Do you typically consider yourself a camper or NOT a camper in FPS games and why? Why do campers get a bad rap? I think I typically like to find a great strategic spot and tend to camp for some period of time instead of just constantly moving. I know this can depend on the game, but in general i'm wondering...

How about you?

I do a mix, people who yell about campers make no sense to me...I also like sniping and well what am I suppose to do jump around while sniping?

I so would but alas it was only my silly bad spelling.

I think the main reason people 'yell about campers' is because they're not PTFO, leaving others to do it while they sit back and impress themselves with a positive KDR.

You can camp and still help the team...Hell I even see people yelling in straight up deathmatch games about campers, people just like to piss and moan.

Thats what it really is imo...

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I think that's why people complain.

It's also a pretty soft way to get kills. Like hitting people behind play in a game of football while everyone else's attention is elsewhere.

I see that but I am not gonna use a sniper rifle like a shotgun/smg, thats all. I don't see how it is soft to use your mind while fighting, would you charge in like a maniac in real life? Seems foolish and honestly those guys with the giant kill rate are helping the team even if people don't realize it, you know by opening the way and clearing out enemies that would have bombarded you.

Seems really really silly. The link that Azgrel posted sums it up pretty well I think in a way.

  • I'm not suggesting that you use a sniper rifle like a shotgun, I'm suggesting that you don't use it at all ;)
  • It's soft because it allows a player to sit on the edge of the playing area, putting themselves at less risk than those playing the objective. Other players can't shoot back because of the distance, or have to break off from their current objective to knife them or put some C4 on their back. It's akin to shooting fish in a barrel.
  • Of course it would be a sensible tactic in real life and you'd be mad not to stay as far away as possible and in cover for as long as possible, but this isn't real life.
  • As for helping the team by clearing out enemies, if the player is half decent, those same enemies could be cleared out 400 metres closer to the action with an assault rifle while providing other benefits to the team that you can't do sitting back on a hill somewhere.

For the record, I'm not against snipers per se, but I just don't see the point.

You don't see the point in snipers? The point is to break them off from the objective, you just basically said it yourself! and of course to clear out enimies from afar ;-). Real life or not its a good tactic in a game, just like it would be in real life.

Wait what, if he was half decent? Seriously? What if his strength is aiming accurately with a sniper rifle? You seem to be hating on it because its not your play style...

Personally dont like to camp, although sometimes i have to leave for few mins game so finda a spot and camp. But mostly i try to avoid camping ,but also i dont go on direct fire, i try to approach enemy from back :) This stuff isnt liked like camping by most gamers but i dont give a fuck, its a game so you play however you see fit.

If the game has some good sniping weapons, then I will camp by all means, but if not, I'm up in your face with a shotgun.

camping is the true mark of a coward. doesnt want to take risks, just wants to reap others work, and is one of the worst type of human beings. Id rather share my dinner with a nazi or a pedophile than a camper, assuming they arent camper nazis or pedos

who is "we"? the reasons the allied powers won is b/c the corrupt new officials in germany capitulated to terrible surrender terms despite that the war had just taken a decisive step in their own favor. ffs, learn your history

When I was younger I loved to camp. Technically that doesn't count, since I played a third person shooter (and third person shooters make it even easier to camp, oh hey, I can look around this wall). Anymore, I just get too bored to sit around and wait, I just keep moving

Depends on the current state. If the team needs a sniper, then i will spot, mark and take out targets.

In quicker-paced games like Call of Duty or Team Fortress 2, I really prefer to run around and shoot dudes; sitting in one place is boring. In Battlefield, though, I like to establish a good position with good cover and lanes of fire, and defend it at all costs.

I can't stand sitting in a corner waiting for someone to pass by. That's boring as hell. However if I'm playing with a gun that has a scope then more likely I'm sitting down out of sight until someone crosses my scope.

it all depends on what weapon i am using, if im snipper, then i camp for a small period of time, but i tend to move to different spots alot, if i aint a sniper, then i charge headon in

I move and camp... Camp a spot tight for a while until I get noticed and then move on. I just call it playing.

It really depends on the game since camping can make it completely unbalanced and simply cause many to stop playing.

SWTOR was an example of this in pvp zones where people could not spawn without instant death (no wonder so many people quit)

Not a camper here because im a fan of the quake and unreal series of fast paced action fps.

It depends. Most "realistic" games encourage "camping", when defending a position. Like good old RO:OST.

I miss that game

No. Even then I'm playing as a sniper, I tend to keep moving from one place to the other keeping medium to long range. Then I find a good spot, I look for enemies and if I can't see them I just run to the other place.

I base my strategy on the way the opposite team plays. If all of them are camping I will start camping/sniping them as well or I will simply hunt their ass down by not camping but by being as stealthy as possible (of course that fails often but then again it feels so good putting a knife in a sniper)

I'm a sniper, but I have never stayed more than 2 minutes in the same place, its boring, the way to snipe, is:
1) Prone in a high place.
2) Look for enemies
3)a) Enemies? Kill, and go to another point, but DO NOT stay too long.
b) No Enemies? Why wait? leave, and go to another point.
