I've got an old 3G that I'd like to use wifi sync on, so I can leave it in my car in the driveway and add music to it from my bedroom. I gather there isn't an Appley way to do this, so I take it I need to jailbreak this bastard somehow? I've never done that before. Can anyone point me to a (preferably mac but acceptably windows) way to do this? Grazie.

I used Sn0wbreeze. It was the easiest and the one that worked for me after a few days of failing with other software. It pretty much does the work for you and all you have to do is find the correct update file. I'm not sure if it works with mac but for sure with windows.

You can use greenpoison or redsn0w to jailbreak, it should be easy to do. As for wifi sync, only the iPhone 4S can do that without jailbreaking. Other iPhone models have to get a software from Cydia store to do that.

I'm fine with using Cydia software for it, and I'm fine with it being slow as dirt. I basically want to use this 3G as an 8GB wireless iPod for my new car. THAT SAID, can iPod Touch's use wifi sync? If so, I can probably nab one of those on the cheap and skip the hassle with this 3G. I feel so clueless, I don't pay attention to the iDevices and their capabilities.

I think the iPod Touch with iOS 5.0 min can wifi sync. If you want to try out, go ahead.

Dependent on the firmware and the type of iPhone, iPod, iPad you have. If your looking for an efficient way to JailBreak any apple device is to first do some research. At the moment redsn0w has the most recent firmware jailbroken (iOS 5) they are currently working on the iOS 5.1 firmware and will hopefully release an untethered jailbreak for it soon.

Here are the types of jailbreak that is around at the moment:

Tethered: Basically you do not want to turn off your apple device when you have this type of jailbreak. If the device does turn off you will have to load redsn0w and reboot the device through that.

Semi-tethered: Not too sure what this one does, however i believe it is a more stable tether jailbreak and will allow you to run apps smoother compared to a tethered jailbreak

Untethered: This will allow you device to function like it would normally however it will be jailbroken, you may turn off the device as you please, you will not need redsn0w to reboot it. In other words this is the best type of jailbreak you can use.

Yes I have jailbroken apple devices many times in the past.

I think you can open up jailbreakme.com (or jailbreak.me) directly on your iPhone with the official web browser. It's an automated process, but it doesn't work with iOS 5.0 and above (I recall 3G's have stopped at 4.X anyway).

Alternatively, you could always rob a bank, leave the iPhone there with a pic of a cartoon burglar as the background, and hope for the best. When the judge sentences it to life, you drive there and during visiting hours and you quickly shove it in your pocket. Then you walk out, and you've got your jailbroken device.

Just out of curiosity (I don't own an Iphone), what's the disadvantage of Jail-breaking a device?

Absolutely none :D

The whole point of a jailbreak is to allow you to use your device any way you want. In essence, the jailbreak only changes the core of the iPhone, and for example allows you to change your provider.

Normally though a jailbreak also comes with Cydia, which is a third-party open store. There's a lot of good stuff on there but since anyone can put their app up, you have to add their repository (an URL) first and then you have access to their apps.

Well, sometimes when I launch an app it freezes and exits, but I'm not sure it's related to the jailbreak.
