So I'm looking to buy a solo board or card game.

Here's my current shortlist;
The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game
Mage Knight
Friday
Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of Ashardalon
Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game
Arkham Horror
Space Hulk: Death Angel - The Card Game
Pandemic
Return of the Heroes
Wait, this isn't a board game

Do you have any experience playing any of these? Any opinion would be most welcome, including additional games that I have not got on my shortlist currently. Bonus points if it can be played co-op as well as solo, but right now a solo game is what I seek.

I don't know many solo games tbh but Arkham Horror is very fun if you have some friends that enjoy Lovecraft' settings. It can also be played solo, but I think you should use 2-3 detectives at the same time to have a chance to win.

EDIT: just remember that Agricola is 1-5 players. check it out!

Not a solo game but Carcassonne is awesome! There is a solitaire mode you can play!

Only played Pandemic so far but that was kinda fun! Definately an interesting game!

Some other great boardgames: Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, Scotland Yard

i like "space hulk, death angel". of course its more fun with friends, but its also nice to try to kill all these aliens by yourself. and you can make it more difficult, playing it with less marines on the field, if it gets to easy (wont happen to soon ;) ). plus, its a very small box so you can take the game with you, travelling or smth.

mage knight is also a fun game. pandemic and arkham horror... okay, but not my favourites. havent played the other on your list. thanks for giveaway =)

Arkham Horror can be soloed, but I think that would be missing the point entirely.

From the list you gave us, I have only played "Arkham Horror" and "Pandemic". Both were super awesome, but I prefer Arkham. Love it. Play with few friends, and you won't be able to stop.

I also suggest you to try [url=http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1927/munchkin]Munchkin[/url]. It's the base version, but has a lot of extensions versions. You can have great time playing it :).

Moreover, you can try playing [url=http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/13/the-settlers-of-catan]The Settlers of Catan[/url]. I am not sure how to describe it, something like an economic game(?). It is really good, having fun with friends.

Enjoy!

P.S.
Does someone know why the bbcode won't work here?

I'd call Catan more Resource Management, but I'm nitpicking. I'd recommend Munchkin too, there are many solo variants you can find on forums.

Yeah, it is the better than 'economic games' indeed.

I'm a huge Catan fan already. Munchkin's been on my 'need to buy' list for a while too. I didn't realise Munchkibn has some solo variants, so I'll have to look in to that.

You should. It has a lot of versions to the game. I've once played with like 5-6 extensions at once, and it was pretty awesome.

I've always loved Friday. Great solo deck-building game. Both Mage Knight and Pandemic are way better suited to play with 3-4 people.

Mage Knight solo is actually pretty nice. There's a lot to think about every turn since the board and cards dictate the course of the game. There is some randomness involved (drawing cards) but not as much as in many other games, since you can always opt to use cards for different actions (weaker than their intended use).

Arkham Horror is pretty random but a lot of fun. Also fine solo, since player interaction is mostly about discussing what to do and trading items. Fights and travels to the Other Worlds are all done solo in any case. It's kind of role-playing lite, and every game gives you a new situation (a new story so to say).

I'd recommend Mage Knight for solo, but don't know the other games on your list.

Btw: Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game. THAT sounds really badass. Have to have a look at it...

I was just asking myself the same question the other day, and I happened to find this thread.

Most of these are well old and available on VASSAL to try out.

Lemme know if you feel like playing a game or two.

You could look at Zombicide. It can be played solo and coop (often the case for solo games). I've had more than a blast with this game already (so simple yet so deep). And with the two upcoming expansions, there'll be plenty more variety.

I've also recently heard of a single-player only card game named Friday. You might want to check it out, as it is cheap and seems interesting.
