What are some good games that have the RPG elements of gaining XP and leveling up, carrying and equiping items similar to Castlevania SOTN? Please tell me I love this genre, the games need to be on PC though. Thanks!

This is a very valid question I would also like to know. Rogue Legacy is one that I would be willing to throw into that category. Not quite as in depth with items, and you cannot change them when inside the castle, but I would almost be willing to say it could be likened to a rogue-like SotN (which, by the way, I am playing through again now on the PSP version, and is also one of my favorite games of all time).

This might sound silly, but is there any way to "tag" this thread for reference at later dates? Or somewhere in the profile to see past threads you commented on? This thread heavily pertains to me, however, my memory would fail me I am sure.

La-Mulana is good I hear. I have it, but I haven't really played it yet. I heard it's pretty hard.

A Valley without wind 1 and 2 are the closest I have seen to SOTN.

La Mulana is the best Metroidvania I've ever played, arguably better than Metroid and Castlevania. My friend Steven introduced me to this and we both fell in love. It's very difficult, but it's an amazing experience.

I don't think there's any leveling in La-Mulana. Best you can do is find orbs that increase your max health. You can get items too. It's a decent game.

I'd say Rogue Legacy is a little closer to what you want, but really, I can't think of any game quite like the Castlevania series, it's something pretty special.

+1 for Guacamelee, great game! And should it ever be released on PC, Shadow Complex.

+2. Guacamelee is the best Metroidvania game I've played in a decade.

I think Shadow Complex might be the only Metroidvania game I've played since the first two Castlevania games on NES. If its not done well, I get really tired of backtracking in video games. It just feels like lazy design.

I have a copy of Guacamelee from the HIB. I never gave it much of a thought because I thought it was a fighting game (not a big fan of those), but I'll check it out! Thanks for the rec!

I thought it was just a melee platformer, but I'm much more curious now that I know its a metroidvania game.

Free version is good, paid Cave Story+ version is also worth the price (and used to be in bundles often enough)

La Mulana is the absolute best one. No other metroidvania game comes close in terms of length and content. It's hard as all hell though. If you're not using a guide, it'd probably be a good idea to keep a notebook with notes on the different puzzles and rooms, and even then you'll probably get stuck.

Yup. Keep note-book a hand - it's design is a deliberate throwback to the times when a computer with 10Mhz 8-bit cpu and 128k of memory was considered powerful. Sequel that's being worked on is supposed to have automapping/built in notes as one of the big new features as I understand.

Coming soon (already Greenlit) is Ghostsong. It's the most promising Metroidvania I've seen in ages. Watch the full 10 minute video (on the Greenlight) and see if you don't feel as hyped up for this as I am! The gameplay will have a Dark Souls element to it - punishing, tough gameplay, with enemies you must learn how to fight. I love Metroidvanias, and this seems like it will really be special.. The atmosphere, art, music / sound design, gameplay.. uhHHHHHHhgggggGGGggg WANT.

The release date is still not fixed, Matt White the game creator is keeping us updated on KickStarter about it but the last time he talked about a release date he simply said he was aiming for 2014 be Fall or Winter. Personally I don't mind that the original May 2014 release date was pushed back because he is clearly working on it and he keeps giving us updates about his progress.

Luckily this is the kind of dev. who wants quality over a fast dev. time. One of their comments posted 13 Jun on the Greenlight page - "thanks guys for your kind feedback -- I'm aiming for later this year, but it's very hard predicting these things as I'm doing most of the work alone and development is a fluid process. My #1 priority, as played out as it may sound, is release something that feels finished, fun, and quality -- That's the thing that matters most to me of anything "

On 17 Jun a guy called Guruguru posted "it's really a catch 22. He wants to keep people updated, but he probably wants to keep as much of the game under wraps to give you that feeling of exploring and first time experience seeing something. Either way, patience is a virtue and I would rather him work hard on the game then make posts every day."

The dev replied 2 days later with "I could post spoilery videos to show some cool stuff, and every now and then I do/will, but it's sort of a difficult position as Guru points out. You want it to be more fun when it's all done, but you also want to share what you're working on! I'm trying to do both."

Looking over the discussions, you can clearly see a dedicated dev, who actually keeps abreast of new questions asked etc., and answers them. Check this thread for a nice example with some good answers from the dev. Here's another cool comment from the dev.

Steamworld Dig, Strider, Teslagrad, Shovel Knight, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Shantae, Full Bore, Inescapable, Magicians and Looters, and A.R.E.S. One that's been greenlit, but not yet on Steam is Operation Smash. Played a bit of it, and it was fun.

Steamworld Dig and La Mulana are two of the best ones you could grab. Guacamelee is probably my least favorite. It was alright, but just too simple. You need more than just a couple quippy signs in the background to hold my interest. THat Ghostsong game looks like tits on a giraffe, can't wait to try it out.

β€œThe best Castlevania game in years...Slain is a fun retro platformer with a slick combat system, great visuals, and a killer soundtrack.”
8/10 – Gaming Trend

(It doesn't have the RPG elements of gaining XP and leveling up, carrying and equipping items but it gives you what you need in order to progress )
