1saleaday just so happens to be having a 24 hour laptop sale in their flash deals section. Can't speak for any of the laptops there, and I'm a little too tired to check specs, but you could take a look at those.

Best bang for the buck is building your own desktop though.

edit: And yes, I've ordered some smaller items from them. Shipping is slow, but they're real.

I am using HP, for about 3 years now. It comes as a package deal which was pretty good. My first pc was a custom which lasted 6 years but plenty of problems near the end. Both cost about the same really if you take into account inflation etc. I think the HP package deal for desktops are pretty decent. Those mid level prices, not the high end or the low end budget type.
For laptops, Asus has been great thus far. Low budget, nice on the eyes and it supports most of whatever.
