I guess this could count as both. But I wonder how "legit" it is...

Totally legit. You didn't hear about the meteor that hit earth last night? :P
I assume you mean how genuine their responses were. And definitely a PR stunt.

If it isn't a set-up I really have to wonder how many people they had to go through to get those reactions. I mean, come on, a big meteor heading anywhere near a collision course with a populated area would have it evacuated days, if not weeks, before the actual impact. Or am I giving all the specialists in the world who keep track of the sky for a living too much credit? :D

maybe... I'm wondering how many people walked into the room and said "Hey kickass TV!!"

No you are just vastly underestimating the difficulty of keeping track of celestial objects that small and overestimating how much effort/money people put into it.

For objects smaller than a kilometer and bigger than a hundred meters there have been cases of them being detected only after they passed by the closest point to Earth in their trajectory. When you get into smaller than a hundred meters it is even worse with the best proposed systems(which are far better than the ones in practice) estimating about 50% of meteors detected.

Just recall Chelyabinsk meteor that hit Russia last year it measured about 17-20 meters and if the angle wasn't so shallow that it detonated far above the ground it would have destroyed quite a bit around the area(hitting a major city, as small the odds are considering the size of the planet, would mean easily a death toll of millions). If you told people to check exactly where it was coming from we would still have been unable to detect it due to it's trajectory meaning the Sun was preventing it from being seen.

Basically in general the only meteors we would have advanced warning of are the big ones which an advanced warning is least useful for thus we are relying on luck. I figure at some point a meteor will hit somewhere that will cause a decent damage and/or death toll and then we will finally take the threat seriously, hopefully it won't be one too big though.

Sorry to ruin it but they are indeed actors. It's a clever, entertaining ad though.
