, which launches some process, then hooks it to steam with steamworks DLL, and tells steam that it's legit game.

ASF is independent mini steam-client which logs in to your account and farms it. It's like you'd ask your brother/sister to turn on second PC and farm your steam cards while you're not playing.

Objective is similar, but the way how all of those programs achieve their goal is totally different. And because ASF is independent of steam client, I have full control how it behaves, which includes some anti-fuckup code that will e.g. restart farming when steam goes down.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So does this mean because you don't simulate that all games I want to idle have to be downloaded and installed?
