Some of the obvious awesome stuff had already been said below like Portal 2, Serious Sam and Terraria, but you might like Lost Planet 2 (I loved it, huge boss fights, fast frantic gameplay, great graphics, big importance of cooperation and tons of unlockable stuff hugely underrated imho) and Kane & Lynch 1 & 2 is actually pretty fun too with a friend. Magicka is chaotic fun all around as well.

Yeah, single-player is a test of patience (that giant sand worm boss with the moving train at the desert is multitask rush hell, co-op is way more fun on that level and easier on one's soul :V) but it definitely is one of the best co-op games out there especially when you get together a full squad of buddies on Hard/Extreme difficulty.

Lost Planet 2 is a great game. Wish I could co-op with it, but I made the mistake of getting it for 360 without having and XBox Live account. I also strongly agree with Magicka. It's so much easier and more enjoyable when played with friends.

Borderlands, Borderlands, Borderlands and Borderlands.

On Steam, TF2. Off Steam, OpenTTD or King Arthur's Gold.

I'm a huge co-op nut myself. Avoiding the games already mentioned, I would say Trine (only local I think, three player), Atom Zombie Smasher (local, three player), any Half Life (two or later) with Synergy, and you can rig Unreal Tournament 3 (and pretty much any mod) for four-player local co-op.

Whoops, forgot Mount & Blade: Warband. That game has ridiculously fun multiplayer.

I don't have a whole lot on my account right now, but my favorite so far is Terraria. I have a blast playing with friends on it, it offers a lot of entertainment, and they add more content regularly, which makes things more interesting. One fault with it however is that it has that connect direct to ip function which requires ports to be forwarded/use of hamachi.

I am looking for a co-op or multiplayer game on steam that would be fun to play with a friend.
