Here's an interesting article

Just a little poll, I'm curious :)

What's your opinion on trading cards?

Do you collect them? Or you're just farming cards from games without playing them and selling them for profit?

Is a game with trading cards more compelling for you?

Do you think the whole trading card thing should be scrapped and cards/badges are silly?

I think that the whole trading card thing is a great idea, and collecting them and crafting badges is so much fun :D

I would like to print them, but still looking for an album that's suitable.

I really like the idea of trading cards, too. I love farming them and crafting a badge or two.

Trading cards can also be a great way how to bring attention to underrated games.

I always sell them to get games cheaper. I don't care about the collecting aspect at all.

+1. Got at least half a dozen free games this way by leaping on 75-90% off sales (not to mention some cheap TF2 items).

yay, I only make badges for games that I really liked alot, not for every game, other cards I sell them so I can buy the cards that I'm interested in, or sometimes selling cards helps for buying Tods or TF2 keys.

Same. Although I still haven't any game badges, but I'm trying to get La-Mulana's.

It's a good idea. If you're into collecting cards/badges it's a win for you. If you're not it's still a win for you cause you can sell them and buy games with that money.

My intention is to collect them, but I often find myself being too lazy to do the necessary trades to complete sets.

I do sometimes find games with cards more compelling. If a game cost less than £1 on a sale and has cards I will buy it no matter what. When weighing up if I want to buy a bundle or not, I put the same £1 value on the games with cards even if it's not a game that I know of, or particularly want. At that kind of price with cards I'm willing to give things a try.

I don't think they should be scrapped. Devs make money out of it through potential extra game sales if they have cards from people like me and they get a penny or two when a card is sold too, I believe. They very much are silly if analysing them. Silly can be and is often fun.

I bought the Blink "Trading Cards" Bundle for $4.99, sold all the cards and ended up with around $7-8.

Yay, I very much think cards/badges are silly, but I see the reasoning behind introducing them, so I don't blame Lord Gaben. Lots of money to be made by the stupidity of people with too much of it (money and/or stupidity).
I only crafted a badge once to level up to 10, so I would get more booster packs = moar money = moar games for moar cheaper, but otherwise, I instantly sell them.

trading cards are great because it's a secondary way for the developers to make money off their games if the cards get sold, so i'm cool with that :)

i end up screening new bundles just to see how much of the games in there have cards... :3

as for the cards themselves, if i decide i like the game or the badge for the game, or if i find the badge an easy one to aim for, i aim to craft it :)

any others, i hold onto them first and sell some of them if there's a game on my wishlist that goes on sale, or use those to trade for the sets i want to craft

Obviously we love them because we can profit off of them or collect them and that's great. The article is addressing the developers' problems.

but he's right, I find myself just running games in the background to grab the card and then forget to play them later. (like Bastion, which I'm glad I got around playing) I don't know about you but most people are missing out on great games because of card profits.

People are backlogging games because of steam sales and bundles, not because of trading cards. People clearly run games in the background to get cards, but if they didn't want to play the game with cards, they wouldn't want to play the game without cards.

Aawww, this reminded me I still need to finish They Bleed Pixels ... Such a lovely game with nice mechanics.
Btw, steam trading cards are just the latest way of money grabbing from Valve, nothing more or less, and they suck. (Brb, buying cards.)

I can see both sides of this argument. For me personally there is no difference between a card and a non card game - I buy a game if I want it and I only check if it has cards later. I collect them and sell the duplicates to craft badges ( I have managed a few so far) but I haven't put any of my own money into buying them and OCD crafting ( although I would theoretically like to craft them all at level 1 at least).
I do run some in the background to get all the card drops so that I will be eligible for a booster pack, but I will get around to playing them properly eventually, when I have the time and will ( like I am doing with nightmares from the deep this week for example).

I've recently become addicted to trading cards. I crafted two badges yesterday alone.

For me, cards are a source of Steam wallet, so I can't be against them. I don't see the point in crafting and so on, but... evidently other people do, and that's fine.

The article is a good read, but it's outdated. Back then cards were not common and prices were often insane, so the points made by the dev have much less weight now.

I love trading cards. Probably a little too much - it's a constant challenge not to just buy steam credit for them - I know in my heart they are pointless really but I want them!

The best part of Steam Trading Cards is that I can sell them :D

I love them but also hate that they profit a few cents from every sale in the marketplace. They are raking in the bucks on all those sales!

At one point, I did collect a few cards to make badges. Now, collecting cards/badges is pointless to me, so pretty much I sell any cards I receive. I'd rather have like $.30 to put towards a future purchase than have a useless badge. However, I do not just buy or play a game for the cards though.

I used to craft badges for every game in my library that had cards(I even bought cheap cards for games I didn't own), but I slowed down right now and I only craft badges for games that I like.

"Sternberg recalls seeing They Bleed Pixels cards listed on the Market for over $10; foil cards have sold for as much as 30 bucks. The game itself costs $9.99."

This article is old. Supply has gone way up and games don't even come close to $10 for a badge, let alone a card. Quite often each card is 10-15 cents. Foils I don't know so much about, but the few I've gotten tend to sell around a dollar.

I sold a foil from a bundled game for $5 (Rena from MacGuffin's Curse) a few days ago, I was surprised.

I had a foil card worth 1.80€, it's price dropped to 0.36€ three days ago and I still can't sell it. (there are only 8 of this card on the market)

I've got a particular foil from The Cat Lady (bundled numerous times) that I've had on and off the market lately. The last one sold for $9.19. There's been a small flood of them since the game appeared in another bundle yesterday (The Encore Indie Gala bundle) and there's now 7 on the market instead of the usual 2 or 3. Lowest asking price last time I looked was $7.50 and falling. Pulled mine for now, going to monitor what happens.

Anyway, yeah, some foils, even from bundle games can go for quite a bit.
