^ what the title says

as it is now, it's pretty impossible to find one's discussion participation by username

Yeah, it would be a great idea. Also a subscription system to bookmark certain discussions would be good

This is a good idea too!

I suggested the same on beta, so yes, I want it. Using google is inconvenient(

Nah. Let's keep users some sort of privacy. Though it would be great if we could do it with our own profiles in order to keep a track from our posts.

What privacy you want for public posts?

We all say some stupid stuff from time to time. Allowing anyone an easy way to keep of track of that is a bad thing in my opinion.

1) One can still use google to find what you said, if it's public.
2) If you don't want people to track bad things you've done - don't do bad things.

They still can and I don't mind, point is, as MuthaFukinRick said, it'll make witch hunting easier.
Some people are already concerned about "abusive" blacklisting (though people can make their own decisions), do we need to go even further that way?

It's makes search easier. For what purposes will be used search - it's up to the user. You know, kitchen knives can be used to kill people, but they still sold freely. I believe that a convenient search is a good feature, even if someone can use it for bad purposes. I want good features for good people.

I feel it would add more transparency & accountability to one's presence on this site if others could easily see their past trolling or rude remarks.

My point exactly. People can be asses in threads they deem as useless or out of the place, while being serious and / or helpful in other threads. Shall they be ostracized for doing so?

Facilitating witch hunts. Yay!

Why would there be witch hunts?

(though props for the Holy Grail gif :P)

Mainly because people keep being idiots in the sense that they keep harping previous/old behavior from users?

some newbie posted reflink/ trade post in off topic discussion...it's gonna stick with the user "hey you're the guy who didn't read faq, shut up"

As long as there's a privacy setting for it.

Privacy for public posts? That's oxymoron.

Well, I wouldn't use it, but I know some people wouldn't want someone using something from the past against them

Then better not to do things that can be used against them in public. Why are you so concerned about bad people?

Because people can change over time.

That has got to be one of the stupidest posts I've read on this forum...

Never seen a bad person who became good

Seriously???
Most bad people end up being good. When you're a 14 years old scumbag, you later realize you were a scumbag, and learn to stop being one. I've seen it happen more than once. I personally was kind of an asshole all the time when I was younger. I learned to be considerate of others through a bit of effort. Now it just doesn't feel right to be a scumbag anymore, so I rarely am. I still do some bad things from time to time, mind you, but I tend to regret them later.

Well, maybe it's just my bad luck... Most scumbags I know learned to hide their true identity, but they remain quite the same.

nope. bad for puzzle-makers - let users too easy search all previous puzzles and solutions to them ;p yes I know you can use google - but with using google it at least require some work from you and some basic skills, so better odds for puzzle solvers who use these compared to no-effort checking puzzler profile.

Then I guess people could make search privacy an opt-in thing. If they are into puzzles they can do it, but the default setting could be public.

Permalink

then it becomes pointless, because not only puzzlers will use opt-in ;p you said here that "it would add more transparency & accountability to one's presence on this site if others could easily see their past trolling or rude remarks." - any troll, scammer, whiner etc would disable this option as well.

Yeah but for the majority, who don't bother with it, it would remain public. Tons of people don't go through the settings when they register to a site. And seeing someone set their discussions to private would be suspicious at least.

then you'd start suspecting every puzzle maker of suspicious / shameful activities ;p

well whatevs, I still think implementing it would be more useful than bad

But then there would be a sense in making new puzzles, not doing the same thing over and over again. I think it's good.

if you are so clever go ahead and make a new original puzzles all the time making sure that nothing you used in them was never used by you before as well as not by anyone else. Seriously - easier said than done. I've spent hours thinking out some of the trics I used in my old puzzles, and it would be worthless if you'd only be able to use the trick once ;p

Oh man, if I was not so lazy((
Actually, I like solving puzzles a lot, but in most (but not all) of them knowing of previous puzzles is almost useless. Yes, in the rest of cases this search could help. But, if solver is smart enough to search for previous puzzles - I believe he deserves the instrument for this. I used google in every and all puzzle I solved. Is this bad?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

it's not bad at all - I mention various usage for google multiple times in my puzzle guide after all - but to use google you have to do something - format questions right, use image search etc - it requires some effort, some research - on the other hand in example proposed in this topic it gives each and every user answers on the silver platter without ny effort whatsoever.

Well, I don't think that previous puzzles of same author are so much help. Unless all his puzzles are copy-paste)
Anyway, your opinion makes sense (unlike all this "privacy" talks from other people here.)
But at least we could have an option to see our own previous posts?

all your previous posts would be a mess I think (for me it would mean list of 21k posts for example), and you already cqan view all your previous discussions here: http://www.steamgifts.com/discussions/created

Well, not quite a mess, they are sorted by date/time. As for threads - I have two of them, not much to search)

A lot of the time I use old puzzles as inspiration to develop new ones. I don't copy, but I build upon the basic ideas to suit my own needs. It also would have helped a lot last year when I was making the puzzle history posts.

I don't really see the point of seeing other people's stuff but I would personally like it for myself. It'd be helpful to find all the threads that I've posted in, including closed ones. Sometimes I still want to see what people have said in a thread but it was closed and I forget the title of it so I can't find it again. Other times I just have difficulties remembering which threads I've posted in even if they're open ._.

I do make use of my bookmark to track threads but that's rather annoying as it clutters it all up and then I have to go back and delete once I'm done with them, etc...
