Hi,
I like classic point-and-click adventures like Monkey Island and Sierra games. I also like detective and mystery novels/films. So, I have found this bundle in the Steam sale, but I'm not sure if it's good enough.

I don't know the games or the character. Can anyone tell me something about them? Thanks!

This might be interesting for quite a few people... You should probably mention it in the deals thread. I've seen multiple people complain that the Nance Drew games never go on decent sales.

I'm not really familiar with the books but I think it's ~ teenage girl detective. So probably a less charming (and older) version of Veronica Mars :D

Nancy Drew is a teen sleuth written as a counterpart to the Hardy Boys.

It was originally a book series (starting in 1930...), but it seems there's been many new series and revisions since it's inception. I only ever read the ones from the 80's. :)

Don't know much about the games though. :/

I've played a couple of them, a long time ago now. Ones like the White Wolf will seem quite dated by now, I'd imagine. However, I still liked them. Since the sale's on for a while yet, why not pick one to try and see at the end if you fancy the others? I think I might go for it, personally, it will be good to be able to ditch the actual boxes.

Nancy Drew is a female high school student (graduated, i think) detective.

The character and story taken from books (? CMIIW).
List of the books/novels here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nancy_Drew_books
Games are made by Her Interactive,
list of the games here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nancy_Drew_video_games
The title also adapted as a film in 2007
btw I've read 1 of the novel, play the games, and watch the movie

For the game, some of them are pretty old, i was played some of the old ones and love it (at that time)
Good games for me, combination of P&C and Puzzle with mysterious story.
Kind of my game.

Just look at the sheer number of these games. Yep, it's conveyer production at its worst. I admit, last time I gave this series a chance was more than 10 years ago, but I somehow doubt its quality has changed. The writing is traditionally terrible, characters are shallow at best, and I wouldn't dare call detective stories intriguing; as for the main character, she is just plain irritating. Although the original books were written for teenage girls (obviously, games were as well), I couldn't get into PC series even when I was a teenage girl myself (being a fan of classic adventure games didn't help at all). The only impressive thing here is the speed of production, Her Interactive somehow managed to release 32 games in just 19 years.

The only impressive thing here is the speed of production
Her Interactive somehow managed to release 32 games in just 19 years.

2 a year, each year, between 98 and 2015, with the exceptions of 98, 99, 2000, & 2015 (which all had 1 release) and 2008, 2009, and 2010 (which had 3).
That's 35 games across 18 years of production (1.94/y average) and across 20 years since initial release (1.75/y average).

Just figured you'd appreciate that the actual numbers are more impressive than you thought. :P

As far as the quality, Big Fish Games user reviews (which are at around 20 - 30 per game, compared to the 3 or 4 reviews for each game on Steam) are mostly reporting between 3.5 and 4.0 (out of 5) for earlier games, but a pretty steady 3.5 for later ones. (Though, given the size of the list, I only checked a portion of them.) [Of note, the games listed by thom and TrilledMeow below seem to be the most appreciable, coming in between 4 and 4.5.] So no, it doesn't seem like the quality has reliably changed any- well, not for the better, at least.

What I do know is, I've come across each of the 35 games before, and not a one has interested me enough to want to play them. Frankly, they all seem to be budget HOGs with worse artwork, and even my appreciation for mystery games can't beat that out (especially not when we have the Sherlock Holmes games as an alternative option).
I figure (as someone who has never played them), if you're both a big enough Nancy Drew fan and a hardcore enough HOG enthusiast, they'll have their appeal, but they're not much for recommending to anyone else.

Hmm...

I had a lot of fun playing the Nancy Drew games with my niece ages ago, so when they appeared on Steam a while back I couldn't resist getting them again. :)

So I'd say if you have a young relative to play the games with, definitely, go for it! But for an adult, with no nostalgia for the character, playing them solo, most likely you'd get bored. Especially for a fan of classic Sierra or LucasArts adventures, there's just not enough "game" in these games to challenge you. But at that price, maybe you will buy them anyway... :)

Some are better than others. I would play one first before buying the whole pack. Secret of the Old Clock, Legend of the Crystal Skull, and Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon are all really good. Play one and then you can think about whether you'd still like a game like that but not as good.

Also, what fiftykyu said (above).

They are more challenging than HOG games but fun to solve... require a lot of thinking.

I enjoy most of the Nancy Drew games a lot, but I also read the books when I was a kid. I'm not sure if you will like them as much if you don't have some familiarity. The settings and mysteries are probably enough to keep most people who like adventure games interested. I haven't played all of them, but Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake, Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon, Curse of Blackmoor Manor, and the White Wolf of Icicle Creek are ones I remember fondly. But some of my favorites are missing from this pack, like the Secret of Shadow Ranch and Treasure in the Royal Tower.

For me, this would be a good deal so I could get the majority of the games in the pack, and then buy the other ones alone later. For you, it might be better to read the descriptions of some of the games and pick one that seems like it has a story or setting you're interested in and try that first.
