Hey guys.
I recently tried Beat hazard and I love a game where my own music is the base of the game so I would like to know if you know other games where the music "powers" the game itself
Thanks :)

can I play my own music? The music from my library?

1 decade ago

Nope, all music from the game, which is great by the way.

That game doesn't let you use your own music.

DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) for PC.. Its quite old now but its similar to Audiosurf gameplay.. U can choose your own song too..

And use Dance pad to play it. :-)

DDR is available for several platforms, including PS2 and GameCube.

Also, there's the freeware version Stepmania for PC, which just requires you to find stepfile packs yourself.

does really big sky use your music library?

Nope, it has a fun music but isn't exactly music driven.

Beat Hazard, though it could cause blindness, seizures, etc. especially if you play it in a dark room @_@

Have you ever gone outside to see what it looks like from your room at night?

1 decade ago
Permalink

I cut the visual effects to 50% and had no problems after that.

Lol, I always play it with 200% visuals and mostly in a dark room... no problems yet^^

Beat Hazard, Audiosurf, Sequence, Frets on Fire (use a Rock Band 2 theme and it's more or less Rock Band 2) and I guess the Bit Trip games?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

the bit trip games allow you to use your music library?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, but they are very music driven. In RUNNER the powerups improve the music and make it more complicated. When you dodge obstacles, it makes a note that fits in with the music.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, but Bit Trip Runner for example is working like this.

Starts with a basic beat, you run, get through obstacles, and pick up bonus multipliers, that kicks in an additional layer to the music, and sounding more awesome because of that.

Also, the music is built around the levels, and the levels around the music, they are perfectly in sync, it's great stuff.

if you want the path of no return (and have a standalone keyboard/numpad) you can try getting the Pump it up games for the PC; Pump it up the prex 3 is probably the most famous, Exceed is another version that's fun too :)

Audiosurf gets my vote too. Pretty much every time I get a new song, I get the urge to see what it's like in Audiosurf. It has multiple game modes, some of which are great for relaxing with at the end of a busy day.

edit: Don't see anyone mentioning Turba. Never played it myself, so I can't say if it's any good, but you could look into that as well.

It is fun, but a bit glitchy and menus could be better and stuff.

I tried most of them and Beat Hazard is the best, did you get the Ultra addon?
Rhythm Zone is more or less a bad Guitar Hero knockoff, I got tired of it very quickly
I don't get the idea behind Audiosurf, but people were praising it few years ago, probably because it was one of the first music driven games
Sequence is allright but it has it's own music so it looses a big part of potential, music is electro by the way
Bit Trip Bit and Runner are AWESOME! Especially Bit, but again, not driven by your own music, I'd say grab when it goes on sale (it's bound to go)
I have a suspicion there's gonna be another "indie music bundle" on sale this summer, it wouldn't be the first time ;)

I recommend everything that begins with BIT.TRIP. I highly recommend Beat as it's one of my favourites, but it you have a Wii or 3DS then go for the complete pack, as it has BIT.TRIP VOID, and that one is simply brilliant.

The Polynomial seems like a stylish music-driven game too, it looks like Flywrench in 3D and with shooting, so that's a definite win for me. Audiosurf, I found it meh.

And one that I didn't like but you may end up liking more is Break Blocks. I don't want to complain too much about it as I've got it for free from a developer giveaway on Desura, but it's just way too hard for me, and even after completing the tutorial twice I just don't get what's the point of the game.

Audiosurf is the most enjoyable for me; it isn't a rhythm game, but it's music driven in its own way, and really nice. It's one of the best in terms of balancing "playing" vs "chilling out with music".

Sequence is also very well made mix of rhythm & puzzle game; unfortunately, given how it works, it is bound to its own soundtrack only, nevertheless is worth every penny (and cheap to boot)

Audiosurf
Sequence
Auditorium
Turba
Polynomial
Bit trip runner (Bit trip beat I guess also)

P.S.: Not all of these have your music, most have their own.

On Xbox live there is a game called "Groov" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TA1v1ldwlGA). If that game ever gets release for PC, I'll buy it.
