Do you enjoy being able to kill anyone you want? I always love to try to kill random people, and sometimes I actually am, which is pretty fun! What are your favorite games where this can happen? There are only 2 games I can think of-

  • Half-Life: Blueshift
  • Fallout 3

Here are some screenshots of the fun I've had- Share your own!

With this character's death, the thread of prophecy is severed.
Restore a saved game to restore the weave of fate,
or persist in the doomed world you have created.

Which was false in half the cases anyway. Also, annoying - you could have received the message while being on the other end of the island from the character in question sometimes. Though, was fun first two times, I admit.

Some NPCs can't be killed.

Actually they can, you just get a message saying something like you have broken the strands of fate, do you wish to continuecontinue in this doomed world. In later TES games you can't kill some NPCs.

Dishonored. Though often you get a game over screen for killing someone vital to the story.

Even there you can't kill the little empress though. I was unloading lots of punishment at her and she took it like a champ. But otherwise you're right (not sure about DLCs haven't played them yet)

Pretty sure you can kill her (or at least cause her to die) in the high chaos version of the last level which I did on my 'kill everyone I can' run.

However that same level makes it impossible to kill everyone and leave the level empty, as in certain areas enemies seemed to keep respawning. I was quite disappointed.

Oh okay I haven't actually finished it on high chaos (yet). I meant an earlier part, but not the prologue. Not sure there, I didn't really try to kill anyone in prologue but I happened to jump around and jumped on someone's head and it was a game over anyway after they got angry at me :D

-Start Fallout 2
-Get in Den
-Clear your inventory, keep only dynamite with timer
-Set the timer and run around children
-They pickpocket your bomb
-Fun ensured

Fallout 3 has TONS of people you can't kill. :p

Morrowind on the other hand is a perfect example of what you're asking for, everything can die, even the gods. :p

Other good examples are Fallout 1 and 2, Postal 2 and Baldur's Gate.

I prefer the Fallouts because they actually adapt to you killing everybody in a lot of circumstances.

Ahhh yeah! Right at the end of my first playthrough I went back and murdered everyone I could to get their unique gear. Every playthrough after I've been more selective about who I'm naughty or nice too.

With mods enabled, you shouldbe able to kill everyone in all Bethesda games.
You can kill nearly everyone in all GTA/SR/SD/etc. type games except quest/story mobs.

I don't necessarily have a problem with being able to kill anyone, including children. The problem that arises with your premise is that it's almost impossible to code for events where a character who features in the story gets killed. I'm thinking along the lines of someone who gives you a mission, or who is otherwise crucial to the plot later on. You'd seemingly have to either detect hen they died and have branching plotlines for the rest of the entire game: a lot of code and additional writing, acting, etc., or else you'd have to inexplicably end the game right then and there. In the end, the only feasible solution is to, well, not allow them to be killed. Not in terms of 'if you shoot them, nothing will happen', but in terms of a mission failure and their eventual off-screen resurrection so you can play through it again.

That line was not in the game at launch, resulting in much frustration for people who enjoyed randomly killing people, and who later found out that they had made it impossible to progress any further in the main storyline.

It gets boring rather quickly. Mainly because games usually don't have all that many NPC's and after a good refreshing massacre you'll find yourself in a barren world with nothing to do.
