The Binding of Isaac? You'd probably sink many, many hours into that game.

You made it further than me. 0.5h is all I made it through. I just really didn't care for the gameplay.

Off the top of my head, I'll say Bastion, Limbo, Terarria, Magicka, The Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy and Orcs Must die 1/2. Every single one of them is entertaining.

Limbo is very entertaining ( maybe not so much at the end)

But why are some of you talking about psychonauts and the witcher??? indie games lol?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Psychonauts isn't really indie since it had a publisher when it was first released. Double Fine is an indie dev nowadays though. As for The Witchers, they're indie because they don't have a publisher.

CDProject?

CD Projekt RED is both the developer and the publisher, which makes them indie.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Atari is publisher. Witcher IS NOT indie game! Even if CDProject was publisher you couldn't call this game indie. Never.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Indie means independent and that's what CD Projekt RED is. The fact that the games are published by the devs themselves makes the games indie despite them being considered AAA-titles.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Even if that's a correct definition, it feels wrong to me calling them indie, since CD Projekt was a major publisher here years before Witcher was announced.

As a man from Poland (the country of CD Projekt), I don't know if I should laugh at your comment or just think 'what... the...'). But right now it's the second option.
Hey, maybe recommend also FIFA 12. EA is developer. EA is publisher. It's an indie game.

CD-P also distributes games in Poland. Now they do it to a lesser degree than some years ago, but still, here's the list. Do you still think they're indie studio? Do you still think The Witcher is an indie game?

Even if you do, it was published by Atari, not the devs thesmelves. You fail in every way possible.

When CD Projekt RED is listed as both developer and publisher on Steam, GOG & Gamersgate, surely it must be wrong information. Atari and the others have probably been publishers for the retail versions.

It doesn't matter who is considered the publisher. You just can't call such big game "indie". Be smarter please.

"Be smarter please." Well, from his definition FIFA series is indie, so don't expect too much. :)

That definition is what the word indie really means. It has just been transformed to mean small games. By that definition some games aren't indie but are considered to be. Games like Bastion, Shank & Psychonauts. So as you can probably see, the word 'indie' can mean different things.

It doesn't really matter, if a game is indie or not and people can use the term differently. Heck, I could even call my trash can indie, if I wanted to. But hey, let's continue arguing over internet 'cause that's smart.

There is no exact definition of the world "indie game". So just think it over: can you really call Witcher an indie game? I think no. I know that Atari didn't pay for developing but still I can't call Witcher indie just because they payed themselves. Of course it couls be rights but you shouldn't think only with rules.

On a slightly related/unrelated note, the term "indie bands" or "indie music" gets thrown around a lot here in the UK. I would say that it used to mean a band that is on a independent label or have no label - but now it's almost considered a particular sound(or genre) in itself. Not sure if I make sense here, too tired to delete or re-consider

I agree.

Both in the music and gaming industry the term "indie" has been overused (for marketing purposes) to such an extent that it has now lost its true meaning, imo.

Psychonauts is sufficiently indie to be in the Humble Bundle.

Shank too was in an HIB, but, if i'm right, was published by EA.

indeed, so what is indie then?
self puplished games with a not-so-big studio (1-15 people?) and not-so-big budget? or bad 8-bit-hipster games?
