I have been out of the MMO scene for a long time. I used to play Korean MMO's that were typically grind fests (I liked them). I am looking for a decent MMO to play that isn't just questing. I used to play Kal Online and Zu Online and liked both very much. I have played Neverwinter but the endgame sucked once I hit the max level. Anyone know of any good MMO's out there?

Same, I want to go back to MMO this spring and summer but I can't find a good one. I could go back and play the mmo's I've played before since they're still alive, but those mmos depends entirely on playerbase population. It doesn't have it's previous magic on it,

RF Online - few players means boring race wars, more bullies and less patrolling to guard the area.
Ran Online - Partycentric levelling system, focused on pvp party defending a farm/levelling/loot location. If there's only a few players, then it's not fun anymore.

I'm currently looking at ArcheAge right now (close beta), but it looks like it's gonna be a subscription based so I'm not looking forward on playing it in the future.

I'm not sure if it even really would fall under MMO, but I've been playing Phantasy Star Online 2 a decent bit lately. It's a fun little game, though it more or less revolves entirely around level grinding. It also has TF2 Hat syndrome, but with female costumes instead.

I recommend Star Wars the Old Republic, its a wow clone with a lot of features that make it a fresh experience, like the dialogue, dark/ligh side choices, HD graphics, and the great space combat. Its not fun as a free player tho, i recommend at least going preferred status by buying something.

I would agree. SWTOR is insanely amazing.

I certainly enjoyed the dialogue & story but the combat felt too similar to WoW's "stand in one place and cast" routine.

It does feel restrictive as a free player so if you decide to stick with the game then buy a digipass (security key generator). It'll give you a small amount of Cartel Coins (their real money currency) every month which gets you preferred status and eventually pays for itself.

Well, the whole WoW experience is very prominent in SWTOR, but I recommend it just because of the Star Wars twist (and I'm a big Star Wars fan. :D).

Once you spend a little money for preferred status, the game is quite enjoyable. It's similar to WoW in many respects, but the combat is a bit more dynamic (you can move around and have to aim some skills to hit your target). End-game keeps changing, so I won't bother commenting on it, but most of the game is in the leveling up phase, anyway.

just to throw my 2 cents in I've been playing Final Fantasy 14: A realm reborn since launch and have been loving it. There's a good story line to follow, and the ability to level up every class and crafting profession on a single character is great. Althought I'm not sure they have a free trial out yet.

If you played Korean MMOs you probably know of Nexon. I have played their game, Vindictus, for about a year and a half now on and off. The game is very unique because it is a real time fighting game. A lot of people compare it to Monster Hunter. It's really fun but a couple warnings. First it's Nexon, their North American branch is terrible. They have bugs that have been there forever and never communicate. The second thing is there is a lot and I mean A LOT of luck involved in this game. A large portion of it is a big risk big reward kind of thing. There are things you could do that have chances of completely destroying your equipment. Also when/if you finally get to the end game it does get a little repetitive, but that's why you take breaks from it every now and then. Also this is on steam.
http://vindictus.nexon.net/

Another MMO that I really like is Realm of the Mad God. It is the first bullet hell MMO ever. It was originally played in a browser but was then also brought to steam. It's very simple and easy to learn but very very hard to master. When your character dies it's gone for good along with anything it was carrying. There is a chest that you can store stuff in but it only has 6 slots. Of course you can buy more with micro transactions but you can also make alternate accounts to hold your extra items as well.
http://www.realmofthemadgod.com/

Finally there is a game called Getamped 2. This is a game in which you purchase various accessories (things that you use to fight)in order to fight other players. It is purely PvP based. Each accessory has a different move set and style in how you should fight with it. I'm not really sure if this is considered an MMO but it's good nonetheless. It was also made in Korea.

One MMO that I found to be interest is Blade and Soul. While there isn't a NA/EU version out, there's the China and Korean version (though Korean is P2P I heard).

One thing I found interesting is how all of the outfits (which are called doboks) have no stat properties, which means you can wear anything you want. Which means that most of the stats are gained from leveling up, accessories, or a tile piece collection system called Bopae.

There are a decent amount of races + classes to choose from (there's even a race that's female only huehuehue). Some classes can only be played by certain races, but for the most part it seems to balance out.

As for skills, it has a somewhat unique skill tree for each skill. At first, you gain the base skill at certain levels, but once you reach a certain level, you're able to use skill points to upgrade your base skill through its skill tree to make the skill better.

Combat in Blade and Soul reminds me of TERA (though I have never played TERA). The combat utilizes combos, so in order to maximize damage, you would have to use certain skills and chain them.

There's also a good story behind the game, and some of the cutscenes ingame are nice. I believe there is an end game story for it, but I have yet to reach it.

And if none of the above convinces you, the graphics are better nice, and also the females and their decently large breast size (not as bad as something like Scarlet Blade, however ^_^) But if you take a look at this video, it says it all. One more thing, Korean version has boob jiggle physics, but China version does not.

But overall, it's a nice MMO, almost as good as Vindictus (which I played a lot of). While it's only released in China + Korea and even with the english patch I can understand little, I would recommend it if you have the time to make an account (instructions are easy to find on the internet). Also, an anime based on the game is currently airing, but it's kind of okay.

  1. There is an English version for Vindictus. 2. What is the anime called?

I know there's an english version, I played it on Steam with ~ 200 hours into it. Sorry I didn't make that clear. Though you can also play on Asian servers if you want to get an early start of what might eventually be released in the NA/EU.

As for the Blade and Soul anime, it's literally called Blade and Soul. Just google "Blade and Soul anime" and it should appear. Though the anime itself is okay, and the reviews from what I've seen are average.

If you're willing to pay for a first time payment and a sub, try Final Fantasy XIV. I normally hate games with global cool downs and that sort of thing, but I loved XIV because it has a good interface, intelligible design, and gameplay that isn't too terrible. Except for all the idiots. There are lots of idiots.

I was totally hooked on Champions Online for the longest time. City of Heroes/Villains and Champions Online really got me into the superhero flavour that I bypassed as a kid.

While the game now offers a F2P option, it limits your characters to pre-set archetypes and gives you a smaller pool of costume doodads to build your characters with. Have a look into it, and seriously consider purchasing a 1-month subscription so that you can freely pick your powers and perks when you level up. It won't be for everyone, but I absolutely adored "concepting" characters to fit weird and awesome backgrounds and themes, and the subscription gives a massive amount of costume options to play with too. Many of the characters me and a few others drummed up in that game served as prototypes for recurring characters in our various headcanons and stories.

It's not without it's flaws, but it'll always hold a big place in my heart. Besides, for an MMO it's playerbase was pretty cool. You still got your occasional tool or troll, and the PvP modes were subject to the usual power-plays and flavour-of-the-month behaviour, but most people had a sense of humour and were pretty chill over all. Though I stopped played a few months after F2P kicked in, so I wonder about the state of the community (though new players can't use global chat until their account is so many hours old, to prevent spam and try usher them towards paying attention to tutorials).

Perhaps look it up on youtube.

The other one I would suggest is APB. All Points Bulletin is a F2P action MMOG with optional pay-elements, which is pretty much just online cops-and-robbers. You pick either the vigilante or the criminal side, you customise your clothes and gear, then you go out into instances of big city districts and engage in closed-circuit missions for cash rewards and standing/respect with various contacts that supply you with leases to new weapons. By closed circuit, I mean that you have to set yourself to a 'ready mode' and the matchmaking system will arrange a team for you, and an opposing force. Once all are arranged, you will get buzzed into the mission, enabling you to damage all the involved players (and their vehicles). You can still get blindsided by other player vehicles, but it won't hurt you, just interfere with your driving.

The game is addictive and can be awesome fun, especially when you get friends involved with voice-chat, but it can also be incredibly frustrating and the fast time-to-kill gives it a very steep learning curve until you feel out how each weapon functions and excels. The player base here is also pretty damn toxic, with people often using various (counterable) abuses to try force a win, or generally being obnoxious and indignant when they lose. Being accused of hacking simply because you were spying on them from around a building corner, or opening fire when you hear them loudly clunk-climbing up a ladder is commonplace. While there are some pay-to-win elements, nearly every pay-only weapon is accessible through some form of in-game means. The starting weapon doesn't really excel at anything but is surprisingly capable and flexible (and I used an upgraded version of it as my main weapon for some time).

Failing all this, I would focus more on MMOs that have a one-time cost and no recurring subscription fee like Guild Wars 2 or Secret World.

I like Dragon Nest. The dungeon system was really unique; had lots of fun running through them multiple times.

Neverwinter isn't too bad.
Echoing the Star Wars MMO.
Played Eden Eternal for a bit, that was pretty decent. Liked the ability to change to whatever class you wanted to whenever.
Rift is pretty decent.

It is not. By no mean. This is not a problem of go or not again. This is not a MMO. You can even read what developers says about their game. And if you have played any ARPg, you can notice PoE is an action RPG, just like Diablo2 or torchlight is. Stop saying its a MMO when it is not.

Just from developers:

<<Path of Exile is not an MMORPG, it’s an online action RPG. Yes, it’s played online on persistent servers with thousands of other players, but we don’t want to call it an MMORPG because the term has become so closely associated with World of Warcraft clones - games that allow hundreds of players to play together in each area. Path of Exile limits the number of players in any one world area (a few dozen in towns, much less in actual wilderness areas) by instancing them. It also features visceral action combat that would not be easily to simulate on servers designed to handle many hundreds of players in one area. Although this is stated many times on our website and in interviews, many people still believe we’re making a traditional MMORPG. >>

So epic fail for you.

More info here:

http://pathofexile.wikia.com/wiki/Why_we_hate_being_called_an_MMORPG

And not, is not a MMO, again. If you have ever play one, and if you have ever play one ARPG, you can notice the difference.

Zu Online PS if you want to start from 0. (it's buggy and some features arent working properly or at all but with increased rates is fine).

TSW(The Secret World) is a nice MMO,with some interesting quests. But it's grindy as hell(like most of MMOs). On the other hand you pick your own skills and abilities(no classes).

Guild Wars 2 - PvE is fun till you explore everything(all maps, complete all dungeons) though dungeons are more like: stack, kill, repeat. If you are into PvP then GW2 may offer you a lot of fun(and rage) because of both sPvP and WvW

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

+1 to both tSW and GW2. Both are different from other MMO's in their approach and how you play them, so I really recommend you watch some videos of the gameplay to see what they're about.

The Secret World is something you might enjoy if you like puzzles and mysteries and figuring things out.

Guild Wars 2 appears to be another WoW-like, but that is both deceptive and unfortunate. If you approach the game the same way you do WoW (or any of its clones), you won't like it. If, on the other hand, you throw away mainstream concepts such as "I must do quests," or "I must level up," or even "I must experience the content in a particular order," then you will be free to explore the world any way you wish (which is entirely the point).
