So this is something that's always been in the back of my mind, but I guess I'd like to hear what others think about it also.

As we all know, the blacklist is a very helpful feature which is often completely misused by a lot of people. We often see people threatening others to blacklist if they say something they disagree with or when someone is accused of something. Even outside the forums, it's very hit and miss to give people freedom to such power as there are users who blacklist others for not commenting on their giveaways just for entering, some for commenting too much and (most understandably) not thanking for winning.

What kind of effect has this had on users in the forum? Personally I don't treat here the same as I would on a normal forum when it comes to anything political or something that's just highly opinionated, because it's frustrating to see someone I had a long discussion with (not even aggressively) ended up blacklisting me purely because of a difference in opinion, and it has since made me much less active in the forums. With that on top of the inability to sometimes understand sarcasm or a joke, people also often blacklist someone after they have misconstrued their post. It's funny because most of the time they're people that give away very little in the first place, but it's still a matter of principle.

I feel like the feature needs to be more hidden, not as simple as visiting someone's profile, but for an encounter to actually have happened between two users in the form of a giveaway to prevent abuse, but that's just me.

I hope you've been revising your hidden GA strategies, because this one goes a bit deeper.

Anyway, please engage in some relaxing music to sooth yourself from the inevitable upcoming difference of opinion and save yourself from being blacklisted. I strongly recommend it.

Dream Theater

EDIT: Small update, just posting the solution to the GA (It was Far Cry 4, lv3 requirement) as it seems to have frustrated quite a few people, ending with 53 entries. So I guess this could also be considered a heads up to any future posts that try to use this method.

As suggested, the GA was hidden deep in the post. At the bottom of the OP, I was highly recommending some music to everyone. The title of the song linked was "The Answer Lies Within". This was not a coincidence. If you note the URL of the link, it's not a normal youtube link. Scroll down and you'll see it's actually linking directly to a comment. Being from me. This included the code needed for the giveaway URL.

Are your forum posts affected by the presence of the blacklist?

I check how generous a user is before berate them

I care little for being blacklisted and always give my true opinions
This had never occurred to me and you have tainted my forum experience, you swine

I dont understand why people are making so much drama bout blacklist.

I just want you to know that no one is entitled to anything. We (You, I and everyone else) are giving people privilege to enter to our giveaways.
If we choose to remove your privilege for any reason or no reason at all, then we have the rights to do so.
If you choose to blacklist me for saying "starwars sucks" then you should be able to, and I am not entitled for any answers unless you allow an answer.

So I honestly don't understand the problem here.

disclaimer: starwars doesnt suck, that was just an example.

I believe anyone has the right to exclude whoever they like from their giveaways. I only blacklist people that either break the rules by regifting/selling items or people that are incredibly rude to those people generous enough to be running a giveaway. I have already given away over $1,000 in a month. I couldn't care less if I can't enter some mad kid's giveaway for a copy of Crappy Early Access $1 Game.

At the end of the day, it's the giveaway creator's money to spend and they can spend it as they see fit.

The options in the poll seem limited. That being said, I think my BL maxed out at six people or so. They were in there for somewhere between three and six months... then I purged them. I am not certain that I will ever add anyone again, but you never know.

I find that most people threatening blacklisting are laughable losers who occasionally give out a few $1 games. And really, I don't care about blacklist threateners anyway. There are plenty of contests to enter and I've won plenty of games, I ain't even worried about it. And o.p., stop whining about people who "misuse" a feature; people can blacklist for whatever they want. Sorry you're mad.

Personally, I blacklist people who annoy me on here, but I don't really give away enough that it'd really affect anyone anyway.

Doesnt really bother me if I get blacklisted for an opinion. You cant please everyone. Besides, its their gift/money and they can choose who they dont want as a potential winner. Im cool with that, even if it means they exclude me.

Personally though, I only blacklist regifters, people who dont activate their wins, and people who are overly rude on forums. If you cant express your opinion without getting nasty, on the list you go.

I think I only have one, maybe two, people on my blacklist. I've never worried about it. Treat others the way you want to be treated and follow the rules. Beyond that it's out of your hands.

I approve of giving people the option to exclude/include whoever they want. It's their giveaway. The choice should be theirs.

I am not affected by it that much. I don't enter giveaways, but still, the feeling of being blacklisted isn't enjoyable. That being said I definitely feel like I have a lot of freedom to say what's on my mind. I made a thread a few months ago calling for the removal of CV and I did notice at least one person who made some personal attacks on me in that thread ended up blacklisting me just for advocating that his precious CV be taken away. I technically don't even need to follow the site forum rules if I so choose to, obviously I'm here to participate on the forums but a suspension / ban isn't going to be the end of my day.

That being said I'm not going to exercise that freedom just because I can, but I will speak my mind on subjects where I feel it's important to do so, even if what I have to say is against popular opinion.

p.s. I'd feel at total ease posting if everyone supplied a reason for what they blacklisted me, that's what kills me the most, like I still don't know why I'm on Mew2's massive 2k person blacklist (maintained outside of the site) and it kills me to know why

If someone wanted to blacklist me, I would be fine with it. Even if it was for a trivial reason such as commenting "thanks", they can chose to do as they please. Unlike prohibiting sales to paying customers, there is no reason I should be allowed to enter. That being said, I value my reputation, an I would ask the blacklister why he choose to blacklist me. A simple explanation is all I would ask for. If I did something legitimately wrong, I would learn from my mistakes. However, if it was a stupid reason, I would just ignore it (or laugh about it).

Personally, I don't think I will ever have a blacklist. I believe that public giveaways should stay public for everyone. If I want to set parameters on who should enter, I should use the forums (or whitelists, groups, ect.). I can always ask for a new winner if someone broke my rules.

I don't think the way blacklist is implemented on the site should be changed but I don't personally find persuasive the practice of blacklisting people for things unrelated to the way they interact during giveaways (or trading).

It's like if your aunt buys you birthday and holiday gifts and such.

Let's say you have been caught giving them away or returning them for cash even if you specifically asked for that thing when asked by her or another party, or she expressly asked you to tell her if the gift was inappropriate so she could return it for something else. Or you were unappreciative of a gift and told her it sucked. Or in some unrelated discussion you decide to tell her that her gifts aren't all that and she's no Nelson Rockefeller or anything even though she hasn't brought up her gifts and doesn't act like anyone she gives a gift owes her favors. Or your aunt and other family/friends are reasonably certain that the last time you were at the house of a family friend you took some money she had in an envelope on her bureau that she needed to give to her hairdresser or something.

In those instances, if she decides not to give you a gift anymore, that's fine. Hard to argue about that except if you're entitled.

However, if she decides she doesn't want to buy you gifts because you intend to vote for Bernie Sanders, or listen to Taylor Swift, or you resist her intimations that you owe her favors because she's bought you gifts, then she's being an ass.

Still, she isn't obligated to give gifts to anyone and as it relates to gift-giving her desire to be arbitrary and perhaps unfair is totally within her rights.

Someone could blacklist me for this post. I think blacklisting me specifically because of the content of this post is pathetically capricious, but if that's what someone wants to do, I have no problem with it in principle.

Why is it understandable to BL someone who doesn't thank you if they win your GA?
You didn't give the game to them; you gave the game to the RNG and the RNG gave the game to the winner.
Thank the giver for giving you the chance but to thank someone who had no say in your winning or not (besides, potentially, narrowing the pool of entrants through the various means) doesn't make sense to me. Though, as OP pointed out, to comment or not is a very dangerous proposition. 'S'why, if you're going to thank someone (for whatever, regardless of facts :3), at least say something more'n "Thanks."

I started to BL some people for that, but it was just bundle crap and I didn't think it was a huge deal. I think a lot of people would expect it, and most polite people would give a thanks after winning, but it's all up to the person giving the game and how they view the situation.

I never really thought about the RNG factor how you put it, I still feel you are giving them the game, you do have to deliver it sort of :P Although it's a little impersonal if you just click 'show key' without saying anything yourself(actual steam gifts are a little more personal), but if you messaged them when you deliver the game and they just ignore you without saying thanks, that might seem kind of rude.

It's not like we're/I'm ungrateful (intentionally (")impolite(")), just the principle of the thing.
So many contrived reasons given for BL'ing, I personally only comment when I actually have something to say (not to say that "Thanks" isn't worth saying); I don't make it a point to thank those from who I won because I feel it's a given that I appreciate the game, as well as the thanks being handled by that which ((")actually(")) gives the games away out: RNG. The karma is real... as is WL'ing.
Also, pardon me if I'm ignorant (still new here), but aren't users obligated to give the games that they posted giveaways for? :3 Why thank them for doing what they (")have(") to do?
I understand that saying thanks is a nice thing to do and it shouldn't be something you have to consciously think to do; the threat of BL'ing if thanks aren't given only furthers the "Do this or else," notion Teliko brings up. So. I guess it's just defiance lmao - BL if you will, you should already know I'm grateful

yeah I hear where you are coming from, and that is possibly why I chose not to blacklist those few people. Although personally I always comment a thanks for the wins I receive, not to avoid blacklists, but it's just what I would do in RL if I received a gift.

+1 Saying thank you after you have won a game to the gifter is not only the proper thing to do it's also just common sense and basic manners. It's no rocket science. It only takes a little bit of time and it doesn't hurt. Unfortunately there are two proverbial extremes to be found amongst (my) giveaway winners and that are those that don't want to say thank you after a win and those that are too entitled to say thank you after a win.

yes, it's rng, but after you win it's up to the ga creator to gift the game to you.
so no matter how you see it, you should be thankful for both for the chance of entering the ga and winning it. (●´ω`●)

I'm generally a nice person so I rarely enter into heated argument, but if I feel like stating my opinion on a controversial topic I will do it without any regard to the possibly of being blacklisted. I will, however, try to be respectful toward others. (TRY being the key word here, I'm sure I hit a few sensitivities here and there.)

I don't really know whose blacklist I'm on, nor do I care. There is no shortage of giveaways on this site so I won't lose any sleep over having a couple of people lock me out of theirs.

Personally... I don't really care about blacklist. Somebody blacklisted me? So what? He got his reasons - whatever that was I accept it. But what harm this will do to me? I won't enter a giveaway? Please... If I would really care, I would deserve to be blacklisted.

I don't even use blacklist myself too often and if I do, I'm blacklisting only for a month. In my opinion everybody shoud have his chance to prove themselves.

But whitelisting is something different. It is very heart-warming feeling when you see yourself surprisingly on somebody's whitelist. Like you did a good job there and somebody would say: "you're a good man".

Haven't placklisted anyone for having a different opinion. Being a senseless dousche is another thing - everyone has a right to share his opinion / react to comments, but in a presentable way.
I blacklist rule breakers (vast, vast majority of my BL), the few people who apprently cound give but won't (thousands of games, newest AAA titles, constant trading while no giveaways in past years).
And while being blacklisted doesn't feel good, never ever should one feel offended about it. That's like not being invited to a birthday party of a person you probably don't even know. There are lots of other giveaways, unless one's blacklisted by dozens/hundreds of people, it doesn't really impacts as much as it looks like.
And blacklists for not commenting, etc? Well I was raised that if I visit someone, I ask where to put my stuff, should I keep on or take off my shoes, etc. As long as it's not totally absurd, it's simply polite that you try your best and follow the guideliens. As far as I know noone died because s/he read " please don't comment" or "no generic comment". Btw no generic comment is the easiest to follow, write ANYTHING. What a nice day, seen a good movie, forgot coffee and now grumpy. While I never BL for generic comments, I don't like the same copy-paste thanks on all my ongoing GAs, but I love to read a simple " Had an omelette with cheese, it was brilliant" post because thinking about someone else being happy makes me happy. Take your time to read descriptions and answer. You smiling actually makes you happier! Write something happy and smile while you write it, smile along with your smileys! :D While there are some drama, these simple tricks keep me up, happy and optimistic about the forum, and I don't let one user ruin my mood because s/he feels that I'm not worthy and blacklists me. (And while I'm not against the to-and-fro blacklisting, I don't back-BL anyone just becase. They have a choice to do so, and as long as they did no other harm to me, I don't feel I should hinder them in any way than other, normal users.

I don't just run around and blacklist people for whatever reason as long as that person's action does not directly affect me.

I personally think that giveaways with "Comment or blacklist" or similar requirements are nonsense. I do sometimes (politely) ask people not to comment in my giveaway because I don't want my Messages page clustered, but it is totally not obligatory. Polite people will read and respect my request, while the other ones are also polite to say thanks.

I generally avoid giveaways with requirement to comment anything. I dislike saying random stuff to random people. You are not my friend, why are you forcing me to talk? And why do I have to come up with something useless just to satisfy you? Instead, why don't you ask something that everyone can discuss, like "Do you like this genre?" or "Can you recommend some games like this?", etc.?

And I don't take revenge on anyone who blacklists me, unless that person causes me harm, as stated above.
