I am looking for a co-op or multiplayer game on steam that would be fun to play with a friend.

Digging around while chatting, sharing the multiple copies of the stuff you find during exploration, building a base together, taking turns in making gear, helping you get your stuff back if you are playing medium-core...

I've been playing Terraria and Sanctum with my friends lately. Good times. Sanctum is pretty straight forward FPS/Tower Defense, while Terraria requires a bit of research to experience what the game really has to offer.

Some of the obvious awesome stuff had already been said below like Portal 2, Serious Sam and Terraria, but you might like Lost Planet 2 (I loved it, huge boss fights, fast frantic gameplay, great graphics, big importance of cooperation and tons of unlockable stuff hugely underrated imho) and Kane & Lynch 1 & 2 is actually pretty fun too with a friend. Magicka is chaotic fun all around as well.

Lost Planet 2 co-op was AWESOME! We really did have a blast playing that game, especially the boss fights. The game was hell on single player, but so much fun co-op.

Yeah, single-player is a test of patience (that giant sand worm boss with the moving train at the desert is multitask rush hell, co-op is way more fun on that level and easier on one's soul :V) but it definitely is one of the best co-op games out there especially when you get together a full squad of buddies on Hard/Extreme difficulty.

Lost Planet 2 is a great game. Wish I could co-op with it, but I made the mistake of getting it for 360 without having and XBox Live account. I also strongly agree with Magicka. It's so much easier and more enjoyable when played with friends.

I second this. Thousands of hours of fun.

Killing Floor is better than L4D2 and has a community that is actually fun to play with instead of votekick happy

Should try some custom survival maps for l4d2 from fpsbanana.com radio tower one is really fun better than killing floor to be sure.

I'm a huge co-op nut myself. Avoiding the games already mentioned, I would say Trine (only local I think, three player), Atom Zombie Smasher (local, three player), any Half Life (two or later) with Synergy, and you can rig Unreal Tournament 3 (and pretty much any mod) for four-player local co-op.

I don't have a whole lot on my account right now, but my favorite so far is Terraria. I have a blast playing with friends on it, it offers a lot of entertainment, and they add more content regularly, which makes things more interesting. One fault with it however is that it has that connect direct to ip function which requires ports to be forwarded/use of hamachi.
