They are out there. We watch them. We love to hate them. They are the end of the world or disaster movie genre. And I'm surprised that nobody has brought up this movie subject before. Least of all me. I LOVE these kinds of movies. Movies like zombie apocalypse, asteroid strikes, alien invasion, weather events or volcanic or even plague movies. All fit under that type.

EG- Dante's Peak and The Day After Tomorrow are two of my favorites. 12 Monkeys will always stand out as a classic of that genre as well.

And yes, I do count in The Worlds End Simon Pegg movie. I loved that too.

So, do any of you people out there like these movies too? And if so, recommend some titles to the community that you think should stand out.

My all time favorite movie is Dawn of the Dead (1978)

Shaun Of The Dead. It's a coincidence that the above answer is Dawn Of The Dead. XD I had my answer ready before the page even loaded. Haha.

Add I loved The Worlds End. Great idea and well executed. I have yet to see a Simon Pegg movie that I did not like.

That entire trilogy, Blood and Ice Cream was fantastic.

Yeeeeees! It's funny because Simon Pegg movies are the only movies that I would watch on TV when I saw them playing on a station despite owning the DVDs... I can't pass them up ever. Lol.

For the zombie apocalypse genre (classics aside) i quite liked 28 Days Later. On the disaster movies my pick would be The Day After Tomorrow, but mostly because most examples of this genre are kind of bad overall.

Sunshine. Although it's a corner case due to not spending much time showig the global devestation and such. Would be even better if they didn't cut so many corners on the Science part of the Science Fiction though.

The Core Because it's hilarous fodder for nitpicking and ridiculing.

Possibly The Omega Man as well. Despite not sharing the name, it's the better adaption of the novel "I am Legend".

Does Children of Men count? Not technically the end of the world (or it might be, depending on how you interpret the ending), but more depressing than any zombie movie I've ever seen.

Yes. It does.

Goodie! If it didn't count, my second pick would be Dr. Strangelove. Another one that's light on special effects spectacle and a lot more heavy on the psychological impact.

The Quiet Earth

By today's standards nothing too special, but back then it was awesome. :)

Poor fella. I personally don't agree with the "message" this episode tries to pass, but it's a good story and a great episode.

I love both 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. Still waiting for a sequel for these. One that I also really like is Snowpiercer. Although, my favorite of them all is Zombieland.

Edit: let's not forget about The Book of Eli which is fantastic as well.

Dawn of the Dead (2004) and 28 Days Later, no doubt.
Shaun of the Dead is a very close 3rd, though.

I'm sorry. But I can NOT watch ANYTHING directed by Christoper Nolan. He makes the same movie with different titles every time. And they are ALWAYS crap.

But to each their own. If you like what he does, go for it.

I love these types of movies too so can't really claim a favorite, but here's a bunch I've watched. Good and bad included since everyone's got different tastes. I tried to remove any that were already mentioned, but my apologies if I missed any.

2012
Reign of Fire (does a dragon apocalypse count?)
War of the Worlds
Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse
The Girl with All the Gifts
Edge of Tomorrow
Independence Day
World War Z
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Legion
Cargo (netflix)
The Rain (netflix series)
Skyline
The Darkest Hour
Stake Land
Train to Busan
Cloverfield
The Darkest Dawn
Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead
Daylight's End

Train to Busan is awesome. I honestly NEED more good zombie movies. At least this year we had Cargo which is pretty nice. I'm gonna take this opportunity to comfort all the zombie lovers out there that, like me, were impaired by the crazy "EHRMARGERD TOO MANI ZOMBIES EVERYWHERE" trend and now are suffering from the Great Zombie Drought™. There were never too many zombies. Just too many people that suck.

I have yet to see Cargo, but it looks good. I did see the short it was based off of and it was great.

Nuclear war counts, right?
I only recently got to watch Miracle Mile and it was quite enjoyable.

Yes they do. Especially the classic The Day After.

But The Divide comes to mind as an excellent nuclear war/psychological thriller for that type.

Yea, I liked The Divide.
There is also the British one, Threads. Bleak as hell.

I don´t watch a lot of disaster movies but i remember how i watched "the core" togehter with my brother. After the first minutes when they land the space shuttle he said "this for sure is a brilliant piece of crap". We had to laugh all the time it was so hilarious. 10/10

Melancholia
Take Shelter ( not sure if it counts :p )
Waterworld (not because it is a good movie but because the setting is less common than astroids virus zombies etc)
and some Classics (but you could actually list every 60-80 years sci fi movie here^^)
The Andromeda Strain 1971
Planet of the Apes 1968
The Time Machine 1960
Logan’s Run
