Hey there!

I created a little programm called "Steam Library Sorter". It allows you to sort your Steam library into categories easier than Steam itself does. And now I wanted to share the program with YOU!

The SLS is available in German, English and French (Spanish and Portuguese are comming with the next release). If you want to translate it into your language, feel free to contact me. This would be very very awesome!

As mentioned, I´m creating a little homepage for additional information about the SLS as well as a Steam Community Group (links at the end of this post). So please, if you want to use the SLS, give me feedback about it. It´s my first public release of a self-developed program.

I really appreciate any kind of feedback from you!

--Update--

Thank you all for your feedback so far, you are awesome!
It´s great to see that some of you are using SLS and that it can help you. I will definitely not stop working on this, quite to the contrary, I´m happy that you provide me with bug reports and some feature requests, too.
To let you know what I´m doing and what I have done so far, I created a changelog on my homepage: SLS Changelog. Here you can see what will be added, changed and fixed in the next release and what was done in the previous ones.
I don´t really know when I will release the next version of SLS, but I hope this will be in the next week because I´m on vacation for two weeks in a few days (Italy <3)

I wanted to add something about performance of SLS: In fact, handling a large library (something over 500 Games) takes a bit of time. Please be patient :) I tried to make all background processes visible to let you know that the SLS is working and did not hang up. For example, at the first start, it downloads all game logos for each game and after that the game information (genre, developer etc) from the steam servers which takes some time. Each time the SLS is doing something, you´ll see it in the status bar of the main window or a red loading circle appears somewhere. I will try to make it more efficient in the future.

Unless you could trick titles into appearing under multiple categories (so something like Borderlands can be both RPG and FPS), I wouldn't be likely to start using it. Valve's categories method leave quite a bit to be desired.

This. I have already tweaked my library to be well-organized, but it can't get any better until a proper tagging system (with filtering) is available.

Right now, mine is a mess. Favourites for titles which I've recently focused on, Beaten, Broken and All Games covering the rest of the titles.

Not really suitable for over 500 games.

I have 949 games right now in my library, and trying to put them into any kind of categorization is impossible. just default A-Z is the best I've found.

Titles like Doom 3 BFG and Freedom Force that just won't run because of technical problems. FF doesn't work well on newer PCs, while BFG seems to be a glitchy mess for some people.

I have a category named "trash" for such games. Anyway, I have the usual "Unplayed games", where the majority of my games are currently staying. Then I have FPS, RTS, TBS, TPS, etc.

It looks like it doesn't work with non standard Steam installations (I have mine installed in D:\GamesSteam instead of C\:Program Files\blahblah)

As long as all the games are visible in the Steam library, it should work.

While you can't select more than 1 game at a time, you can have more than 1 game in a category.

How about this -

  • create desktop shortcuts for all the games
  • sort those shortcuts inside folders any way you wish
  • include all of that as a new library under windows or create a menu from that folder/shortcut structure
  • ...
  • profit!

I wonder how many hours that would take me with 1100 games... then absolute nightmare it would be sorting through those folders and icons to find the game I want.

I'll stick to steam categories.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, I meant that as a process for a third party program, not that one should do it manually.

I still think it would be a nightmare looking through 50-60 folders for the game I want.

"Die Datei, in der Steam die Kategorien speichert, wurde nicht gefunden. Möglicherweise wurde Steam nicht auf diesem Computer installiert. "

"The file in the Steam store the categories was not found. Maybe Steam is not installed on this computer."

What is wrong on my end?

Please check the "Steam/userdata" directory manually. If there is one folder in there, open it and go forward to "7/remote" and verify that there is a file called "sharedconfig.vdf". If the "userdata"-folder contains more than one directory (this happens when you login into Steam with multiple accounts), SLS takes only the first one and looks there for the file. I will add a functionality in the future for getting the right directory according to the SteamID you have to input.

WORST SHIT EVER!

it downloaded all logos, which took like 3-4 minutes. when it finished, all fukcing started to lag.
worst came when it started to save image cache. stopped at 58%, cpu went to 100%, all pc stopped. couldn't close that shit, needed to restart pc. don't use it!

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Just tested it with my PC and laptop, logo download took me less than a minute, saving logo cache didn´t stop. I agree that the performance is bad at the moment, but I never managed it to get my pc stop working. As it only uses one cpu core, you either have a single-core cpu or its another problem on your side.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

i have a dual core, but does having not best pc qualifies as problem for this? come on :D

1 decade ago
Permalink

Doesn't do that with my CPU either. Quad-core, and none of the cores are 100%. Around 500 logos downloaded in under a minute.

Tied a few of these before, none of them have been good.
Just started it, but so far it looks the best out of every other existing one I have seem.

It was extremely easy to setup and start using. I was not sure if (english, ca) was an acceptable input, but it seemed to work.

I like how you who all the information for every game: Genre, publisher.

Obviously there is a lot of work ahead to polish it, but this is by far the best start I have seen.

I would ask for some feature I really really want. Automated categorization.
I really do not want to categorise my own games. But if you could auto create categories based on genre and put the games in their corresponding genre, that would be amazing. I know most games have multiple categories, but there are multiple ways to make a best guess.
1 - Just go with the Steam categories and pick the first one (alternatively ask the user).

2 - Go with your own, or crowd-source a static programmed genre list.

3 - Go with some sites list, like metacritic. Scrape the metacritic site page for each game and use their genre.

I have wanted something like this. I do have an error to report, however. Feel free to add me on Steam for further testing.

Unhandled exception

Conversion from string "10 Okt. 2007 to type 'Date' is not valid.

I am also looking for something that can sort my wishlist based on current price rather than base price, which Steam seems to refuse to do. Could you supply this?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thank you, I think I have an idea what can cause this error, have to experiment a bit with foreign date strings.
The only thing what would be possible is to display your wishlist in SLS and let you select a criteria for sorting (wich would be easy to implement, will take a look into this), but it wouldn´t be permanent because wishlists are stored on Steam servers.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The list of games owned by the player would be stored on Steam servers, but you still downloaded that data. What prevents you from caching wishlist with current prices locally and working on that local copy, only updating if 24 hours have passed since the local copy was made, or if the user requests it by pressing an Update button?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

As I said, this would be possible and I´m working on this.
By the way, I just tested it with my wishlist: For me, Steam sorts it based on current price (I have two games on sale in my wishlist) Clicky

I inserted my Steam ID and checked that the program language is right, but I guess I have to put finnish for store language and fi for region? It doesn't load anything at the moment though.

Just tested it with your SteamID, "finnish" as store language and "fi" for region. The only error I got is when trying to convert a string to date, which I have to experimant a bit. Thought that the .NET Framework does this automatically based on the computer´s language.
