I'm debating which of these two I should play. Is it necessary to play the first first? I am a sucker for two ended light sabers, can you get one in either game? Any input is appreciated :)

PS I already own both so price of obtaining them doesn't need to be considered

If they are as good as people say, it should be 30+ hours on a game hopefully and as a kid in college I sadly don't have the time to play both at the moment

http://howlongtobeat.com/ says that their main stories are 29 and 31 hours long, respectively. Completionist runs are 43,5 and 49,5 hours long. (:

second game has a better crafting system and better story, but it's just pain because of bugs and cut content. So it's pretty hard to choose.

Play the first. It takes less time and less work with settings, files etc.

The cut content is a cinch to pick up thanks to the update.

Why would you consider playing a sequel to a plot-heavy game first when both installments have practically the same mechanics and you already own both? :V

To answer your last question, you can use two-bladed lightsabers in both games.

Some times the sequel has a better mechanic or a fixed bug or something that isn't easily found in the reviews

Like I said, there are very few differences in mechanics, so don't worry about that.
Play 1 first, at least to understand references to it in 2.

You're thinking first-person-shooters or action games or hack and slash, or any other genre that is typically based on mechanical and graphical updates alone.

For things like RPGs [that are part of a series], the main reason to play a subsequent game is to continue a story.

Rather, think of the games as being similar to episodic content, or better yet, as novels in a book series.

You could jump in later- and perhaps the author's writing style has improved, and the illustrations or formatting has improved some, but the core mechanics and presentation are likely going to be very similar, and you'll likely have no idea what's going on for several parts of the game, due to not having experienced the relevant story information.

More crucially, later games tend to spoil the plot of earlier ones in a series, so much like with action games, once you play a later one, you tend to not have near as much inclination to play earlier games in the series.

so the question is:
Do you want to give up on playing KOTOR1 entirely to get a less-than-ideal, somewhat confusing play of KOTOR2, or do you want to just enjoy a fully-formed game?
No need to worry about if/when you'll play KOTOR2, since you'll still be getting the full experience of KOTOR1 either way, rather than deteriorating the experience of both games by playing them out of order.

I chose to start with the first one. I heard playing KOTOR II first means that some plot points will go over your head.

First one is definitely the way you'd want to go. As others have said, this is a plot-heavy series, and if you played the second one first, it wouldn't be as good. Plus, a good bit of content did get cut from the second game (which people have actually made Mods for, so you CAN complete - albeit fan-made - some side stories to a degree). Most likely for nostalgic reasons, the first is my favorite.
As wolfpup up there suggested, KOTOR this semester, KOTOR II the next.

tl;dr Go for the first one.

If you end up playing KotOR II make sure to pick up this workshop item https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=485537937 (in your language of course), personally I would start with the first one, since you can import your data to the second game.

Play KOTOR1 firstly and KOTOR 2 later. otherwise you will miss references from first game. Like 2 of your companions from 1st game are really important figures in the sequel (one will be your companion once more, one is very important soldier of the Republic). You will find certain droid in 2nd part which will be far less awesome if you haven't played in 1st part firstly (due to its character development in 1st part). And so on.

Both games has got different protagonists tho protagonist from 1st part (indirectly) plays huge role in sequel (in the way of they past explaining recent galaxy situation) AND is a huge part of 2nd game protagonist past.

I like story of 2nd game better (but 1st game has got big plot twist at the end) - mostly because interactions between companions are more complex. Game mechanic is similar in both games, but 2nd part has got better crafting system.

And I'd recommend using graphic mods from nexus or other site - game is really old and graphic can look "meh". Plus as other said above me - TSL:RCM is must-have for KOTOR2.

Are there any specific graphic mods that you'd recommend?

There are tons of mods, and they change pretty much every texture you can find :D

Few months back I made forum post about modding KOTOR 1 & 2. They should still be ok KOTOR1 KOTOR2.

Just download everything from 3. Mody graficzne and copy into Override folder (it's in main game folder) in given order (it's important - some mods can override others, so if you'd put files in override folder in random order some textures can not work properly). DON'T install any kind of graphic mod from steamworkshop - it's ok to download TSL:RCM from there, but it will fail miserably when trying to add better textures via this way (it installs them in steamworkshop folder and not in override one - and this lead to game not knowing which stuff it should use and crashes.

You can skip "Bielizna" and "Droidy HK-50 wzorowane na droidach LOKI z ME" - I added it due to my Mass Effect obsession xD

If you don't want to look for other / newer mods on nexus / deadly stream you can use it as a base - the collection in my forum posts will give KOTOR 1 and 2 new textures of planets, lightsabers, vibroswords, weapons in general, robes, better particle effect and so on.

Sadly mods authors haven't made any kind of one-big total mod, so everything has to be downloaded and installed individually.

Sorry to resurrect this, but do you happen to know anything that help with smoke/fog issues in Kotor 2? Everything I found on the internet ("Disable Vertex Buffer Objects", change affinity) didn't help at all :S Even the starting menu is laggy ><

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm sorry, but I have never encountered bug like this (even though I played this game on more than 5 different RIGs), so I can't try to reproduce it myself to find working solution.

The only thing that comes to my mind is to set graphic quality to minimum or disabling movies (last time I played into KOTOR2 I managed to get smoothly to last planet and game started to crash from there on every loading screen. Deletting movie folder "fixed" this bug, whatever was causing it).

I'm not getting crashes though. It's the lag each time I meet fog or smoke. I could set the graphics to lowest, but it would be kinda a shame, since it works fine everywhere else. :S

I'm sure that smoke is visible constantly only in few locations - main menu, during Peragus sequence and on Nar Shaddaa (few rooms full of smoke and refugee sector). Rest of the game is smoke-free (worse if this lag is caused also by grenade smoke, but I'm not using them either way).

So if you're on Peragus in this smoke-rich area and that is causing so much trouble you can lower graphic settings and chech if game runs better that way. And after moving further (I won't write what is happening next, because I don't know if it is your first playthrough) maxing it out again because you shouldn't find any "rich-in-smoke" areas outside of Nar Shaddaa and one or two gased rooms.

I'm currently on Telos. Good to know there aren't many areas with smoke. Currently, the laggy part is the main menu only. I guess there is no way to somehow "replace" it?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nope, I don't know any way of removing smoke from main menu. But I think it is thinner if you're following lightside and thicker if playing as darkside - it changes during playthrough, it's not static :D But it is there all the time.

The first one is one the better BioWare games, even if it was the one that started the trend of they simplifying their rule sets at every new game until they arrived at Mass Effect 2 that suddenly was a TPS instead of an RPG. (To their defence though, they used a modified version of the then-current SW tabletop RPG system, which was already a simplified version of the incredibly simplified D20 ruleset… so it wasn't exactly their fault to switch from D&D to D20.)

The second one… if you are one who likes the old SW lore and cares about it, then you'll want to claw your eyes and ears out sometimes. You know how old Fallout fans were hysterical about how Bethesda killed and raped the corpse of the Fallout lore with FO3? Obsidian did almost the same with the SW Expanded Universe with KotOR II's plot.
If you can disregard that, it is a good follow-up with a very whiny cast. (Seriously. Every damn dialogue in this game about somebody lamenting to someone else on how terrible their life is and how terrible the world is to live in. Tokyo Hotel lyrics have nothing on some party conversations.)

I still haven't played the second one, although the first one was awesome (played it on or near to when it was released). The only reason I haven't jumped on the second one yet, aside from the usual backlog and time reasons, is that I'm afraid that it won't live up to the first one. :D

The general vibe I get from "the Internet" though, is that it may not, but it's still worth the ride. So it's definitely one I should get to eventually. But yeah, I'd recommend the first one first. Be warned that it will probably feel slow though, with all the progress made in the genre in years since. But, it still felt more like "Star Wars" than the prequel movies ever did.

The first is really an amazing game. You can't go wrong with that. Let's also recommend something else. Do your research and install mods (modifications) too. You'll get the game played in an improved way by doing this. For example lot's of cutted scenes from the original, have been re-edited in the game. You might also want to check out HD textures for various areas of the game. :) It goes without saying that the mod community has done huge work in both of these games.

KOTOR grabbed me from the start, even though I was playing it on a friend's xbox a long time ago in a city not so far away.
I've played it twice since then on PC. KOTOR 2 I just recently got and tried to play it but haven't picked it back up after one or two sessions. Hope that helps!

Start with the first :). Just look around for some mods to change resolution (unless you don't mind smaller res.) and be prepared for frequent saves (games crashes a lot on new systems). In my opinion is better than the second one and you'll definitely miss a lot by not playing it.

First one is far better than the second. Second was made by a different Dev, wasn't finished properly and had a lot cut from it. Look in the workshop for the restoration.

The KOTOR series is definitely one of my favourites, so my view is a bit biased. I'd recommend you play the first game first, because the stories due tend to tie in at some point. A lot of people seem to enjoy the first one more than the second, but I personally enjoyed TSL more. TSL can be considered "incomplete", but there is a lot of fan-made stuff to fix this and restore that content. I feel the original has a better storyline, but the second has better gameplay. I much enjoyed that TSL doesn't have a level cap really, just a limit on how high you can get your skills.

Either way, I highly recommend the huge mods for either game. TSL being the TSLRCM and M4-78 Mods, and for KOTOR I recommend the Brotherhood of Shadow mod. Although, there has been a new mod recently released for KOTOR that has peaked my interest. KOTOR Restoration Mod
