since i dont think steam forums is gonna help

why does my in-game go away after opening it for a little?

Every other game i can keep it open forever with no problems
cod4's in-game will stay up for 7 straight seconds than disappear and i have to restart/switch from SP or MP to get it to work again for 7 seconds... or it will stop working 7 seconds from when i open it even if i close it immediately after opening it. What do i do?

Windows 7 64 Bit and i definitely meet the minimum req's

Intel i5
Nvidia GTX 660TI
8GB Ram

validated, no extra help also tried compatibility mode windows xp and disable visual themes and the usual... no help
the in-game hardly works now, i have to hold shift tab for a long time for it to SOMETIMES pop up, and it often disappears quickly and it wont pop up at all just pressing shift tab, so has anyone experienced shift tab problems with this? and how did you fix?

If I remember correctly, COD4 and COD5 had problems with the Steam overlay as it believes it to be a hacking tool (Punkbuster...). I'm pretty sure they patched it but it could still persist.

My first idea would be to reinstall COD4. Is it the CD version or the steam version?

Hmmm, well I only have anecdotal evidence from the CD version so I'm not sure how much help I can be (also this is like a year ago evidence).

As far as I know, overlays and COD4 don't play well and tend to get you kicked from game.

All I can suggest is to 1) check file integrity

2) Reinstall if need be

3) don't use the overlay

3) is gonna make me really sad
2) seems pointless
1) done it multiple times...

i had nonsteam cod4 and it had no overlay problems but i wanted it on steam =/

theres no way of fixing this? i havent been kicked for using it, it just doesnt function properly at all: often closing and not allowing me to reopen it without extreme efforts

Well, this might be a steam version-specific problem if your (and my) non-steam version had no overlay problems.

I suggest getting a refund (if that's even possible) and just playing your non-steam version through steam.

Google isn't pointing to any answers so you might be on your own.

I think you might be right about that. Punkbuster is known to be extremely stupid.

i checked and it installs in the steamapps folder...

also just completely deleted all the punkbuster stuff (confirmed by cod4 telling me PB wasnt installed) and still had problems so its not PB's fault its cod4's fault

I dont remeber the folder is called Pb, but you can check

yeh i had a PB folder in my cod4, just put it there and it said it wasnt installed and updated (odd) but still same problem... like i said i believe its a cod4 problem =/

edit: completely deleted the PB folder and now it says that isnt a valid game path, so it cant be /PB
