If they want to have sex, then yes. In most western countries the age of consent is sixteen. If one of the people is over 18 and the other is under the age of consent, the younger cannot legally agree to have sex, and the whole thing is treated as something called "statutory rape". Look it up.

Age difference shouldn't matter. Although, if one is over 18, then the age difference should be over that age and not younger than 18. I say that because in my state legal age is 18, but you have to be careful because if it is known that one of you is under that age, it's automatically assumed that you are having sex. So you have to tread lightly even if you aren't having sex. Sad truth, especially since in the old days people were getting married at 13 or 14 and considered "old maids" if still single at 16. Although, my sister's father did try sending her to mexico to get married when she was 13, but that didn't work out.

I'd recommend for the guy to think it through.

If Bro number one says yes, but then is asked by a chick in a bikini if he wants to be her partner, is the Bro allowed to ask the second Bro if it's okay to change partners? Because I did this... Ended up going back because she found someone else after I said yes...

While I respect your right to your opinion, I totally disagree with it. If two people are old enough and mature enough to understand and accept what all is involved in a marriage, then they should be allowed to marry with the consent of their parents. Age shouldn't even be a factor.

Of course, when it comes to maturity and understanding what all is involved in marriage, many people fail to qualify....

At that age, I say it is bad. If we would be talking about 25 year old man and a 20 year old woman, then it would be fine. But a girl with age of 16 is still just a kid.

I would think of the guy being pathetic and trying to get a thing going on with a naive little girl. It would be more using her, rather than a serious relationship.

While I understand where you are coming from, this is a generalization. I have known a few 16-year-olds with emotional and mental maturity far greater than many of the people I went to college with.

That said, in almost every case someone at 16 is NOT mature enough for a serious relationship, especially with someone much older.

the age difference does not matter but the fact that she might be only 16-17 would be a problem to some people. It's certainly not a concern of mine but PDA or even sexual intercourse might get you in a lot a trouble depending on where you are living right now and the legal system there.

There's an even larger age difference between me and my boyfriend and that doesn't bother anyone I know, the problem is more with how young she is. At least in the country I live in. If you were both in your 20's then 4 years wouldn't even be looked at as odd. But since she's just a young teen the whole thing is literally seen as a form of rape.

There's a big difference between a 4 year old and a 9 year old, and there's a big difference between a 14 year old and a 19 year old. Not so much a 24 and a 29 year old though. Those early years involve a lot of rapid maturation and can be a little crazy. ::shrugs:: good luck to your hypothetical friend.

Comment has been collapsed.

Nobody is mature at 16 because it is physiologically impossible. Your brain is developing well into your early 20's, and I have met alot of people I considered 'mature' when we were both younger, but those same people will be drastically different at 24 or 25.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You are changing throught your entire life. Heck even a 40 year old can be mentally immature. I can't see your point...for instance there is a girl who you would consider mature, but you wouldn't date her, because she will be even more mature(or not) 5 years later? This is absurd.
A person's maturity level isn't exact science, it is determined by experiences.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You're right about how anybody can be immature at any age, but it is all relative. For example that immature 40 year old most likely came a long way since he was 16.
And maybe maturity isn't exact, but it is largely rooted in science, and experiences affect people differently based on age.

I prefer to date people close to my maturity level so I can actually have meaningful conversation with them. It's not absurd at all. I have never met a 16 or even an 18 year old who shares my maturity level, so it could never be fulfilling to date someone of that age. If you can't understand that, I hope you do when you get older.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I know what you mean, as I matter of fact I have met several 16 year old girls who share my maturity level(maybe I am immature, it's not up to me to decide).
Also that last sentence was unnecessarily offensive.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The mature level of someone is subjective, it depends on how mature you are. If you find little school girls 'hot', then you clearly aren't mature enough for a serious thing.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

what's wrong with you people? I only said that 16 year old girls CAN BE mature. And you assumed I'm some kind of sick fuck. Real classy.
Also if I were to date a 16 year old girl(Im 19 by the way) what's wrong with that?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The guy who said "Nobody is mature at 16 because it is physiologically impossible. Your brain is developing well into your early 20's" is a starting point. There is also the matter of experience. Going through puberty, you fuck up a lot. You make bad decisions. It's how you learn how not to fuck up and act as an adult.

In summary "What's wrong with that?" is that it makes you sound like the kind of sick fuck you are outraged at being portrayed as. It's not like I know you or have any reason to say this except.. That's what you sound like, dude.

Comment has been collapsed.

It's legal but I think that dating someone who is 18 would be more appropriate.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Honestly? My opinion of them would begin relatively low.

There's an enormous discrepency between maturity levels of the average person at 15-16 and 19-20. This hypothetical couple would be composed of two people at very different stages in their lives. One is finally stepping into their own light (out of the shadow of their parents) and the other is trying to find their place in an adult world. A 4-5 year age difference doesn't seem like much, but for a 16-year old someone who is 4 years old has 25% more life experience. The difference is significant, except in the extremely rare instances of an extremely mature 16-year-old.

Additionally, in most states in the US (I am uncertain about internationally) it is illegal for someone who is 15-16 to be in a relationship (at least, a sexual relationship) with someone who is over 18. Other states have very specific exceptions.

Finally, if the 16-year-old girl does what so many women do these days and either sends self-taken nudes to her boyfriend or allows him to take such photos, they are both likely running afoul of child pornography laws.

Thus, in almost every case, I would urge against any such relationship. So what I would think of the older person in that relationship is that they're taking some serious risks, and that the relationship is unlikely to be equal.
