You know that WRPGs pre-dates JRPGs and that the JRPG sub-genre grew out of games such as Wizardry, right?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, ALL of early jrpgs are just blatant ripoffs of D&D and early western cRPGs >_>

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

JRPG are clones of western ones, as these guys said. Have a clue about your topic before making ridiculous claims.

i know all that, but jrpgs my childhood, sorry for the poor choice of words.

dragon warrior was my first rpg and never got much into wizardry or eye of the beholder

bastion

bastion is to an RPG like mario to an FPS

EDIT: but on steam it says RPG

Well it does have a great story.

it does, and i love the voice acting

Bastion is a great game, but it is by no means an RPG.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Having a good story doesn't automatically make it an RPG.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's called an Action RPG. Like Crysalis on NES, or Secret of Mana on SNES (I know Secret of Mana is technically the second game in a series, but I have NO idea how to spell the name of the series., Seken Detsetsu or something? .-.)

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

its just the lack of a more open world makes it less of an action rpg like the ones you mentioned. (btw Secret of Mana is one of my fav games of all time and i finished seiken densetsu 3 too, give it a try its awesome)

Comment has been collapsed.

True, but the elements and playstyle to make it technically an Action RPG. Another example of it not seeming like one, but technically being one, are the Mega Man Battle Network series. Technically it's a Tactical RPG, but very few consider it one

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Very few would argue that it's not an RPG series. It clearly is.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, but a TACTICAL RPG? Come on.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

true, tactic on a 4x4 grid (if i remember correctly, didnt play much of the first one and didn care about the rest) isnt very tactical...

its more like an action/beat em up with great story to me since you cant backtrack at all, its incredibly linear when compared to other action rpgs too... seams like the only thing that makes it an rpg (besides the story, almost all games have a story) is the weapon lvl system, and that is till very basic.

PS. I love bastion

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But it's not even an Action RPG. Why do so many people say this? Just because it has a weapon level system?

played a little two worlds 2 and it seems really good but i want to get and finish first one before playing the second, and i just got drakensang :D

The first one was broken, I heard it changed its engine to the engine where two worlds 2 runs in but I don't know if it does work any better now.

you mean on steam? I haven't seen a patch on the retail version.

I think steam not sure, I've seen a video (I haven't played the game after patch)

Torchlight probably, both Two Worlds games were also bundled and Two Worlds 2 is actually still available on Bundle Stars. Link Oh and Mass Effect 2 was in an Indie Gala Bundle, though it was an Origin key.

Bastion by far. But good luck finding it. It was in HIB V, which is one of the most saught after bundles, and it was in the very first HIB Weekly, which wasn't too popular

1 decade ago

+1 for Bastion. I bought it at the HiB Weekly and this game is really great, especially the soundtrack.

Dungeons of Dredmor by a longshot. It's much better than Bastion (which isn't even an RPG) and a bit better than Torchlight (though this depends quite a lot on taste.)

Bastion is an Action RPG. See above please

1 decade ago

Comment has been collapsed.

I read your post in which you call it an action RPG before I wrote my post. You didn't make any defense of it being an RPG; you just said it was one. Anyway, it's not an action RPG. It's an action game that doesn't have any RPG mechanics.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Completely agree. Also, it's overrated.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think it's equal to the ratings overall: it's a good but not astounding game. It's fun and has great narration but doesn't really do anything new. It combines old stuff in unusual ways and has great narration.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Agreed on all counts. It is a well done game. I just think it gets disproportionate accolades because it is an impressive game relative to most indie games.

Bastion is a hack-and-slasher with loadouts. It has core gameplay similar to hack-and-slash RPGs like Diablo, but there is no actual character progression.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think it's more like Crusader: No Regret or Zombies Ate My Neighbors, but that fits well enough.

There was the definitive D&D pack over at GOG, but it may still come back until their summer sale ends. That's all you need, really. If you haven't played any oldie RPGs, you should probably start with Neverwinter Nights from those; that'll kick your ass so hard you'll be insta-trained to think right within the genre. Well it did that to me at least...

EDIT - just to tease you with the games included: NWN Diamond Edition, NWN 2 complete set or whatever, Baldur's Gate 1+2 both complete, Icewind Dale 1+2 both complete, Temple of Elemental Evil, Planescape: Torment, Demon Stone, Dragonshard

Also, Two Worlds. Supposedly it's so bad it's fucking great. Hilarious mistranslations and whatnot; it's top priority in my backlog ;)

Drakensang from Groupees Be Mine 8. Easily the best RPG ever included in an Indie Bundle.

Thomas was alone is a good one, it's an rpg because you play the role of everyone in that game, pretty good

I played 5 min of that game and quitted it, the game was completely stupid and awful to me, hopefully I didn't activated my key that I bought, I activated one I ninja from this forum. But opinions are different, if you say it's good, have to be good in some way I didn't saw.

"Released" is the wrong word, "victim" is the correct. So Torchlight, Two Worlds 2 are the best RPGs victims of a bundle.

Well bit of a 'thread resurrection-ish' but Nuuvem is having a huge sale, lots of RPG and stuff for cheap. Mass Effect trilogy for ~$30

The first thing I ever bought from GOG was a bundle that included Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics.
