So, after a long period of hesitation, I've decided to get a Steam Link during this Summer sale. It has arrived today and it works (yay). Thing is, never have I ever owned a console (except that weird post-communistic rebuild of SNES in the 90s) and therefore I know nothing about controllers. I ruled out the Steam controller, because it involves touchpads and touchpads don't really like my cold hands and often refuse to work for me or are really imprecise.
To be honest, I only know that there are PS4 and Xbox One controllers and was thinking about buying one of those. That said, I've recently won a Steam Controller Companion and the creator of GA informed that in general there are some issues with Xbox controllers and Steam Link when using them wirelessly, so the obvious choice would be PS4 controller. I know that there are some other choices, but I have literally zero idea about those.

So, I would appreciate any input on this matter, I don't really have a spending limit, but I'm probably gonna try to stay in a reasonable price range (I don't even know what that would be). Do you own a controller, which one would you suggest getting, maybe some non-standard one? I'm open for all suggestions (unless it's an eXistenZ controller).

Below, something to feed your tired fingers after telling me what should I buy :P

I got a Steam Link for XMas last year. Bought an Ortz XBox wireless adapter from Amazon for $12.99, then picked up some cheap wireless XBox 360 controllers. Works like a charm. I can also move the adapter from the Steam Link to my PC and play with the wireless controllers there.

Would it be possible to have those adapters plugges in both on Link and PC and just use them where I need them?

I think that would probably work. You would have to re-pair your controller with whichever adapter you were using but its pretty painless. The only annoying thing with the adapter is if you are using Windows 10 it doesnt automatically install and you have to go and point it to the drivers everytime

I don't use Windows 10 and intend to use it in the nearest future, so that would not be a problem :P That setup could work for me though.

Steam controller is not perfect, I don't like the XYAB buttons dimension and position, but it has some amazing features, you can totally remap it and create your perfect configuration for every game. I suggest it with the steam link and I have problem with touchpads too. I also use an XBOX 360 controller and I tried a XBOX ONE controller and I like them. No experience about PS4 controllers.

The thing is, I'm probably gonna keep playing games on PC and only play with Steam Link occasionally and it's probably going to be a fighting game. With that in mind I don't think I'll need the features it offers. Have you tried xbox one controller with Steam Link? I've heard you can't use them wirelessly, is that true?

How does the Steam controller stands against Xbox One joystick?? Any comments about it's use in fighting/racing/strategy games???

It depends a lot from the game. The configurability is a great advantage in many games, but in others it is better to have two sticks and buttons more accessible.

I use a 360 controller & receiver because that's what I happen to have but the d-pad on them isn't great. I haven't noticed any issues with the connectivity though.

+1 for the Steam controller... It works on a lot of games without configuration but, you can completely change the controls should you need/want to. For example, I made my left touchpad (left/right axis) steering and the right touchpad (up/down axis) the throttle in Grid and it worked, no problem. Took a lot of getting used to though...

i use a logitech f310 and want to get more for couch gaming with friends (i’ve had a full pc connected to my tv for years). it's not wireless (i didn't want wireless) and doesn't have vibration, but is fully xbox 360 compatible. never had a game on steam that supports gamepads not work with it. i like how the two analog sticks are in the middle instead of dpad and right analog stick with the left stick over by the shoulder.

i also soldered a usb plug onto an original xbox controller and have used that with some success, but i wouldn't use that with a game that needed all the buttons (had some weirdness with arkham city).

I was thinking about custom controllers, do they offer anything more than the standard xbox/ps ones? Or is it only a matter of a keys layout?

i bought it for the layout and because i see logitech as less evil than microsoft or sony, even though they did stop making the best mouse wheel ever invented.

this one has an x / d switch on the bottom which i read is for compatibility with older games, but i've always had it set to x. it has 2 analog sticks, a d pad, x / y / a / b, back, start, logitech (works like xbox button), lb, rb, lt, rt. also a mode button with a light next to it that i can't remember what it's for (maybe switching if the analog stick or d pad is primary) and always leave with the light off. it may also support custom button mappings with logitech's gaming software, but again i haven't used that because it always just works how it want it to by default, or i use mouse + keyboard.

I'd go for the Xbox One controller or the Steam controller, but I personally don't like the latter one... just doesn't look comfortable to lift your finger and drag time and time again when aiming instead of using a joystick..

I tend to stick to Xbox 360 controllers with the official adapter, but have used non Microsoft ones that work fine as well

I have no idea how steam links handles controllers, but I'd stick with an xbox controller :\
