Hey guys, I need a little help. I'm going to give some short reviews of a few games I've played, and I'm hoping that the community can recommend me some games that you think I might like based on my likes/dislikes.

Sad to say, there isn't a hidden giveaway (you're welcome for Skyrim) and neither will there be any prizes. Here goes!

Batman AA - Absolutely loved it, but I wish it were a little longer (challenges don't count). Last boss fight wasn't very impressive though.
CS:S - For some reason I prefer this to TF2, as awesome as TF2 is. Probably because CS1.6 was a big part of my early gaming life.
Diablo 2 - Loved it until hacked items started flodding the market.
Titan's Quest: Immortal Throne - This is probably one of the few games I regret buying. I was hoping it would be a good D2 clone, but it was horrible. Story and monsters were dull, bosses were ridiculously hard, maps were boring and frustrating.
Might and Magic VI: Mandate of Heaven - Loved every bit of it.
Deus Ex: HR - I've replayed this game 3 times already lol, and it's still fun everytime. Story is great. Made me try out Hitman 2 but...
Hitman 2: SA - People say I should have gone with Blood Money, and I think they are right. Though I think this is still pretty good for a 2002 game.
Mafia - Loved it. Mafia 2, not so much.
Hard Reset - Too short to be able to enjoy this game fully. It's pretty much just lots of mobs coming at you all the time.
Half-Life series - Who doesn't love HL?
Bioshock - Was fun, but a little too scary for my liking, especially when playing at night. Yes I'm a wimp.
Monkey Island series - Grew up playing these. Played MI2 when it came in those huge diskette thingies. Was what made me an Adventure game fan.
Sonic Generations - I have to say, as a long-time Sonic fan, this kind of disappointed me a little. It's beautiful and all, but the gameplay and controls are a little clunky, and it's hard as hell. All I do is pretty much die, purchase 1-ups, and then die some more. That took out quite a bit of the fun.
Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy - JRPGs, always awesome.

Well that's it for now, I think I covered quite a bit of genres. I've got some games in my wishlist too that I'm going to try out some day, if anyone could take a look at that and let me know if I'm going in the right direction, that would be great too!

In less than 2 months you can play Diablo 3 :) Or try to borrow a D3 beta account from a buddy to try out the first part of Act 1.

Oh yeah I'll definitely give it a try, not sure how long it'd last me though. I think I've outgrown MMOs :/

Eh... I've played MMO's and I've played D3 beta. It is mainly the always-online and the auction house that reminds me of a MMO, aside from that it is just a proper hack n slash similar to Diablo 2.

Since you tried MM VI, try the VII, it's my favorite. Also recommanding Deus Ex (the 1st one) sine you enjoyed HR, you should have no problem with graphics since you enjoyed even older games.

If you enjoy good RPGs you could try most of Bioware games : KotOR, Dragon Age : Origin (only origins not the 2), Mass Effect, Neverwinter Nights...

You wishlist is mostly made of must play games, if only at least 1 time. I'd put Darksiders, Braid and Portal 2 up top.

It's not often I see people who have played M&M, nice to meet you! Oh I've played M&M6-8, but I think MM6 was still the best. I've tried Dragon Age too, but for some reason I got bored really quick.

I'll definitely keep the other titles you mentioned in mind though, thanks!

Older cRPGs to keep in mind: Fallout 1 and Planescape: Torment. If you can deal with the older engines and graphics, the storylines in these are awesome.

Torment was the last game made with the Infinity engine (Baldur's Gate & Icewind Dale sagas; D&D 2E), and IIRC, that engine was later adapted into what was used for Neverwinter Nights and KotOR.

If you're an adventure game fan, I'd suggest you give a look at Stacking. It's from Tim Schafer's company, one of the guys behin a lot of Lucasarts' adventure games, including Moneky Island 1 & 2. It's a nice adventure/puzzle solver with a game mechanic that's never been seen before.

I really love the game. It's clever puzzle-solving with a retro ambience. And the nesting dolls make for quite an interesting gameplay. After seeing me play for a few minutes, my girlfriend turned around and bought the game for herself too. Now me, my GF and our 9-yr-old daughter are addicted to the game.

Serious Sam HD is like Hard Reset, but better.

As for adventures, what about Sam & Max series? That's one of my favorites.

Just checked S&M out, kinda reminds me of Grim Fandango! Shall go take a look at some gameplay vids.
Edit: Quick question, why do the HD versions of Serious Sam have lower metascores than the originals?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Probably because they're the same as the originals, only in fancier graphics.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Because they changed nothing other than graphics. Trust me, they're better.

You are terribad if you die at sonic gen. :) I never played a sonic game before, and I found sonic gen a snore fest.

Gotta agree with you there, I do suck at it. Though if it were a snore fest for me I probably wouldn't enjoy it much either.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I meant it was a snore fest cause it was too easy. Theres a gazillion challenge maps, but I don't think i've had to retry more then 5. Glad it was a gift and I didn't pay for it :)

Sonic Generations is definitely easy. The online leaderboards don't even work properly, either, so I lost interest in getting the fastest time. The game is still fun for Sonic fans, and I am glad I bought it on release day, but I wish it was cheaper or offered local coop and ghost racing.

Based on your description, I've decided to take Torchlight out of my wishlist, and now I have my eyes on the Oddworld series. Are the other 3 Oddworld titles worth getting as well? Are the storylines linked?

Yeah I've played Grim Fandango, still got the CD right here :D

I'm actually looking forward to Borderlands 2! It looks good.

Thanks for all that, was a big help.

You're likely to love Arkham City (it's Arkham Asylum, but bigger!)

While I agree with that in general...
Surgeon General's Warning: If you're not a near-rapist-level misogynist nor rendered completely numb by a lifetime of investigating violent sex crimes then you may find the constant overarching threats of sexual violence a little...cloying. Great game and currently loving the sheer scale of it (controls occasionally annoy, but that was true of AA too)....but apparently in Arkham City there are your super-intelligent criminal masterminds, e.g. Hugo Strange, Penguin, Joker, Two Face etc....who scheme and plot to take control of Gotham, a handful of political prisoners and about 500,000 rapists.

I get that it's a massive prison and I get that there are bound to be a few sexual deviants but really, you can't turn a freakin' corner without overhearing a criminal talking about what a pretty mouth Catwoman has, or how they'd love to have "some time alone" with a female hostage, or in one instance: threatening to rape a male political prisoner while the victim whimpers and tries to bargain his way out. In the latter situation, you can either keep on walking (I guess you could...I didn't try) or get down there, pull him off the guy and then watch as the political prisoner cowers on the floor and averts his gaze. Then you batclaw up-up-and-away and leave him with his tears. Uplifting it is not.

End rant. I second the indie game Limbo and put forward the Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom.

First 2 oddworld games are masterpieces.

third one I found really bland. 4th one is very good, but its not a platformer, its a console fps.

Definitely recomend the frist two and the fps one. Munch's odysee is just an insult to the series :(

Re JRPGs among Steam games: There's all of Carpe Fulgur's offerings, which are Recettear, Chantelise, and Fortune Summoners, all of which are action RPGs. There's also a game from the Ys series--the Oath of Felghana, in particular, which is also an action RPG. (I think.)

If you liked Diablo then you might like Torchlight.

You should get Mass Effect 1 and 2 quick. Amazon is having a bundle for ME 1 and ME 2 digital deluxe just for 12$. I got mine yesterday. ME 1 you can use Amazon Downlaod Service, ME 2 can be redeemed on Origin.

You should try Hitman: Contracts too (not on Steam though); it's the one I loved the most from the series. Gameplay-wise, it's more SA than BM, but it has its unique dark and mean little atmosphere that cannot be beaten. It's also not as "strict" as Silent Assassin.

If you loved Bioshock, Sysstem Shock 2 is a must for you. However, if Bioshock scared you, System Shock will freak you the fuck out. Sadly, it's not on Steam either though.

I'm a little surprised someone hasn't mentioned Oblivion or Skyrim.

Or Psychonaughts.

Or Knights of the Old Rebulic.

Or Portal/Portal 2.

Or STALKER.

Or Shatter.

Or Jedi Academy.

Tell me moar about Shatter and Jedi Academy? I already own/played the rest.

Ah, cool. I hadn't looked at your Steam profile, so I was just going off what was listed above.

Shatter is "retro-inspired brick-breaking game that merges familiar action with unique twists and a modern crafted production approach. Innovative controls, physics effects, power-ups, special attacks, and boss battles" and a real kickin soundtrack I might add. I recommend it.

Jedi Academy is actually the third in a line of games called Jedi Knight, but it's basically a Star Wars FPS with 3rd person lightsaber and force powers action. Slice through dudes like they're butter. It's good fun.

You liked DX:HR, so I'd recommend the Mass Effect series and The Witcher 2. Both are narrative-driven RPGs that dedicate quite a bit to establishing their environments. And Hitman: Blood Money is pretty cheap during sales (like $3 or something) so it's well worth picking up.

If you liked the Monkey Island series, I'd sincerely suggest acquiring Ben There, Dan That and it's Sequel Time Gentlemen Please!

Brilliant, brilliant humour, some grand puzzles, an adult twist that doesn't force the matter of being 'adult', and you can get the pair for £2.99 on steam.

P.S - Don't be put off by the graphics. They swiftly become charming.

Its for PS1, but was remade for the PSP. I personally prefer the PS1 make, but PSP has the WLAN multiplayer option.
