So, I've enjoyed playing games since my early days of childhood. At 2 years old I was put at a computer to smash keys on the keyboard, and transitioned into coordination and games. Needless to say, I've always been one to enjoy gaming. Lately, I've been asking myself if I'm really a gamer in the sense, or if I'm more of a game collector. While I play a game here and there, I just looked at my Steam and GOG libraries as it's easy to see how many titles you have and how many have been played. I'm a bit shocked at the results...

  • Played: 46 games
  • Library: 1008 games
  • Over 95% unplayed

This is just my digital libraries of Steam and GOG. I have hundreds more PSN titles, PS1/2/3, Xbox, GameCube, etc. games I've never played either.

So, are you a gamer or a game collector? (Yes, it is possible to be both.)

Used to be just a gamer, but now thanks to bundles I have also become a collector.
I know the feeling of buying stuff you want and then finding out that you have forgot to actually play it, but I will eventually play all my games.

Both. I want all the good games that entertain me and ... i am into leveling up stuff sssooo... yeah... i am not comfortable by collecting crap, just saying, but unfortunatly i still collect them... but ofcourse i avoid some ''games'' like death itself. About ..111 games is what i own. Most ive played, or about half atleast. Ive played a giant dozen of games outside steam. Mostly into F2P games since i can never buy any myself, and with so, i play them long and long. My biggest love right now is for Infinity Wars, Heroes of Newerth, i wanna get into Hazard Ops, and etc. Cant play any games though, not without a computer.. which has been going on for more than a year now... it hurts to not play...

Both. I'm collecting games that I want have in my own game collection, but there will be only games I'm playing. Sure, I got plenty of games which just laying down on my steam account and I have no time to play, but sooner or later I'll beat them. :-)

I'm not collecting any useless games, I'm not buying every bundle that exist. Now I got most of games from my wishlist and it's enough for me. If there will be something interesting and new - why not, but for now I'm not buying anything anymore. My steam wishlist is like "meh, I'll buy it only at -75% sale". ;-)

Well, that fancy site says:

Games owned: 97

Games not played: 34 (35%)

But 15 of unplayed were for free and 5 other are unplayable by definition(soundtrack/DLC etc.) so in fact it's more like "games I paid for and haven't played yet: 14 (18%)"

Which makes me a... I would call myself a "fan of games".

Gamer, Games owned 258
Games not played 80 (31%)

BTW It's a bad prediction, that people, who have 95% of their library unplayed are collectors only. What if I like a game so much, that I spend al my time with it? I have 209 hours in CoD MW 2 Multi, 149 hours in Borderlands 2, 87 hours in MW 3 Multi. I'm a gamer, since I play them. I may have a lot of games, which I haven't played, but I always play something :)

I agree. Even though I have close to 96% of my digital library unplayed, I have played and/or beaten many of them on other consoles. The main reason so many remain unplayed is due to lack of time. When I do get time, I rather enjoy playing games. Also, I play games through to completion. I can sink hours into one game, but due to aforementioned lack of time it can take months to log 10-12 hours. In other words, even though I have a tremendous backlog, I still consider myself both a gamer and a collector. :D

I guess I'm more of a game collector. According to steamdb.info, I've got 1080 games owned (but Steam profile says 994) and about 75% are unplayed. While I do try to buy games I think I'll enjoy and want to play, bundles happened. :) When I found out that I could get a bunch of games for a pretty low cost, I start buying more of them. I don't buy every bundle I see -- I still try to stick to bundles with games I want to play and don't already own most of. But it's definitely led to more games that I would have gotten if I had to buy them individually. Why I haven't played more is mostly time (work takes up a good chunk of my time) and competing interests (gaming isn't the only thing I want to do in my free time). The time constraint in particular makes me lean towards more casual games, or ones that are fairly easy to pick up and put down at will. The ones with longer stories to follow can be hard for me to get into just because I can't devote enough time to them frequently enough to really get into the stories. So I say I'm a casual gamer, playing when I have some time, but in practice I probably lean towards the collector side because bundle purchases give me so many extra games.

To be fair, the number should be higher seeing as I leave some games to run for card drops. That's only for steam...but...steam is where I play most so I'm not going to include my consoles.

I'm a gamer, though I tend to only play one game obnoxiously and have occasional side games. (I'm a one-game kind of gal?) This has been the case a few times in the past with consoles too...take a look:

Natural Selection 2 - 585.2 hours

Magic 2014 - 407.4 hours

Terraria- 337.7 hours

then it literally drops to 36 hours and under for the rest of the games...lol.

Both. Im a game collector because im a mad gamer. Only thing is i don't have enought time to play them all- nor the patience to play any single game for too many hours/days. Thus my ever increasing backlog.

For example today im sick and took the day off. I think ive played 10+ different games today(some for the first time). At this pace i will finish 1-2 games this year(at best), +bundles +steam sales my lybrary will increase some dozens more.

I hate collecting anything, i mean, i never got a taste to this hoarding/collecting thing. But regarding games(and music, movies and books) i have a strange urge for the new and different, i simply wanna play/test everything out there.

I'm both, but lately I'm starting to fall under the game collector title more. I've played around half my games, but with my time getting more filled, I'm buying more games than I can play at this point. I just want to play so many games, but don't have nearly enough time to do so.

I am the game collector in the same sense Buffalo Bill was a ladies man. Games come to my library to die, abandoned and forgotten.

Game collector here, as well. (Sadly, there's not enough free time for all my hobbies...)
But I find that Steam is like a game itself, or a meta-game, if you like, with the end-goal to collect as many games as possible*; plus the badges, the Steam market, the summer/winter sales.

*Preferably free or very cheap. Paying money somehow feels like cheating, if that makes any sense... Although probably Steam would disagree. :D
