ANNOUNCEMENT 02/22/16: Divided We Fall

A few individuals have expressed interest in co-operative play and I've mentioned in replies that I'm open to the idea. I've moved ahead with creating a forum in my inactive private group. Do let me know if you're interested.

I'm combat ready!

Please let me know if (as an outsider) you can view the forum or the discussion. I'm tired and it's possible I screwed it up somehow.

If changing the category for this buggered my discussion I will be sorely pissed.

EDIT:
I forgot I could just log out and check myself...

UPDATE 02/21/16: Misery

Fazeer Shah is a fucking asshole. - Janus XVI, Level 36 Prominent Hardcore Outlander

  1. Here's A Story About My Uncle

These two are public:

  1. DLC: GRID Autosport - Drag Pack.
  2. DLC: GRID Autosport - Road & Track Car Pack
    .

EDIT:
Rawr? Grr! What's up with those two characters under the giveaways. They're irritating me, someone kill them please.

UPDATE 02/18/16: Reasons

Reasons are the reason everything happens!

So... XIII died because of reasons. XIV also died because of reasons. I... am going to take a break until tomorrow (this) evening. Yes, I'm addicted. Also, sandrats are the cutest!

XIII walked into the Undercurrents and was greeted by a champion, a handful of flying bug... things, roaches, and did I mention the champion was a summoner? He retreated out after first contact and the realization that a few steps deeper was another champion, more flying bugs, the possible source of the roaches, and more roaches. Convinced he could survive the restrictive kiting he made some gear and fish adjustments and bravely reentered the dungeon to what would be his swift demise. The champion used it's AOE just as XIII entered, catching him in the hell fire as it quickly advanced and melted XIII's face with it's shout, like hot acidic jizz on a cold winter night. I am so done (I'm not).

XIV thought that snazzy Silence spell would prevent the champion he faced from casting it's fireball spell. It didn't. Nightingale laid a piece of parchment on his grave which read: "He just was not prepared. Next time send out the fast bowler." She really didn't, that was all XV's doing. He's a prick.

1. My backlog of games to giveaway is going to run out eventually. I should seek employment as a writer so I can afford more updates. XD

There's a funny story behind why I put down Remember Me. It's the reason Droning by numbers is featured on my profile (achievementstats.com is a respectable website, yes?). I was 7 hours into my first real adventure with Nilin when a close friend PM'd me asking for some technical help. Being the good friend I am I found a safe spot in a prison cell and paused my game. It was about 08:00-09:00. I hadn't slept the night before because I was having fun. Upon return I forgot the danger of the area I was in, walked out of the cell and stood looking around trying to remember which way I was supposed to go, not paying attention to the patrolling drone that was creeping up behind me. It killed me. After dying and cursing because I like to RP my characters, I noticed the achievement, decided "why the hell not", and loaded back into the game and allowed the drone to kill me 4 more times. I haven't touched Nilin since.

  1. Hell, I typed all of that then noticed a friend wishlisted Remember Me. So here's a level 3 giveaway for The Bureau: XCOM Declassified instead. Sorry? I hoped you enjoyed story time with Sej though. =/

UPDATE 02/16/16: Trust

Just a minor update.

♪ She says she has no time for you now. (But I keep replying to comments. "No time", sure.)

Janus XIII recently completed a very grueling Phase Beast Challenge in the Ossean Wastes. After felling his enemies he stood in front of 3 great doors deliberating which one to open with his one single key.

I'm liking door #2. But door #3 has got some style to it. Nightingale? <she hovers in front of #3 a moment> #3 then? <she flies away from #3 and lands in front of #1> Door #1?! Are you certain, dear? <she looks at me as if to say, "you've trusted me this far, haven't you?"> Alright, alright! #1 it is!

Janus XIII learned that day to not doubt his faithful companion. After all, he relies on her for everything else.

  1. Here's a level 2 giveaway for Overlord. Be aware that this doesn't include Overlord: Raising Hell to my knowledge.
  2. And here's another level 2 giveaway for Overlord II.

UPDATE 02/11/16: Emotions

Janus XI just died. In a comment somewhere I said X broke my heart, but XI actually gave me that sinking feeling. I think I need a hug.

To make matters worse I encountered 5 wandering enchanters. I also accumulated about 18,000 gold to pay for enchantments. Torchlight presented me with "all new" never before seen world maps. I even (finally) got the Well Dressed achievement! I died to a bunch of baby spiders that spawned around me after accidentally touching a cocoon. My life evaporated in under 3 seconds. There was nothing I could do. I encountered them moments before but I wasn't 100% certain they spawned from the cocoons because spider tunnels were present. I think I need a break until the weekend. No, I don't want to talk about it.

I hate this game of emotions we play.

The mixed skill build using your recommendations worked well, thank you, so I will be using it again for XII. I've also discovered a relatively good keybind layout that gets me around the movement issues. It's not 100% full proof but it's much better than the crap I had to endure before.

  1. Here's a cute kitty game. Yes, I actually looked for something cute to giveaway.
  2. And here's some other thing. Enjoy.
  3. Also, Betrayer is still open.

OP 02/10/16: My Edge of Tomorrow

I decided to get back into Torchlight II after a lengthy hiatus, and what better way than Hardcore Elite, am I right? I'm 0 for 10 at this point, with my highest character at level 17 (or 18), Janus X. He died to cave bats and the game's frustrating movement mechanics, meaning he stood his ground and attacked instead of retreating when I meant for him to retreat. He's the third character to die as a result of the mechanics and it's beginning to piss me off.

Janus I through X have all been Outlanders, and Janus XI will be an Outlander. I will complete this game with an Outlander even if it kills me (another 90 times). I will also do it without "heirlooms*" because I'm a masochist (not really, no) and I love it hard. 8D

Did I mention I went through 10 Hardcore Elite Outlanders in 4 days?
Did I mention I haven't completed Torchlight II on any other difficulty, so I actually don't know what the hell awaits me around the next corner?
Did I mention I love yogurt?

  • Have you completed Torchlight II on Hardcore Elite?
  • Which class did you choose?
  • Which pet did you choose?
  • Is it even possible without "heirlooms*"?

Note:
I refer to Unique or augmented items stored in Shared Stash and used to aid the journey of new characters or alternate characters as "heirlooms".

I would utilize it as intended if I didn't perma-die. "Fruit from a poisoned tree" kinda thing.

  1. Oh, and here's the level 3 giveaway for Betrayer, because I'm sentimental about this one and because I can. I can, can't I?
  2. Here's an additional level 2 public giveaway for Hitman: Absolution. Don't get too excited, it's just the base game. I probably should have made this this level 1, what was I thinking, I don't want to keep the key! DX

I haven't played through torchlight 2 yet either. I want to beat it with a hardcore character !

Well I only tried it with an engineer so far, but number2 died at the end of act 2...in an optional dungeon. But that's what happens when you think after 4 hours playing: Oh well, just ONE more dungeon and then I should really take a break.

I remember how happy I was when i had beaten torchlight 1 in all hardcore difficulties - that was nice. Want to achieve that with TL2, too D:!

I don't have a ton of time in tl2 (123 hours), haven't played it in months and haven't tried hardcore elite, but IMO outlander is the weakest class. Mage can give you the range and damage output while having a much safer play-style that doesn't require basic attacks (which as you mentioned can lead to movement issues).
With any class, if you hold down a button while clicking (can't remember which) you can force a character to move to a spot rather than attacking the guy that is vaguely in the area of your cursor that the game thinks you are trying to target. You could also do the opposite so regular clicks move and shift-clicks (or whatever the button is) attacks. It takes some getting used to but is basically a necessity for classes that use basic attacks.
I'm pretty certain the pets are only different in appearance, not stats. The flying ones don't even get to reach areas that others can't, or anything like that. You probably eventually want to feed it a permanent mutation fish of some kind anyway, so it won't matter what it looked like to start with at that point.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm not sure which button you're referring to that forces a character to move though, unless that's the use of the "Ctrl / attack valid targets" hotkey?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

could be, sorry I can't remember or be bothered to look deeper ;-P
I just know that by the time I was on NG++ or so I was getting 1-shotted by a lot of stuff even in early levels (which sounds like what hardcore elite is/will be for you even on the first playthrough), so I had to become more precise with my movement which lead to having to kinda relearn some clicks. I actually rebound whatever the command is to one of my mouse thumb buttons I think. One of the problems I ran into with outlander is that my range quickly went further than my screen could actually see, so it was kinda useless. I'd often have to get closer than my max range (and risk the 1HK) just to target properly, while a mage could still kill those offscreen enemies.

The 1-2 hit death is madness indeed. I'm not even sure what kind of gear to use for Outlander because nothing seems to help. High HP, high armor, it all just melts. I will enchant more on Janus XI. I did meet a master(?) enchanter on Janus X but I didn't realize they walk off and vanish so I only upgraded my bow once because I was low on gold. I immediately regretted not burning through all my gold for at least one more enchant.

I've noticed the range issue, I'm actually considering not dropping too many points into the range skill on my next run. I'll also go through the hotkeys next game. Come to think of it, there is a Move hotkey separate from the Move/Acttack hotkey. That might be what you're referring to. I'll have to try rebinding that somewhere else, my current rebind definitely isn't helping.

Honestly, gungineer is my favourite playthrough so far. I only halfway played engineer and embermage and new game +'d with berserker(or whatever m8). Berserker was really boring to play, to be honest, but gungineer is amazingly fun to play as.

Hardcore elite? HAH! Yeah! Right!
So, Berserker class is what I beat the game as.
I think I had the wolf but honestly not sure. Actually, no, I had the headcrab.
Heirlooms were the orange special items, right? Yeah, if you have amazingly enchanted items(gemmed? I forget how it exactly worked) then maybe but late-game Normal got pretty hard if you didn't get lucky with item drops, so I'm not sure how "Hardcore elite" would be.

Elite is insane as soon as you enter The Frosted Hills. Shit gets real, deadly real, and the drops are crap.

Edited my description to include what I mean by "heirlooms", which I should have included before I submitted:

Yeah, I just don't play perma-death. It seems like a waste of time to me, less-so when I've already beaten the game, but same idea. I stopped playing Torchlight 1/2 because I felt like I was playing the same thing over and over each area, despite being on Normal.

I've felt that before. For me it's the background music and the ambient sounds though. If I'm not fighting for my life I start getting a bit bored. I guess Elite helps in that way. It keeps me engaged because I must actively move around to avoid enemy projectiles or melee attacks else I will die.

Torchlight II is a pretty good game, and also it may get really frustrating when you start dying on a regular game. Hardcore makes it a long HnS roguelike.

When I played, I used to have a pet wolf on a Berserker. I must say, that class is really fun at first, but it gets too boring on the long run (too much lifestealing and such).

The caster one is meant to be really fun, I'm planning on playing it!

I considered going Embermage but bows man, bows! Although, every time I get a cool bow I not so shortly after get a not so cool "shotgonne" that has better dps. sigh

On a side note, it would've been nice to dual wield crossbows like Demon Hunters from Diablo.

Check my achievement showcase on my Steam profile. Apparently I like maps. I also like to cast spells from a distance, rather than take the risk of close-in combat which makes me more reliant on the movement mechanics. I see you're committed to an outlander, which is excellent for ranged attacks, although embermage has easier ranged spells. From memory (it's been a while) I have completed the game as both an Embermage and an Outlander. I think I did it as an Engineer as well, but I'm not sure. It's great! One of my favourite games. Have a look at the skill trees, and I recommend emphasising those with ranged attacks such as Shadowshot, and also those that generate minions such as Shadowlings.

What the hay is "Noble Lineage*... oh, I want that! My pet hawk needs a rest. XD

I've been building Poison Burst but I haven't survived long enough to get into Shadowling Ammo. I'll split the points next round and try both. I kill a lot faster using Rapid Fire and I'd like to see if it will proc Shadowling Ammo as it does Poison Burst. I've been looking at Shadowshot, I'll try it. Thanks!

I'm mainly committed to Outlander because I chose to start Hardcore Elite with it and then died like a nub. It's my personal challenge now.

  • I start the game on elite directly (not hardcore, it's too frustrating) because torchlight 1 was so easy ^^
And I tried EVERY characters and died few times before I made my character choice to go further
  • I complete the game with embermage (elite), and made half the way with berserker (elite) and I finally got bored with the game ;)
  • I thought all pets do the same things (maybe I'm wrong). I chosed a dog each time just to be sure I won't confuse him with ennemy in the battle xD
  • Obviously Yes!

He died to cave bats and the game's frustrating movement mechanics, meaning he stood his ground and attacked instead of retreating when I meant for him to retreat.

That's why I don't try the Hardcore option in hack'n slash ;)

No. Don't really care for permadeath mechanics, tbh.

I've beaten it with a few different classes, at different difficulty levels. Probably my favorite build was a two-hand melee engineer. At later levels I could just pop his bubble spell, run into the middle of a crowd of enemies, slam the ground a few times with a spell and everything on the screen would die. From outlander, my recollection was that the sand glaive spell (or whatever it was called) was a must, esp in later levels. Especially in enclosed levels/dungeons, you can just spam it from barely offscreen and it'll bounce around and kill everything. Been a long time since I played outlander tho.

Weighted companion cube.

Not sure? Like I said, I don't really go in for permadeath runs, so.

Glaive Throw*, the blue glaive skill Outlanders start with.

I swapped it out on my last 3 characters for Rapid Fire as I found it to be more helpful early on, however, I've found myself fighting an uphill battle trying to unlock it's Tier 2 range increase. Glaive Throw would come in very handy in the interim, and against those insane casters. Thanks for the idea, I'll see how it works on XI.

sigh I'm going to need more mana. A lot more mana.
