First of all. Sorry for my english! I know it really bad
I've just bought hitman absolution on HB few days ago and i'm a little disapointed. Not because it's not like others hitman game, because of ingame lacking animation. examples: stupid randoll effect, weapons disappeared right in 47's hand , no C4-plan animation, ugly too 'flat' crouch animation and WHY THE FUCK IS THERE NO STAIR WALKING ANIMATION? The only thing i love is bullet hole wounded effect as i always love blood decal ingame
I look back to others pc game and wonder: wat game had good walking stair animation? Dragon age inquisition, GTA 4 or V in march. is this the end? I appreciate if you could list more game got it.

Do you think walking stair animations is important to have a realistic ingame experience?

To have a realistic in-game experience? Yes.
To have an overall great in-game experience? Not necessarily.

The first thing that came to my mind was the animation when you opened a door in Dino Crisis, also remembered the stairs animation in Resident evil 3, so yeah, It's important for the realistic part

Metal Gear Solid 2 did a pretty good job, At least my vague and nostalgic memories tell me that :D

This is actually one of the big reasons why GTA4 was a big hit. All of those live procedurally generated tweens really bring a character to life, and makes for more immersion in everything, be it action or random comedic moments. Now if only we could see that Euphoria system in more games...

Yea. that Euphoria system happens in max payne 3 and GTA V too. First time saw this. i think it's a pure magic ya know

It depends on what you mean by "realistic stair animations." If you mean prerendered cutscenes, then of course. If you mean in-game cutscenes, then yes. If you mean gameplay animations, then no. Why no? Because that is largely trivial and an approximation of realistic stair animations which give the illusion of ascent or descent is good enough. To make sure every footfall hits a step (and thus that tripping could occur) would cause stairs to be more of an obstacle than a path. Anyway, I've yet to encounter a game which does that and question whether a game could without making the hitboxes conflict so much as to break the asset.

You know what. Today I found The Order 1866 has the best stair walking animations and alot of bad review too. haha

I agree with this. While realistic physics for ascending and descending stairs would be neat, it would be a terrible use of processing power and developer's time, both of which could be better spent on things that are actually important to the core gameplay. Its similar to when developers spend too much time on the physics of clothing flapping. While its a nice touch, its of so little importance.

Even Hitman Blood Money had animations for hiding / drawing your weapon and that game is from 2006. Don't know why they removed them.

I think animation is more important than graphics. Gameplay > animation > graphics.

Nah, I'd rather faster gameplay but cutting some of the extraneous animations. Perfectly happy for the game to transition to the next screen when the character approaches the stairs.

Well hmm. I'd say general animations (not just stairs) are pretty important. But then i can forgive Hitman Absolution for not having that simply because i had never cared to notice it until you pointed it out. Sometimes realistic experiences are overrated, hell it can get pretty boring if it is too real.

It always pains me to see beautifully crafted immersive game where the character suddenly "half-hovers" up the stairs or pulls a MG out of his ass...
