I just started Drakensang, but for the life of my I cannot decide on a character... Summoner? Archer? Tank? Sexy Amazon? Sexier Dwarf?

For those that don't have it, you can find character archetypes here

Feel free to toss in name, backstory, and (I haven't started yet, so I don't know if this applies) alignment. I'll decide in two hours. Best character wins! Oh, and if you have more experience with the game, you're welcome to do a whole custom build and not just pick an archetype.

I was leaning towards summoner, but I wasn't sure how the spell system works. Do I have to summon my pets every single fight and then wait in between them to recover my spells per day like in Neverwinter Nights?

Archers are fun, but I was looking at the wiki, and it looks like there's only a long bow and short bow. There are a couple different arrow types, but I would hope for at least a little variety... Unless of course, the wiki just isn't complete.

That's interesting because I got sick of rogues in NWN for exactly the same reason you like them. It was just "Get behind the enemy. Stab." Which, granted, has one more step than a barbarian (Stab), but it did get old after a bit...

I would recommend against rouge-type characters in Drakensang (its prequel, River of Time is another story though, there rogues are good).

It is important to note that no class forces you into any given playstyle, though their starting skills will encourage you to play a certain way. There are some things that are limited by your character class though. Characters are not spell-trained can't use certain spells. This includes the Charlatan, who is in fact a limited mage.

If you want to go the magic-user rout, then I would recommend focusing more on summons & buffs/debuffs than damage spells. Damage spells feel a bit underpowered. Also, read up on what spells you actually want to use. There is some overlap between them, and you can't mass-summon (once summon can be active at any given time), which means that spending points in multiple summons might be a bad idea.

As for what to play, I found the Metamage to be fun.

------- Spoiler ahead -------

You might be interested in knowing what character classes you'll be able to recruit, before deciding. The recruitable characters have the following classes: Charlatan, Fighter (relatively late), Alchemist (very late), Rogue, Mercenary, Spellweaver (relatively late), Archer (late), Amazon, Battlemage (relatively late)

They are not really good at anything. Another character with some other skills can easily fill the role of a rogue, and contribute more to a fight. That being said, considering how open ended the system is in terms of character building, creating a rogue will just put you at a minor disadvantage, and the game is not too hard to beat with a rogue-type character (it was what I played during my first playthrough).

I had no problems beating the game with a rogue. It also lets you open chests from the start of the game, which was important for me lol

A Dwarf obviously. A badass Dwaven blacksmith in a sexy leather apron.

Go burglar, so you can sneak around and steal everyone's stuff! Then use whatever awesome stuff you find to breeze through combat.

Disclaimer: Having never played the game, I have no idea how much stuff there is to steal or if it's of any practical use.
