For some reason earlier today my internet suddenly went to shit. I didn't think to run a speed test until a few hours later, when I saw that where I'm supposed to be hitting 18+mbps down, I was limping along at maybe .5 to 1mbps. Well that's shitty right? I waited another hour and checked and suddenly I was at 2mbps... Waited a little longer, 5mbps... Last check I was at 7mbps.

My up bandwidth remained consistent with what I'd normally get, however.

Anybody know what would cause it to drop like that and progressively get better? It's after hours and I can't call support, which I'll probably do tomorrow but in the mean time my curiosity is getting the best of me.

EDIT: As of a few hours ago my connection returned to its intended speed. Likely just a hiccup with the service. I'm more curious about the gradual return of bandwidth than anything.

Others using your connection?

I doubt it, but I'll look into it. I'm pretty sure the router is fairly secure though.

As fast as I can get here.

But I blow through my datacap in a day or two if I'm not careful. :P

I was a dialup user way beyond when it was viable. Once you get to high speed, going back is absolute hell. I feel your pain though.

I remember those days myself. Even downloaded a 1GB file on dial up. Lucky they offered torrent as well as direct download.

1gb on dialup? Are you insane? We were lucky to complete a 10mb file :\

It only took a month of constant downloading during the 4 hours a night I was allowed to go online.

We know you aren't. You are a whole four times faster than dial up.

The rest of us can use between two and four digits to say how much faster we are though.

Have you been downloading a lot? Sometimes ISP's throttle your connection when you download a certain amount during peak times, that or it could be your router, or maybe they are just having problems.
Try logging into your modem/router and changing the channel.

Haven't had any torrents running as of late and if my ISP practices throttling then I've never heard about it. I've had the service a few years and torrented like it was going out of style back in the day. These days I very rarely pirate. So I imagine I'd have heard about that a long time ago.

Background downloads ( Torrent or something ), Others using your connection as Delta stated ( Including an opened Wi-Fi ), Weather issues ( in Romania on several providers it's a common thing ), Providers directly screwing up your connections, their server has issues. In case of any of the last 3, contact your provider.

One time my download speeds were pretty messy aswell. Tech support asked me to unplug and replug the cables (i was like "WTF YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!??!?" at the time)...but, what it does is clean the contacts of the cables. Sometimes this can really alleviate the issues. It worked for me because my cables were covered in dust and the contacts didn't like that one bit. Went up from 1,3 Mbit/s to 14 Mbit/s again.

Since your upload seemed normal I would say it was a problem from the side of the ISP, had the exact same thing happen to me a few days ago, turns out their local router server was spazzing out.
