Before you go all "omg ur such a nub minecreft is teh best gaim evur!!!11!" on me hear my points.
Sure, it can be fun for a while, but all the attention its gotten is really too much. Its a very simplistic game, and the only way I found fun on it was modding it, which got boring after a while too. Once you get your diamond tools and stuff its basically over, nothing else to do but build and you have the creative mode for that.
Also you have about 100 thousand minecraft youtubers, which try to copy the success of others which is very annoying, making youtube like 50% minecraft videos. If I wanted to watch people build I'd sit down and watch a construction site.
And time for the 'best' part. The multiplayer. All there is to say about it is that its a bunch of kids aged 5 - 12 with yogscast skins that 'troll' by destroying pixelated bricks and then the occasional 30 year old creeper that plays it too.

TL;DR - I don't enjoy minecraft and I think its overrated.

Ultima Online did everything that Minecraft did but it's not 3D blocky pixel graphics. And that was in the 90s.

The result is something really new, that's why it's the most important game in...let's say about a decade. It's not perfect at all and it's surely not my favourite game of all time, but it's not overrated either.

It is over-rated. Just because it triggered a load of clones(trend), it doesn't make it not over-rated.

...and so did Terraria. And PayDay. Borderlands. Super Meat Boy. Don't Starve.

THEY all copied many of their aspects from other games, yet, from the looks of your profile, you seem quite fond of them. Every video game copies one another. That's what art does! Art imitates art.

but it isnt a direct copy

Game minecraft copied

Minecraft

its just such a close similarity, 2 games based off of mining square shaped blocks with very close concepts and just some kind of different textures? sounds like copying to me

Minecraft took the idea and expanded it, after all Infiniminer doesn't seem a so good game, and it has never been finished

Fun fact - pretty much every game you have ever enjoyed copied at least a few of its mechanics from one or more existing games.

Except Minecraft directly rips the code off Infiniminer. Notch didn't even have the decency to wait a bit after the code got leaked, he released it instantly, which means that he wanted to make plagiarise Infiniminer even BEFORE it died. And no one remembers that! Nobody remembers Zach, everyone just praises Notch for being so "ingenious" and other bullshit. Talk about undeserved money.

Being original was never coming up with something completely new but instead putting things together in a way people never imagined before. With that said, this is why inventors and game creators can be labeled original even though they were not the first to create the ingredients to their final product.

Not at all, you can play for dozen of hours without even see everything the game has to offer. Also, many other games of the same genre came out and people still play them.

Minecraft's true gift is not in its mining and crafting aspects, but rather:
"Can I do this?"

Minecraft is about attempting the impossible, no matter how improbable, building the most interesting and creative things you can. Of course, this does not excuse it flaws, but it makes for some insight on why it is such a phenomenon.

I, however, hate it. My little sister loves it, though, so I let her play through my account.

Not true at all. There are just people who enjoy spending hours on doing stuff there, but it doesn't mean that all (or the majority) of the creative guys will enjoy it.

It's the video game equivalent of building with lego bricks IRL. The point of the game is not 'progressing' up to diamond tools, it's about expressing your creativity.

In terms of youtube and random multiplayer servers though, you're probably right.

I like games with guidance and narrative. Minecraft is almost too open ended and I feel the same way about Terraria. I want games to tell me a story or at least have some sort of purpose.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I had a hard time to get into Terraria at first because of that. I still play only it for a small amount of time every time I fire it up because I feel no sense of progress. I know new stuff will come my way as I progress through the game but that sense of progression isn't really palpable, at least at the moment. I still play it from time to time but I will devote more of my playtime to a game that has a good storyline.

I agree, I originally bought it in Alpha, when it was remotely enjoyable, and perhaps that was due to playing it with friends, but now.. I just get so bored with it, plus, there is so much stuff they could add to make it fun but they just don't.

Most overrated game ever, and only loved by Children.

  • It gets boring if you only play creative mode

  • After 100 hours of survival, it also gets boring unless you have friends to play with and a server to play on

  • Single-player is AGONIZINGLY BORING!

  • Bukkit server with plugins make it more interesting like McMMO and others

Honestly I found minecraft to be extremely boring with mods.. and even modern minecraft (being someone who started playing at the beginning of alpha) (go ahead call me a hipster). I enjoyed it a lot more then than I do now.. I actually see it as over-complicated and boring now.. Plus years of running a server kills it for you.

Minecraft is the kind of game that is completely based on the mindset of the user. Personally, I never play online, nor do I play the adventure mode, but have spent hundreds of hours building cool things in creative mode. On the contrary, I know some people that only play adventure mode and are not interested in being creative at all. I would say it is a blank canvas of a game where you get out of it what you take in. There is fun to be had, but only within certain spheres.

That being said, I fail to see why there are so many youtube channels where people are doing nothing interesting, the online community is mostly garbage, and I find it unbearable without graphic mods.
