This site is so slow all the time if it even loads most times, how about you put a DONATE button somewhere so we all can chip in and cg/owners ect can buy better hosting

Could be because the site uses steam web for user information. If steam blows up, steamgifts will become slow too.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Isn't it SLOW enough at all times?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Then we should buy up all the hats in Mann Co. store, to support Valve. :3

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nah, valve will blow then all money on crappy controllers and boxes.

Who cares about games that actually give them profits, TF2 servers that died 3 weeks ago during Christmas are STILL not back up :|

1 decade ago

idk, but all the servers are up for me right now.

1 decade ago

It's not like Valve isnt making profits with Steam XD

But yeah, some normal server support and a new source engine would be good:)

So essentially, STEAM needs better hossting

Yeah, Here and steamtrades, I have to refresh a minimum of 4-5 times to finally get a page working.

1 decade ago

I'd say this site needs optimization, bug fixes and design changes before better hosting.

Exactly this, and steamtrades too, both are poorly designed.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What is the problemm with the design?
I like how the site looks like.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

design != only looks

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Then you mean the internal workings of the site?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Exactly. I was not talking about the looks (which I like, by the way). I think this site was well thought and decently implemented, but never moved on from release 1.0, despite some obvious flaws. For example, the Replies function is half-broken, making Steamtrades harder to use. And all functions people get from the SG+ addon should be implemented server-side. As a guess, I would also say the database design could use some work.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

for example the fact that to do any basic search or filtering on site you have to use addons. And using filterig addon doesn't mean that a load of unnecessary data is first downloaded and only then filtered, so it gives massive loads to server anyway. Even if SG+ shows you 3 GAs per page, the site must send you data about all 50 GAs nonetheless b4 they get filtered.

Other thing? Search functions. Searching forums is a joke - to find posts by user you must use google outside of SG and then try categorizing it etc. And it can be pain in the arse for users with thousands of comments. Why not simple use implemented Google Search every serious forum uses anyway? Whole load of serching is on google side anyway. Not being able to search topics by user is even worse case on ST, as you would this way find why he has negative rep. Did he made shady deal, or is it just some hater -reping?

And many others ;) SG has a nice, simplistic art-design, but very poor usage-design.

Well, the fact we have to install user made plugins to have various features that should have been part of the original site, I'd say there is plenty to do.

cg always said he does not want a donate button.

Instead, if you want to help, disable Ad-Block (if you haven't already) and/or click on the ads if you're planing to buy anything from the advertised sites anyway.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

True, do disable adblock if you haven't, the ads on this website are really minor ads anyways, and no pop-ups.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

How to disable it only for SG?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If using Adblock+, click on the adblock icon (in the addon bar) and tick "disable for steamgifts.com" or something like that

1 decade ago
Permalink

in firefox: click Tools/AdblockPlus/Disable on steamgifts.com only

you could just disable it all together and not leech off of any website...

1 decade ago

It's okay to leech from the users on the site, just not the actual site itself?

Disabling Adblock will support the site, but in turn increases load time.

Ad revenue with 0 transparency. And cg is very much a loner which doesn't make it easy to help/get updates/#change. As for buying from ads, this is what I get so no: http://i.imgur.com/UATyfWO.jpg

This is pretty much why I disable them everywhere. "Minor" or not, I do not need or want to see these kind of things on a site about video games. I do not understand why he wouldn't want to implement a donate button unless it has to do with more work or something. Why not make it add to CV? It wont be beneficial due to sales giving more cv cheaper, but it will make it still worth while.

IIRC what cg told me, we're not even using half of our server capacity.

The slowness is due to how the site and the database are designed, and cg is working on optimizing them both.
