Opensource games?
It's been in "alpha" for like a decade or more. I think it can be considered just as an open source game with still a bunch of bugs.
I don't know if they'll ever release a version labelled stable, but to me it seems pretty much at the same level as The Battle for Wesnoth (which happens to be on Steam there https://store.steampowered.com/app/599390/Battle_for_Wesnoth/ ). Only the latter has been calling itself "stable" for a decade.

That was a long time ago so I'm not quite sure... I think I played Wesnoth like in 2009 and 0AD maybe in 2011-2012, and again later maybe in 2015-ish.
I haven't played it since then, so I don't know if it changed much lately. But from the look of it and how slowly it used to evolve, I suppose it hasn't changed that much. One notable thing I remember is the AI being either too easy or way to hard, with no proper intermediate setting. Hopefully they fixed that now ^^

In my first match, AI attacked me a bit earlier than I expected but left when I started selling most of my structures leaving the base building with the ability to hire one worker which was an odd behavior but kinda nice as well especially that most AIs in games aim to wipe your entire base as fast as possible

is a free and open-source, real-time strategy game under development by Wildfire Games.

It plays good for an alpha game and has a multiplayer feature but no campaign yet, only single-player matches
I would like to see such a thing yield a really good game by combined efforts
