Hey guys, what do you think about this rig? =)

Intel I5-4690
Asus GeForce GTX 960 STRIX OC Edition 2GB
MSI H97M Eco
250GB Crucial BX100 SSD (+ another HDD at home)
8GB Corsair Vengeance
500 Watt CoolerMaster B500 ver.2
BitFenix Prodigy M
LG Electronics GH24NSC0 (DVD)

Also, we thought about maybe getting the 2048MB MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 100ME Aktiv PCIe 3.0 x16 to build a completely green pc. What do you think? =)

No, it's not already built.

a well, PC is fine, but that HHD...250gb is that enough for you? get at least 1TB imo, and you can save money by not buying a CD/DVD drive, because is completely useless, at least in my case.

Also you can get a cheaper i5 and get a better GPU like GTX 970 or an R9 of equal price.

Oh, I forgot to mention that with the hard drive. The 250GB is only the SSD, because I have a hdd at home already =). But the 970 is like 100€ more expensive, I don't think I could save that much by getting a cheaper CPU, or could I?

Ah it's Crucial, they make only SSD, I just didn't check, you will be fine even with a Intel Core i5-4460 or Intel Core i5-4440, and get a Corsair 550W PSU then, or if you don't want to save money it's not like needed xd, I mean you PC is great.

Buying that more expensive CPU he won't like get much more noticeable fps performance, and even that i5s I said are very good.

You can probably play Crysis 1 at 30 FPS with that rig.

He's joking. I bet you could play Crysis 1 smoothly! Crysis 3 however... might be 30 fps on a good graphics setting, it's a powerhungry game after all.

Nice rig!

Thank you guys. We checked for other PSUs, but it was weird. The page couldn't guarantee that they would all be compatible with Haswell, but it guaranteed that this PSU was compatible, therefore we took this one. =/

Looks good. The MSI 960 100ME comes with a mouse pad I think. You also must ask your self, if you plan on upgrading this rig or buying a new one when the time comes.

Well, I would choose to upgrade, but I don't hope I will have to in the negst few years =)

Permalink

In that case I wold suggest the 4690 or the 4590 depending on the price. It will last you a bit longer in terms of performance. Especially with win 10 and dx12.

You would want 16gb ram if you can afford it. While 8gb is enough for now, in 2 years it would start to limit your performance. I'm buying some additional ram myself today.

But if budget is an issue, don't worry about it right now.

Feels bit unbalanced though if you were aiming for pure performance. Cause then I would've made a few different choices. Then again don't know what your budget and requirements were :P

Comment has been collapsed.

Do you mean the balance between the CPU and the GPU?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I meant cpu, gpu and ram.
For example for any new rig i'd personally go for the 16gb ram.
Gpu-wise I'd go for a GTX 970 instead of the 960 for the extra punch it packs.
(making the assumption you'll OC the CPU anyway)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ah, okay

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Change it to a GTX 970, way better performance for a little more money.
Also, that hard disk is awfully small. In extreme cases 250 GB means the OS + 2 games.
The rest are solid.

Ah, I will edit the description. I have another HDD at home =)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

i would get a gpu with more vram (atleast 3GB) and maybe an additional hdd. 250GB isnt that much

GPU -> r9 280x, r9 290 (Powercooler PCS+) or gtx960 4G (MSI)

When I built my rig last month the difference between 8 and 16gb ram was 11$. And ddr2400 came in cheaper than 1333. Shop around on the ram. I ended up with G.Skill sniper series.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

i would also go with a slightly larger/better psu to cover future upgrades.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ah, you're right. It might be too small in case of an upgrade.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The ram is 2 x 4 GB, right?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think so, but now that you mention it - wouldn't 1 x 8GB be better in case of an upgrade?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

if an upgrade is expected in 2 years for 16Gb, then get 2x4Gb DDR3 RAM, because probably in 2 years you will be getting DDR4 RAM anyways. Also having 2x4Gb makes things load faster because of the dual memory channel when using 2 RAM sticks, some expensive motherboard even have quad memory channel, which does the same but with 4 sticks of RAM, but this last i think is not needed. So spending now to have 1 stick 8Gb of DDR3 RAM, with a possible upgrade in 2 years, is not like useful imo, because it will work slower, and in 2 years DDR4 RAM will be the most used probably.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You should buy 2 x 4 GB instead of 1 x 8GB, else your CPU is not able to use the Dual-channel architecture.
The MSI H97M Eco has 4 memory slots, so you may still upgrade to 4 x 4 GB later, what should be enough for the lifetime of this equipment.

GPU:

Depends on the playing resolution.
4K? save up and get 980.
1440P? depends on the game, consider 970 (Yes i know the last 512MB fkd) not all games utilize 4Gb Vram. - goolge that up with your games in mind.
1080P? 970, probably wont utilize the 4Gb.
Still too much? 960 4GB

Ram:

Chipest 8GB 1600Mhz.

SSD:

if on budget: Samsung 500GB evo.
if not: save up. 250Gb is not enough (From experience)

Psu:

Whatever recommended here. any 500/600 80+ bronze /silver from a good company will do (Just for future upgrades)

Case:

Im biased, but the Fractal R4 or the newest is a beast.

Cpu cooler:

Again biased and not updated on the matter, Any noctua product (NH-D14/15)

!Warning, cynical comment ahead!

Dvd:

I would go with the newest 1.44 floppy drives supporting up to 1.5KB/s if you want to go nostalgic and stuff...

But don't you need a bios update for the H87 to use the 4th gen of intel CPU's? and for the update is a older CPU needed. I read that somewhere maybe it's wrong.

he might verify with ther vender/site he is buying from for compability

just a mobo for a example:
http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4754#

click the cpu support list.
the i5-4460 is from F4 bios.
all cpu's are from F4 bios AKA the mobo ships with F4 minimum
