I have some questions about special rules. (Yes, I have read the FAQ & searched the forums. Yes, I know they can only apply to private "invite only" giveaways.) For a place where people freely & generously give away games, I hope the general spirit of the site doesn't require specific legal or nitpicky technicalities, but I'm curious nonetheless.

For the purposes of this discussion, "special rules giveaways" do not apply to public giveaways or group restrictions. Public giveaways cannot have any special rules, and groups can have their own member requirements. Furthermore, giveaway packs with multiple games or DLC already have their own criteria for rerolls "if [the giveaway creator believes] the winner owns too many of the packaged games" (source: FAQ). And finally, blacklists and whitelists are their own beasts and do not matter for this type of reroll discussion because they do not result in a valid giveaway entry (or win) that might be overturned by a reroll. I'm talking about rerolls for winning entries on private, invite only "Comment/Don't comment xyz or I will ask for a reroll" giveaways, usually found through hidden links shared on the forum or in puzzles.

  1. If a private giveaway has special reroll rules, should the special rules be clearly posted like a disclaimer in the description, or can there be unposted secret rules that have legitimately been given prior authorization (for proper mod-approved rerolls, not just individual blacklisting)?
e.g., A user gets approval for special rules before creating the giveaway, but never discloses them in the description (or elsewhere), making it virtually impossible for most entrants to reasonable understand the giveaway creator's intended expectations. Would support grant or deny a reroll?
  2. Does a giveaway with special rules actually need to explicitly state "approved by support"?
  3. If a giveaway from a support user has special rules, does it need to explicitly state "approved by support"?
Not necessarily approved with communication from a different support member. Even if the support user approved of their own special rules for their own giveaway, should they at least add these magic words somewhere in the description in order to minimize the appearance of reroll abuse, or should they simply be given the benefit of the doubt by virtue of having an official title posted in parenthesis after their name? Personally, I think they should be given the benefit of the doubt and be allowed to do whatever they want (within the rules of the site), but it would be nice for consistency & transparency, as well as a reminder for others.
  4. Some private giveaways say "pending support approval" for their special rules. If the description is edited with special rules after a user enters, how is this handled? Does support check timestamps when considering rerolls? Is it even possible to view the changelog of an edited giveaway's description? This forum post links to a policy that states "you must receive the consent of site moderators before creating the giveaway" (emphasis added), but the main FAQ in the site header does not explain this detail.
Similar to all the questions above, if there is an invite only giveaway with special rules posted, can the rules be theoretically ignored by entrants if the description lacks the full phrase "approved by support"? As far as I can tell, including this phrase isn't officially a rule (yet), and I suppose that's my point. Even if there are special rules on the forum post or puzzle that provides the only direct link to access the private giveaway, currently the actual giveaway page might or might not repeat the requisite stipulations and conditions, which is confusing for long trains or puzzles that you might bookmark and come back to later. Unless moderators manually add a personal seal of approval on each private giveaway with special rules, there's also nothing stopping anyone from lying about approval for their special rules either, which brings me to my final question and suggestion.
  5. When creating a new giveaway, the description field is optional. If "invite only" is checked, should there be a yes/no follow-up radio button selection for "Does your private giveaway have any special rules that have been previously approved by support" and make the description mandatory?
This might be overkill, but depending on how many overall tickets are created for reroll requests, this might actually help support by having an unambiguous process to follow. Maybe adding this feature could trigger some magic text to be automatically applied to the description page, or even send a new ticket to support for approval. (To eliminate duplicate tickets, this would require rewording the "you must receive consent ... before creating the giveaway" policy and would basically be akin to asking for forgiveness rather than asking permission, but I suspect this is already happening somewhat if there is a backlog of ticket requests.) There are other ways to more visually distinguish a standard "invite only" giveaway from an "invite only with a special rule restriction" giveaway, but I strongly believe that a fourth giveaway category type is unnecessary. For giveaway creators and entrants acting in good faith the onus should be on both parties to carefully follow the proper guidelines outlined in private giveaway descriptions.

Should invite only giveaways with special reroll rules be encouraged to include the phrase "approved by support"?

Yes, good suggestion
No, that's too complicated
Meh, let support keep figuring it out on a case-by-case basis

I'd wager that the majority of people saying 'comment or reroll' haven't actually had the rules approved by support. That being said, I'm not gonna take that chance :P

Also, if someone on a public GA does say something about rerolling their giveaway when someone writes 'thanks' or something, I normally go out of my way to do the thing they asked me not to. (mainly so that if I do win, they get to learn about how the site works)

I suppose I should address your questions though, no you can't have secret rules on a private giveaway, it has to be posted there. For it to actually be enforceable, it has to have been approved by support prior to the GA being created and no, there doesn't need to be an extra box to check when creating the giveaway. If it's got special rules they should be in the description anyway.

Yes the rule has be stated, no doesn't have to say "approved by support". Honestly, most of support wants to do away with special rules altogether. AFAIK, we haven't approved any since v2 launch. I'd go into more detail, but I'm mobile right now.

So special rules pre-approved since SGv1 can still apply, right?
I had a pre-approved special rule that was requested to apply for "all future group giveaways for [a specific group]".

Some ppl like Zelghadis may have rules approved by support a lot of time ago, but this doesn't means all ppl know they need their rules to be approved to grant rerolls.
