So I realize most of my previous puzzle prize offerings haven't been that great. But I happen to have a key for ABZU that I've no intention of using myself, and I can see from the community wishlist that it ranks in around #50, so surely there must be some interest to get that game, right? Or do you think knowing what the prize is beforehand spoils it? Like, just the mystery of finding out what the game is draws in more attempts to solve it?

It's been a while since I've done a puzzle and I'm getting closer to leveling up, so if this drums up enough interest, it could be the one that puts me over the top. Here's the aforementioned puzzle:

PUZZLE NOTES

Random characters on a grid, have to find coordinates for the characters that make up the giveaway code.

Grid shown without the two headers around the edges. These are used to map out the code.
 * Each one is composed of words seven letters in length, without repeating any character (important)
 * Words like apricot across the board might confuse up and down everyone trying to solve

Grid would have arrows adjacent to the characters, denoting their case.
They would all use the same connection, so an invalid arrow for one character means all connections of that type are incorrect.

Giveaway will be open for 3 weeks, so any hints can be given and people have time to get over being stuck.
No restrictions will be placed on the giveaway - solve it to enter it.

This is where hints will be posted, as they are posted. Reveal at your own discretion.

  • Both headers used are given to you in this post, no guessing required
  • The headers are also next to phrasing that describes which edge they go to
  • Since the headers don't repeat any characters, you can probably derive a sequence from them
  • The first in sequence from the top header plus the first in sequence for the side header line up to the first character. Repeat for the remainder
  • Characters are directly next to their respective arrows (north/south/east/west). And since characters all connect to them in the same direction, you should be able to know which direction to use from the first valid character
  • The right arrow is right next to the right characters, right?
  • The "4" is a red herring, there are no numbers in the final code

Also, if anyone is wondering - I've cleaned up this post a bit. The puzzle is the same, just not handwritten now. I didn't want you struggling through my scribbling and the clues.

It's always nicer if you tell which game is the prize for solving the puzzle because some people might invest time just to find out they already own the game or they are not interested in it :) As to prize of the puzzle - it all depends on the puzzle. If the puzzle has nice concept many people will solve it just for fun, so you can give away even Tier 1 game. It will have less entries most probably but it is a prize for investing time in solving the puzzle after all, isn't it? :) Unless the puzzle is superhard, then the better prize is the more people will participate :)

So what would you say about my proposed puzzle? Is it interesting enough to attempt? Or too hard with not a good enough of a prize?

Comment has been collapsed.

I think it is a prize that is somewhere in the middle. It is very very good game but on the other hand it was in some Humble Monthly IIRC so many people already own it probabl. But it's just my opinion :) Regarding your puzzle - I don't really understand how it'd work so can't tell much about it :(

So in case you haven't seen it, the puzzle has changed slightly - a few things were pointed out and I realized other issues that could occur down the line. So it's a bit clearer as a result. I don't know if you'll understand it now necessarily, but I thought you might be interested in at least taking another look at it.

I don't know if you've seen the hints yet, but they've proved helpful to a few people.
Might be worth taking another look at if you are still interested in the prize. :3

As stated above, I personally like when the prize is stated beforehand, since it saves people time if they already own the game or if it's something they wouldn't be interested in playing. On the same spectrum, it'd encourage those that have it wishlisted to try harder at solving the puzzle.

That being said, I've read through the puzzle instructions three times and I still do not understand how you'd go about solving it. I did only get 2 hours of sleep though, so I could just not be comprehending it at the moment. Seems interesting but confusing at the same time ~

I've rewritten the instructions a bit, so hopefully a bit more clear.
I mean relatively, it's not that much clearer, it is a puzzle after all :3

I prefer when its made clear what the game is (so that people know in advance if they own it or have any interest in it) but also what level restrictions or other restrictions might be in place. I know you can go to a profile to see the giveaway level, but sometimes there are multiple private giveaways going at once at different levels and its unclear what the level requirement is. Other restrictions would include any SGTools rules check beyond the basic rules. I remember being quite disappointed after spending a lot of time solving an ItsTooHard puzzle only for it to link to a complicated SGTools check I couldn't pass, that the original post made no mention of.

As for your puzzle, I don't really understand it. I think I'm supposed to be finding a 7 letter word with no repeating letters, but I don't know if I'm supposed to be looking at your post text, the written text, or the grid to find that word. Then once I have that word I don't really know what to do with it, aside from trying to follow a pattern on the grid that spell that word, but I don't know how that would return a 5 character code. Your example of a bad word "apricot" is quite confusing to me as I don't understand what is wrong with it: it has no repeating letters and doesn't spell any other words in part or when read backwards, so I think I'm missing some important detail, or this is all just way too complicated for me.

I get that. I don't restrict my puzzles for that reason - if you work hard enough to solve it, you should be able to enter it.

Okay, so your analysis exposes some problems and tells me that some future points could prove problematic as well.
I've gone ahead and altered the grid and rewritten the notes a bit to hopefully clear some things up.

Abzu is a nice game ^^
Knowing the prize beforehand is a sure motivation ^^

It's good to know it beforehand. Also, while Abzu isn't a bad game, it's not something really interesting. It's about underwater exploration and repeating the same thing over and over again. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it lacks a storyline. It's also somewhat small.

Are there hints? Yes, there are! Hints have recently been added to help nudge you along to the correct solution.
Will there be more? Of course! The next one will be added early tomorrow, and then depending on the solve rate, more will be added later.
Will it help me with the part I am stuck on? I don't know! I'm making assumptions based on feedback from those that solved it.
Is ABZU still a good prize? Maybe! Humble decided to bundle it just after I started this, foiling my special giveaway. Odds are good at getting a free copy here though!

Grid would have arrows adjacent to the characters, denoting their case.
They would all use the same connection, so an invalid arrow for one character means all connections of that type are incorrect.

I just don't understand what this paragraph means

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

All of the valid characters share the same way of connecting themselves with their respective arrows. Be it "one tile below", "three tiles to the right", etc., they all should match. So if one character cannot use "right-top diagonal", than all the other "right-top diagonal" arrows you found for the other characters are wrong too.

Hopefully that makes more sense?

There's a hint about arrows now, too!

i have both the headers in the right place, re read the post many times, but don't know to start "mapping" out the code. also the uppercase lowercase instructions can't understand.

Lucky for you, mapping was the next hint! It should be easy now if you know your alphabet.
The upper/lower case instruction may make more sense once you found the characters, but there's another hint about those coming later too.

Instructions too much confusing
What do you mean by headers?
What is mapping?
And 7 letters used where? 5 are for GA link, 8 are for ITH.

Words like apricot across the board might confuse up and down everyone trying to solve.

This makes it more confusing. There isn't even letter "o" in you puzzle set.

I give up. I would like to know how its solved after the GA ends.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Headers are the words around the edges of the grid, like headers on a table. There is one for down the side and one for over the top.
Take another look at hint #4 for more details on how to map.

* Each one is composed of words seven letters in length, without repeating any character (important)
* Words like apricot across the board might confuse up and down everyone trying to solve

These lines are about the headers, so that you know the proper criteria when searching and can be sure you have the right ones.
And remember, the headers are in the post, not the grid. Too cyclical to need the headers to get the headers otherwise.

Personally I prefer to know the prize beforehand - if I want to solve the puzzle I will do it anyway, but it may be a let down when you spend a lot of time on a puzzle only to see a GA for a game you are not interested in.

Many thanks for the puzzle, it was a bit to hard initially (i.e. I gave up), but now it is pretty easy with all the hints :-)
