Garry's Mod is on sale right now for midweek madness and CS:S is on sale as part of the Linux sale. I'm planning on getting Garry's Mod, but should I also get CS:S so Garry's Mod game modes work or should I skip Counter Strike?

you need CSS for it to work or any valve game but CSS is recommended since some sweps require CSS for them to work.

But a lot of gamemodes use models/materials, etc, from other games, and CS:S is one of the most common requirements.

You sure? I used to play without CS:S and had the purple/black missing textures. It was bloody annoying.

Garry added replacement textures of a much lower quality, they're MUCH worse than regular CS:S textures, but at least its not purple and black.

Buy the GMOD and CS:S pack. Most game modes use CS:S textures, and trust me, you don't want to be playing without textures. You can, but little purple/black squares replace the missing textures
