Downtime and Missing Giveaway Entries

Hi SG, I have some bad news today. In short, it looks like we're going to end up with entries missing from recent giveaways due to corrupt data. At the moment, about 90% of giveaway entries are not listed on the site. The majority of them are available in archived backups, and I'm downloading those now to see how much data we'll be able to recover. However, I'm certain the most recent entries for open giveaways are no longer available. That means you'll need to reenter those giveaways if you were previously entered. All giveaways that were set to end today have been extended 7 hours to offset the time the site was offline. Also, I just added 150 points to every user (up to 300 max), to help people reenter a few more giveaways.

This comes at a bad time because we're getting ready to move data over to a new database structure to help avoid situations like this from occurring in the first place. Nonetheless, I apologize for any headaches this causes and I'll keep you posted on the recovery process!

Edit: We'll be able to recover 90% of giveaway entries, and they'll be transferred when the site is updated to v2.

yeah thanks for letting us know. im just having trouble finding a couple of the group giveaways and secret giveaways id entered, a couple only had 30-40 entries and were ending soon, so yeah...

Were the points used to enter returned as well or is that what the 150p is for?

If so, that's nice, but a shame for those of us who come by once a day to use our 300p.

they lost entries table, so caouldn't say which GAs had what entries so points couldn't be restored. So it's only these 150p, but there's nothing much they can do other than maybe getting this backup table - but it will still miss many GAs/entries and many will already end if/when they restore it.

Sucks but there's really not much to be done in this case.

They could have given 300p instead of 150p or even gone over the limit based on the situation.

I'll start the conspiracy theory...with so many points in circulation and points even being "stored" by old members they decided to "lose" all entries before the release of SGv2!

points stop regenerating at 300, hard limit is 350 (even if they would give you 1000000000 points you'd only have 350), changing hard limit would require rewriting SG source code and I guess that with corrupted entry table cg has more important things to do than changing code to give us more points.

It sucks but such things happens - even the biggest websites, internet-banking sites or massive internet monsters ;like FB/Google had their problems and errors every now and then. And this is a site created and managed by one single person - give a guy a break - one serious issue that only costed you bunch of free points in over 3 years of SG running is really not such a big deal as some people try to make it.

They could have given the 150P in parts throughout the day. They could have increased the P-generation for a day or two. Lots of things could have been done, but they didn't.

It's just an unfortunate situation all around. :-(

if you are eager to complain about things, then look for topics like ebola, wars etc instead of whining about points you got for free.

everybody lost all his entries, so you enter the games you really want with the points left and you have higher chances of winning than before, because there are less entries.

Yup. Giveaways are now closing that I previously had entries in, but I just don't have the points. I didn't get any of the 150P since I was already at 300 before the incident, so there's just not enough P to go around.

cq can you give another set of extra points please?
I'm desperately trying to catch up again on entering the giveaways I was in, but it are way too many.
Right now I don't even have enough points to enter back into all the private puzzle giveaways and group giveaways. Let alone into the lovely public giveaways I would like a chance for.
I think I lost a total of 2000-3000 points in this disaster.

150 free points just isn't enough to get back into it.

well, then just enter for the games you want most.

everyone lost points, so there are less entries and the winning chances per entrie are higher.

so get over it and stop whining

Thanks for the info! Worked a 14 hour day, then a 12 hour one, so was entering giveaways when I was rather tired. Thought I was crazy and didn't enter them at first ;-)

I'm still over 300 points away from having reentered all the public giveaways I was in before the data loss.

Annoying. But I'm expecting a surge of entries from the current Humble Bundle adds another game on wednesday, causing people to buy it and flood SteamGifts with games from it. Since I either own or don't want any of the games in it, that means a lot of points. So I should recover then.

Until then, I'll just make sure I have exactly 0 points unspent before going to bed.

Thanks for heads up,my entry list also got decreased. Its sad to not view old entries(some of them was not recivied/had bad guys)as a notebook for events you had,or creators/players themselves.

Looks like yesterday's restore was unsuccessful. My entry counts didn't get restored... thousands of entries lost forever I guess.
