I just won a copy of Borderlands from the latest Humble Bundle but the giveaway was labeled as Borderlands GOTY. I don't really care for the one dlc that's missing from the GOTY version but it seems kinda wrong for the giveaway creator to get full CV for a game they bought for way less.

What to do now?

Follow the rules of steamgifts I guess. Contact the give away creator and let them know that the item they gave you was not what they made a give away for if they don't then sort it out you will have to mark as not received.

Well, be careful as if someone checks your profile later and sees you marked it as recievend and you are missing one of the dlcs from the goty, they might think you regifted it or something, so ask the person to give you the other key too if he has it, so its the goty, or contact support/mark as not recieved after 7 days.

The DLCs are on the same tier, so you can talk to him and he should be able to provide them, as he chose the GOTY instead of 'vanilla', so it's the GOTY content he must provide to the winner.

They are not, one DLC is in BTA tier

Hm, my bad, didn't noticed that on HB's site... Well, so the only missing Claptrap's DLC, but I believe the second tier is bundled at one key as well, right?! :S

I think it's 2 key for the BTA tier (one for what was available from the start and a 2nd one for the content that was added yesterday). So the key with the missing DLC also activates 4 Headhunters DLCs, but the rest of this tier in on the other key.

Thankfully no, Claptrap and the Headhunters DLC are bundled together in a third key ($1 tier and BTA week 1 are the first two keys)

You should ask them to create a ticket to change the giveaway from Borderlands GOTY to Borderlands. If they refuse, mark not received (unless they would gift you the missing DLC of course)

But what if I don't want the vanilla version, I have entered the goty version since I do not care for the base game alone?

Well there isn't much more you can do... try to convince them to get you the missing DLC, and if you can't, you'll just have to get it yourself later or live with a missing DLC

I could be misunderstanding you, but you sound sort of ungrateful. I can understand why you would want GOTY, I mean that is what you entered, but because what you got is missing ONE DLC you don't want it at all?

You do realize, the giver probably just made a mistake, right? If I were him, I would just ask Support to re-label my giveaway and call it a day. It's too bad you already activated it, because he probably would have wanted to re-roll (I know I would, if I read what you said).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

And how was he supposed to know if wasn't the GOTY edition without activating it ?
I can understand that OP is annoyed since now he can't enter giveaways for the GOTY anymore since most people would reroll him, and buying that missing DLC would cost like half the price of the GOTY edition

Permalink

Most people aren't going to re-roll him. It's Borderlands 2 we are talking about. But I can understand not wanting to buy the missing DLC.

Actually it's Borderlands the 1st.

No, it's Borderlands 1. I don't understand what would be the diference if it was Borderlands 2 anyway, he would still get rerolled on a GOTY giveaway for having all the DLCs but one

Comment has been collapsed.

Even better. How many people are that particular when giving away Borderlands 1 GOTY? This isn't Skyrim - Legendary Edition or some other major edition where gifters are sticklers about who owns what DLC. I always thought re-roll was up to gifter, and he had to state that on his notes (and get approval from support) first. I could be wrong though.

EDIT: And what are the chances of winning Borderlands 1 GOTY edition again? I understand why people don't want to enter these giveaways because it is missing one DLC (I suppose) but its not like people are ever going to get a better chance at winning Borderlands 1 with almost all its DLC than right now. Not saying to let this slide, but saying you probably don't want it at all because it is missing a dlc is weird to me. But whatever. People are different.

Reroll is up to the gifter. No need to say anything in the decription, no need to check things with support, if you give away a package and the winner has anything from the package, you can get a reroll, no matter how many items from the pack the winner has.
I'm pretty sure that for the GOTY of any game, if the winner already has the base game and most of the DLCs, it's almost guaranteed than the creator will ask for a reroll. (you mentioned Skyrim Legendary, it's actually one of the games where the gifter often doesn't care about the winner having the base game, because of the price of the DLCs)

Yea, you are right.

Under Guidelines, "Try to refrain from entering giveaways for packs if you already own the majority of the games contained within. The giveaway creator may request a new winner if you own a high percentage of the packaged games."

I still think the chances of someone winning it again are low though, so OP probably wouldn't even get past entering. That's because I don't see Borderlands GOTY edition getting bundled any time soon. Humble Bundle was the best bet to probably get Borderlands and the few DLC's for cheap.

I just used it as an example since changing the giveaway after a giveaway ends sounds kinda lame.

Permalink

Pretty much almost all giveaway for Borderlands GOTY had commentary from people telling that if it was an humble bundle link, it was not GOTY and thus the creator of the giveway should change it to borderland normal or give Claptrap DLC. I haven't seen any of the borderlands GOTY giveaway recently not having people advertasing the giveway creator, because the error is so frequent.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

your problem is precisely why i didn't entered any of the borderlands GOTY recently, knowing i would only get an almost goty but missing one DLC, and still prefer to get a full GOTY.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's why I entered the ones that were called Borderlands Goty and not he basic Borderlands giveaways.

Permalink

i was meaning the GOTY giveway too. Almost everyone i've checked were an humble one. didn't take any risk by entering those

Permalink

I never understood why support would go along with changing the title. This is not right for all those that entered, including the OP as he says.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I can't say exactly how it works, but I think they might only do it if the winner agrees. Sometimes genuine mistakes happen, so it's good to have that option (for example I remember not long ago a bundled game had the same name than another game and a lot of people chose the wrong one when creating a giveaway, so these giveaways had to be changed or the winners could not mark these received without risking a suspension)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I understand that its only if the winner agrees, but they never get the permission of the other entrants. They spent spent their points on a chance for X game, but suddenly it gets changed? True, the points are free but it does limit them from entering the giveaways they want. Also, what about all those people that create the wrong giveaway (maybe clicked the wrong group or time) and request it be deleted, they lose a slot while these others get a pass. In this particular case I bet the host knew that he was doing something wrong and hoping it would slide, as I said in my other post, many others marked the Humble Bundle as GOTY and got called out on it in the comments.

Maybe he miss labeled by mistake and you got the game and 3 of 4 DLCs, it will be half truth if you mark it as not received, also

Many people mislabeled the game as GOTY, and in most cases it was discussed in the comments that if it was the humble bundle then it would be missing a DLC that the creator would have to give as well.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I get that part, but marking it as "not received" when you actually got 1 game plus 3 DLC feels kinda wrong

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ya, but marking it as received and then getting suspended for it is even worse, especially if the creator knew what they was doing.

Permalink

Its a guess (cause I didn't won or bought Borderlands GOTY) but if I'm right and it's the same as Saints Row 4 GOTC Edition, you'll get the base one in your library and the DLC apart, I there is no way to see wich DLC someone has (does it?), So there is no way to tell.

Well, its my humble opinion about it, if I were OP, I would feel kinda ungratefull getting the GA creator a suspension after he gave me a game :/

EDIT: It seems in the gamelist you can see which DLC they have (At least with borderlands) but I dont know, hahahah it feels like "Thanks for the game but I will report you"

Permalink

No one mentioned reporting. Getting a giveaway marked not received doesn't get you suspended. OP on the other hand would get suspended for marking it received.

In some cases you can see the DLCs, not sure about this game. But on the Humble Bundle page it lists the base game and a few DLCs, that would indicate to me that its the game and a few DLCs and not the GOTY edition as it would have said GOTY. The creator should, and probably did, know it was wrong.
Assuming the DLCs dont show, if he simply marks it as received he can't try to win the missing DLC without the risk of someone calling him out on trying to win it twice and get suspended. Though that can be resolved if support changes the game won.
As for you last point, how would you feel if you won a copy of Grand Theft Auto V but got Bad Rats instead? You did receive a game as you said... Sure, a little more extreme as in this case its almost the same game but it still isn't complete. Perhaps he heard great things for the missing DLC, I heard its one of the better ones. He may have had hopes for playing with friends. Right now he'd have to spend $10 to get the missing content. I would feel bad for the creator, but I'd also feel bad for all those entering on false pretenses. And if the creator knew he was doing wrong, as I suspect, then he should be made to pay as he tried to cheat the system.

Edit: Sorry if I seem harsh on the creator, but I am confident it was no mistake on the creator's part. The game was not listed as GOTY in the bundle and as roly pointed out, most GOTY giveaways had at least 1 comment about the bundle lacking a DLC.

No it wouldn't, since he did not receive the GOTY edition, and that is what was given away. It's the creator's responsabilty to sort this out, not the winner's.

Not 100% sure, but if it turns out that this was a mistake, support can change the giveaway to the correct game (BL1, as this is the closes for the GOTY-but-one version) - maybe easier to approach the GA creator if the GA can stay, and he don't need to spend more money (and won't break rules) :)

Borderlands GOTY won't give full CV either because it is in the bundled list just like almost every other game (check it out). As some said already: read the FAQ, do not mark as received yet, contact them asking if they can give you the missing DLC (it got added to the BTA), they have a week to send the correct game before you must mark it as not-received.

On the other hand, it's neither a "vanilla" version as it has three DLC's. Did the GA creator gave a description or made a comment that they were offering the HB Tier1 version?

Take what you get and be happy. Is much easier for your nerves :) You can get Claptrap DLC later for cheap money in a sale.
And to all who cry out for the rules...:
You never broke any rules in your life? You payed all the taxes you should? You have never driven too fast or drunken?
Smoked weed? Or whatever... :D
Think about it! :)
BUT if you see the same guy doing it again and again....The he does it deliberately and then I would report him.

i'm realy sure (even without knowing the creator) that he didn't even knew, that there is missing one dlc. it is not, that the op just get the base game...

but it is just my 2 cents. like i said, i know that there are rules and that they have to be here but sometimes some people just focus to hard on the rules... i mean, we are still on a page for giveaways and it should not be just for the CV but for the fun.

  1. the dlc in tier 2 was added on monday. i think the giveaway started before this.

  2. bundlestars sold 4 example a sainds row bundle that was in reality the goty but they wrote all the dlc.

  3. benefit of the doubt.

But like i said, it is just my 2 cent and I beg to differ.
