mango or papaya?

Every time I've bought a papaya it would taste like slightly sweet vomit. Am I picking spoiled fruits or is it just overhyped?

I'm not sure. Different people taste things differently. Most people don't realize it but tongues are as diverse as finger prints. I usually eat dried papaya in trail mix and it tastes just fine to me.

Most dried fruit has added sugar. Figs, raisins and dates are sweet enough to be sold in their natural state.
Natural dried fruit loses it's color and is less sweet so it's a bit harder to find and pricier.

Papaya is the only one I haven't tried. Looking at pictures, it looks complicated to eat. Brains I have only tried once, and never again. Mango is okay in drinks, but I don't have it that often. Potatoes all the time.

I like pretty much all fruit but something about the texture of mango is just great, the flavor is also not too sweet or tart but seemingly just right. I love blueberries for tart and strawberry for sweet. Hm just so many options.

When I can get good mango, I'll enjoy it but it's not often. They are shipped in pretty poor conditions over here.
Papaya can be pretty bland when it's not just ripe. It's very much like melon when it's ripe. Delicious with a little lemon and honey... and rum.
Neither beat a good watermelon though.

If you mean unripe by poor conditions you just have to leave it on the counter for a few days and it will turn out great like 90% of the time.

Nah. I wish. In France mangoes are sourced in various places. You would think Africa would be way closer but most of the time they are shipped from South America or "France" (meaning Reunion which is next to Madagascar) and they take the long way round. So yes they are harvested while extremely unripe and they "mature" on the way, which results in a sticky, gooey, but stringy mess that tastes kinda bittersweet.
I get good ones from Burkina Faso (or when we have them on the menu at my workplace) and they are just heavenly. But they're very expensive and rare.

In the country I live (Germany) they are making sausages containing pig brains. It didn't help the PISA test results though. We also get a ton of Mangos from Brazil which are unripe and taste awful but if you're patient and leave them alone for a couple of days they get quite tasty.

We usually get green bananas which are terrible but if you wait a few days they become quite good

Papaya. I'm not a big fan of it but I definitely prefer them to mangoes.
I had to google it to make sure it was the same fruit because we give it another name in here, "mamón", but I actually have a couple of papaya plants in my backyard.

I haven't eaten fresh mango or papaya fruit in a while, but I remember both being really good. However, nothing beats a good potato dish, which I can eat every day. As for brains? Not my thing.

I'll throw my hat in the ring for papaya (although I do love a good mango). I will admit it can be a bit of an acquired taste.

The smaller Hawaiian papayas are the best ones for eating fresh, IMO, but they need to be fully ripe. Most of the time that I see them in the store they are still bright green - they need to be completely yellow and a little soft before they get sweet.

The big melon-sized Mexican (Maradol) papayas, which are really common where I live, taste pretty different from the Hawaiian ones and don't get nearly as sweet. These are better for baking or adding to salads. Or just sprinkled with a little Tajín (which is great on mango, too).

I try to avoid tropical or "modern" fruits (anything that wouldn't be available in medieval Europe or ancient Greece) so for me it's neither. I'd rather have some figs or grapes.

Mango in chutney mainly (raw mango is alright, every now and then I hype myself into it, but it only ends up satisfactory), potato in basically any shape or form. I think I only ate dried papaya in muesli mixes, it tastes nice like that - I don't know how the raw fruit tastes.
