No calling out, be sure to double-check who you are trading with, be aware when trading items that aren't gifts, et cetera, et cetera

Even gifts aren't necessarily safe though. You should either trade with someone who already has mountains of positive rep, or buy it straight from the Store yourself.

you won't get him banned. according to steam rules you should trade only steam items for steam items. you didn't so you just gifted him a free game. It's your fault for not following the rules.

You can report him as impersonator to steamtep, but that's pretty much all, and it's no official steam site ;)

Remember - check your traders, be aware with impersonator, never go first with gifts, and even better only trade steam gifts for steam gifts, or gifts for keys.

Firstly, no calling out.

Secondly, it is unfortunate but I'm fairly sure Steam won't ban him. Trading is at your own risk if I'm not mistaken.

I can't say I'm the biggest trader but I know you should use steamRep and some other things to make sure the person you're trading with is not a scammer. I know steamtrades also has a positive/negative system in place.

You have been offered plenty of advice for future transactions. But, there is little hope in getting your gift back or having said offender banned.

steam chat warned you about him being scammer. you didn't check if he is the one from steamtrades link. you went first with steam gift.
IT'S YOUR OWN FAULT! nobody here can help you

Many people below me actually did try to help, the fact that we can't get him steam banned, which you want, doesn't mean we aren't helping. We just can't do miracles.

Well, maybe next time you will read that warning (about it being a gift, and that the other can promise things outside of the trade and blabla) better, and act more towards it.

Also, this is the classical impersonating. As you can see (I see you did leave him a negrep on the proper steamtrades page) he must have had either 5 or 6 negrep already, with just 8 posrep at the time of trade. If someone gives you a steamtrades profile, always follow the link back to the actual steam profile (it is there for a reason). If that person is not a friend, you are dealing with an impersonator.

And honestly, you probably learned yourself the most now, which is, there are scammers out there.

He has 3 pending reports on steamrep... how could you seriously consider trading with the guy?

  • who the hell goes first with a gift copy?

Learn HOW to trade first, before you actually do it to prevent yourself from these situations.

I hope it's a learning experience for you, good luck getting the guy banned because it won't happen. Trading is at your own risk.

You voluntarily traded that game with him, that's your fault for trusting him
My brother used to be scammed like that for dota2 items worth about 80$ at that time, and valve has no responsibility for that, because the trade was made by you

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Your fault, he didn't do anything wrong except lie to you...which is not VALVE responsibility. Only if you get hacked would Valve step in

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That isn't true, eventhough it's not Valve's responsibility, he can still be reported and issued a trade ban, i've had my fair share of experience trying to help a friend that got scammed almost the same way, and we didnt had to use Steamrep too

So you advice someone who was not hacked, to prove to Valve that they were hacked, to gain this game back.

Apart from that being bad advise in general, it would be even worse if that would affect you in case you would actually get hacked (Valve being less helpfull in a 2nd time being hacked, in their eyes).

He is an impersonator. There is already a thread about him on Steamtrades.

got scammed my first time on steamtrades to by an impersonator ... sounds the most common scam for newbies on trades ...
say bye to your game an money .. carry on .. next trades always check and double check ... always open his steam profile from steamtrades profile and double check if his really the guy you are talking ...

now forget about it and carry on nothing to do more you lost your game and money forever forget about it..

By the way, I just noticed you said Report him all! on his ST profile.

That would be awkward wouldn't it? First of all, we have no 'proof', only screenshots. Apart from the fact that screenshots can get edited, nowhere on those screenshots, is there a way to trace back who the guy actually is.

As much as people here would like to help you get an insight on how this could have happened (and how to avoid it next time), getting more people to report him, would be unfair (it would be exactly the same as him having other people report you).

Because the feedback system is there with numbers, to show your own experiences. If I would go around, and give everyone an extra negrep, who accumulated some negreps in the past, you kill the whole system.

But again, good luck with it. Go outrside, smoke a cigarette (if you smoke), feel stupd maybe for a minyte. And then just accept it.

at least you print screened the trade, along with the chat
but not checking the profile carefully was your only downfall

report him on steamrep, although it seems he already has been reported on. not with 1 report BUT 3 reports XD

You can contact valve but I'm not too sure whether or not you would get your game back, the least they would do is revoke the game from him.

Actually no, that's not the least they would do by far.
The least they would do is nothing, besides answering your ticket with an automated message.

And honestly? I don't blame them. They can't fix all the problems mainly caused by stupdity
