While I understand that the site wants to keep my profile up to date of games I own, but there is a reason I have it set to private. I do sync it once in a while if I have new games, but I always make sure I do it while there are no free weekends running.

I was trying to post on the forum and when I pressed the post button, I got prompted with a forced Sync. So now the site thinks I have Killing Floor. I updated my profile not that long ago. However it doesn't see my Baldur's Gate EE as that's not listed in my profile (yay Steam for doing it wrong).

This must be the thing I dislike the most about Steam. The ability to list free games or temporary free games (even worse), but it can't list games I actually own which are not free.

/Rant!

Sorry, no giveaway here. Just needed to get this off my back. Wouldn't really join the killing floor giveaways anyway haha.

Anyone else had a forced sync today? The forced sync was showing anywhere on all pages, it was just redirecting me. Which was annoying, as it lost my post to the forum. Good thing it wasn't a massive post, but just a simple one. Requiring a sync to be able to list and join giveaways I can understand, but surely I should be able to access and post on the forums ;)

Steam API doesn't let external parties take info from non-public profiles. I personally think of it as a good thing when compared to Facebook's terribad privacy settings, in which you might be hidden publicly but anyone with the right APIs can get all your info anyway.

Maybe think a bit before raging? There is a good reason for this - I realise it's not ideal, but I completely understand why it is forced.

i.e. I get game A from a friend/trade/etc. but because I have not synced my account, SteamGifts will think I don't have the game, therefore I will be able to enter giveaways for game A (even though I have it).

People can easily abuse a lack of forced sync. Of course, you don't seem like that person and you also mentioned you sync it whenever you get a new game, but what's the bet the majority of users would have tried to abuse this.

It's more an annoyance with Steam than with SteamGifts. The only thing I think is annoying on SteamGifts' end is the timing and messing up my ability to visit the forums ;)

As I said at the start "While I understand that the site wants to keep my profile up to date of games I own" and the end "Requiring a sync to be able to list and join giveaways I can understand, but surely I should be able to access and post on the forums ;)"

This can however cause another type of abuse. It now thinks I own a game I dont, so now I am able to enter in DLC giveaways of a game I don't actually own. If these are keys, the giver won't be able to see whether I used it or not either and I can keep it or give it away elsewhere.

As always, there are good things and bad things to everything ;)

If that's the thing you dislike most about Steam, you should advertise the platform.

If they would pay me I would ;)
I see no reason to advertise everything I don't see massive problems with. There are plenty of little annoyances, but this one is my biggest. There is already a topic about what people dislike the most, so not really a reason to list them all here too ;) But if you want to know more of mine; No/barely any download management, categorisation synchronisation and their pricing differences between countries. This last one does help grow the community though as people find friends to help them get things cheaper in other locations. However, this is also causing fraud...

Forced sync happens if you haven't synced for 7 days. It's specific to all users, and is not a site-wide event.

Yeah thought so, I just never had it before. Blame the free event things overlapping. Otherwise I would have synced in between :)

Maybe there could be a way to stop steamgifts from syncing on weekends, as it would be only 3 days and it will stop the problem with free weekends. At least I think so, I really don't know if it would work that way.

Postponing sync causes more problems for us; it will increase the number of multiple win cases site-wide.

My advice is to sync before the weekend and to keep track of your syncs.

And it's not always just the weekend. Like now with Killing floor, it keeps going on after the weekend. So apart from the above, the issue will remain anyway and there isn't much SG can do about it.

I meant when you don't play the game at all.

I sync everytime I buy a game, but I do understand your problem. There are lots of other issues and I think this is too trivial for both steam and steamgifts to look into that I don't see a compromise will be made like ever.

Well for Steam it should be quite easy. There is even a topic on the Steam forums that actively lists and updates which games/bundles are causing issues not showing up in your profile.

Ideally, Steam would list all games and DLC on user profiles. I might be missing something, but I don't understand the purpose of listing free weekend games. They should be removed, or given a special flag marking them as free weekend. Otherwise, it's just misleading for everyone. Another great feature would be allowing users to grant profile access to certain domains. This way someone could allow access from SteamGifts.com, while at the same time maintaining a private profile.

Either way, there's not much we can do on our end, outside of tweaking sync times, and attempting to track and ignore free weekend games.
