I saw Batman VR was on a good deal so I picked up a copy for myself and one to give away.

How many people own headsets now? They're reasonable priced imo, and there are some really good games out now (beat saber, rec room, lone echo are some of my favourites). It's honestly amazing how many average-looking games in their trailers end up being fantastic to play, since you really don't notice the graphic quality.

Just a note - if you've never played a VR game on your steam account, I will ask for a reroll, since I don't think there's any way of requiring people to own a headset to enter and it'd be a shame for it to end up just padding someone's game count.

I showed my whole family some Oculus Rift games during Thanksgiving and it was the most hillarious thing watching my Mom and Dad get lost in VR. My Dad was doing a dance like a little kid and my Mom almost hit my Dad in the face while playing Racket NX hahah. Then I showed my brother Pavlov VR (basically Counter-Strike in VR) and he was so blown away he said it was WAY better than playing Red Dead Redemption 2.

That said, there are a few other friends I've shown VR to who weren't as impressed, but those people are super lame hahah just kidding--it depends though if you're willing to dive into it and let yourself be immersed and not care how you look while playing it. Also there are down sides: It requires patience to setup (especially room-scale) and the hardware/software can be frustratingly buggy at times. BUT if you're willing to put up with those caveats VR is life changing—literally. Like, I never exercised before but now I get good workouts in VR to the point I'm drenched in sweat and feel like my heart is going to give out when playing games like Knockout League.

For those who say VR doesn't have any worthwhile games, I would highly highly disagree with you. Here are some to checkout:

  • Pavlov VR - Counter-Strike in VR might not be the most revolutionary idea, but this is one of the best VR experiences you can have. SUPER FUN.
  • Holodance - Think DDR is VR but way way more fun. I haven't played Beat Saber yet, but IMO this would be a tough one for Beat Saber to beat
  • Racket Nx - I hit the walls and I hurt my back playing this from swinging too hard. Really fun 360 racketball-esque game
  • Racket Fury - IMO best ping pong simulator, it's amazing how good the physics in this game are
  • Fallout 4 VR / Skyrim VR - You'll need a good rig to play, but if you have one, goodbye life. Unofficially supports mods too.
  • Sprint Vector - Really inventive racing game, swing your arms to glide the tracks/obstacle courses. Same dev as Knockout League
  • Knockout League - Great arcade-style boxing game, really good cardio workout
  • Tales of Glory - Think Mount and Blade in VR. There's a free demo on Steam
  • The Relentless - Uses the actual size of your room then creates laser fields, mines, moving targets. Endless mode is awesome.
  • Superhot VR - Surprisingly feels like doing yoga because you're always trying to hold these matrix like poses as you dodge bullets and think of your next move.

Hope that helps some of you who are on the fence about VR. If you have any questions, msg me and I'll be happy to provide more suggestions :)

I agree that showing friends & family VR & letting them try it out is great! My 80 year old grandmother was stunned to go to Hawaii & the top of a snowy mountain, even if only for a little bit. Having people to share your VR with definitely adds to the value.

Great suggestions too! I might check out a couple of them that I haven't heard about. But you should definitely try out Beat Saber, it's only $20, has great mod support & you can always refund it if you think it doesn't live up to Holodance :^ ). Everyone I've shown Beat Saber to has loved it, even if they were bad at it!

Thanks Ninja! I'm sure I will love Beat Saber (maybe even more than Holodance), I'm just a cheap bastard and waiting for it to go on sale, perhaps during Christmas.

What are your favorite games, aside from Beat Saber?

Besides Beat Saber, I've really been enjoying FPS games like Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, as well as Pavlov & Superhot too. I've heard Onward is good for more of Arma sort of feeling FPS game, so I want to try that one eventually. Dead Effect 2 is a decent zombie looter shooter, & I picked up Sairento VR from a Viveport sale for $1 so I'm going to try that soon. Rec Room has also been really fun, especially since it's free. It's mostly multiplayer focused but it lets non-VR players play with VR players, so having friends join is an option too. The Castlevania spoof game-mode they recently added, "Crescendo of the Blood Moon" has awesome whip mechanics that make me wish we could get a full Castelvania (Or I suppose Metroidvania) game for VR.

Other than that I haven't branched out much yet, so I might check out Holodance when it goes back on sale. My brother might love it since he played Osu a lot, so I appreciate finding out about it! I also used to love Mount & Blade, so I've added Tales of Glory to my wishlist as well.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing your suggestions :)

I didn't know they added a Castlevania-like game to Rec Room, sounds like I'll have to check it out. I love Rec Room too, it's just makes me feel so happy. Also, everyone on VR has been really friendly, it's a nice change of pace from the toxicity of other communities which has made me stay away from a lot of online games lately.

I'm sorry you feel that way.

I don't play VR games exclusively, I love pancake games too. What do you like to play?

I don't know, they give me kind of a "demo" feeling, they are there just to make use of the technology and once the initial enthusiasm (if any) ends they eventually lack much substance and bore fast, kinda like a chewingum.

I don't see the replayability of a Dark Souls, more like a party game you take off its shelf for a few occasions.

It's like when I had a Wii, all the motion games lasted a day or two but the game I eventually played the most was Monster Hunter 3.

I see. I see. Those are valid concerns.

I haven't played any Monster Hunter games yet so I can't speak to how it would compare to something like that, but you are correct that VR doesn't have a lot of AAA content with lots and lots of hours, except for say Skyrim VR and Fallout 4 VR. That said, I could play Pavlov, Holodance, Racket Nx, and Racket Fury all day; Pavlov is basically CS on crack and the other's are highly replayable even in single player modes.

Right now the closest thing VR has to Dark Souls-like is Chronos.

Anyway, appreciate the discussion. Cheers Insetto.

I get where you're coming from, I actually kind of feel similarly with the Switch. The whole portable aspect of it just kind of detracts from the experience for me, small controllers, battery life, etc.. After Breath of the Wild & Mario Odyssey I haven't really felt like using it much. Tons of people love the Switch, but I guess it's not quite my cup of tea to an extent. So I can definitely see how VR would have that similar feel for other people. I just happen to have gotten more time out of VR instead of the Switch.

Too expensive for me, though I did get to try a Rift once. Unfortunately for me, it have me really bad motion sickness so it prolly won't ever be something I'm into. I am pretty curious to see where vr gaming goes though :)

Sadly according to Oculus support, the 3D effect will not work with someone that has double vision and a crossed eye (technically a lazy eye too, they're not the same but whatever). Prism lenses in the glasses fix the double vision AND my crossed eye "most of the time", but if my eyes are tired or strained then my crossed eye will wander (It's due to a muscle placed in the wrong spot on the eye, not because I was hit with a shovel). Since Oculus tracks your eye movement both the double vision and crossed eye would render just about every game unplayable until technology has advanced enough to where it will continue to track my vision/eyes even when they move out of the would be/should be track.

TL:DR Want one, can't have one, /wrists

Not me, now or never.

I actually find the idea pretty dumb... I mean, you have to STAND UP to play games? That's against nature!
Plus my eyes are already pretty worn out the way they are XD

I played Euro Truck Simulator with Oculus Rift a few years ago (a kickstarter dev edition) and loved it. Would love to play all driving, flying and space sims in VR. I don't have the pc rig to properly support VR, but i'm planning to upgrade sometime next year.

Has anyone used this before: https://riftcat.com/vridge ?

It's interesting, for like 20 minutes. I have no desire to purchase or try it again after using it.
Tried it at a friends house. Headset gets sweaty and the lenses fog up a bit.
Need a decent size space set up just for this, for motion sensors and moving your arms around.

We'll need brain interfacing before VR really takes off - IE plug in and lay down, moving/jumping/talking in a game with your thoughts.

I'd really like to get a Vive, I was actually hoping it was going to go on sale for Black Friday / Cyber Monday but no such luck. I've tried a few games and really enjoyed them. I do realize the tech is still in its infancy, but I still want to get involved now as it gets better and better.

I own an Oculus Go, which doesn't fit into the poll. I like it, but I think that higher resolution is needed.

It fits in the "Other headset" category.

You just need something like VRidge and you can play SteamVR games with it.

I voted Vive, rather than Other, as I ordered a Vive Pro + wireless on Cyber Monday. Still waiting for it, as the wireless adapter is on pre-order.

Since I spend almost the entire day on my butt at a desk, and consequently suffer back pain, I'm hopeful this will get me off it and moving around - I've gone for Room-scale or Standing games (e.g. BoxVR, Beat Saber). Also I get to laugh at the rest of the family waving their arms about.

I grabbed a Rift DK2 a while back for like £100 after trying PSVR at work and being sold on the concept. Just waiting on having enough spare cash now to get a better gpu and upgrade to a retail unit/Vive.

Aside from the the resolution/screen door effect being not as good the only downside I've seen recently is that the Oculus motion controls don't work with. Given that I pretty much only play rFactor2, Assetto Corsa and Project CARS 2 in VR this isn't really a problem. I would like to jump on Superhot VR, Pavlov VR and Arizona Sunshine at some point though.

As an aside, does anyone use VORPX or something similar? A few older games I'm wanting to try but not sure if it's worth paying for to find out it isn't very good or whatever.

Regarding VORPX, it's very rough around the edges and most games need manual tweaking of various settings. However, several popular games now have a Direct VR option, which is basically a one-click automatic setting and you're good to go. I've personally tried Bioshock and Fallout: New Vegas this way and they work very well. Don't expect to use your motion controllers to control in-game hands however, it doesn't go that far. You can only use the controllers only as a gamepad.

Cheers.

It was mainly for the Codies series of racing games, DIRT, F1 20XX etc. Most if not all have videos/profiles out there showing them working pretty well.

I first tried VR at an arcade and liked it. Then, as an experiment, I bought one of those plastic holders where you put your phone and, while performance was terrible due to my mid-range phone, I still liked VR as a concept. This persuaded me to buy a Rift this summer. I don't regret the purchase and would recommend it.

With that said, I think people need to temper their expectations. Many expected VR to be this game-changing phenomenon. It is not. The first generation of any new technology rarely is. VR probably won't replace regular gaming any time soon, but, if you don't suffer from VR sickness, can be a very nice addition to it.

I've been gaming for 20 years and have grown jaded by the lack of ambition and new ideas by AAA publishers. VR fills that void for me, it's new and fresh, developers are still experimenting to see what works and what doesn't. And I like it, kinda reminds me of gaming in the 90s.

This is not really the first generation of VR though. I played VR games in the early 90's, and they were quite cool back then (but very limited). We've at least gone past many of the early limitations. Having cordless controllers is one thing that really helps, as anyone who played early 90's VR can attest to (you would very easily wrap yourself into the cord...)

I would love to have a VR headset, but right now they're too expensive for me to be able to justify getting one, and my phone is too small for one of those solutions that uses your smartphone for VR (I intentionally got a small smartphone, as I find it more comfortable to put in my pocket).

IMO, adventure/point & click games and VR are a match made in heaven. When are they going to start making those? I guess the current market and target audience do not make it too profitable for devs, but god I hope that changes in the near future.

By the way, if anyone wants a recommendation, I Expect You to Die, although short, was extremely fun.
