Sorry folks, I just have to get this off my heart, it's too heavy a burden to carry alone. During the last week I was running a puzzle here. Included 8 giveaways, most of them with a little CV. I delivered my gifts. Two of the winners didn't write anything, wether in the thread nor in the giveaway's comments. In the delivery email I wrote them: congratz, but what a pity you didn't write anything, I really like to read people's feedback. Guess what, all the winners answered thanking me for the gift, but these two people even didn't do that. I really hate such folks who don't even bother to thank others.

Oh my. A night of sleep and a day of work and this thread went out of control. Thank you all, lovely people of Steamgifts, for empathizing with me that much. There's a lot been said that gives me something to think too! I will read through this whole thread and will try to give my 2 cents in case I have some ;)

And also thanks alot for the funny pictures and stories you guys posted in my hidden giveaway. This time my winner was quite lovely <3 :)

The winner of my first giveaway didn't comment nor did he reply with a simple thanks after I sent him the game. That didn't discourage me from creating another ga :P Just saying. I got bigger problems than someone who's parents failed to educate him/her in being polite.

tl;dr: meh

How do you send the gifts/keys? I think that's an important factor on whether or not will the people thank you or not.

Personally when I win a giveaway if the one giving the game adds me on steam I thank him whole bunch.
However if he/she sends a game via e-mail then I feel like he/she doesn't want any contact with me so I just don't bother them.

I do it by e-mail because I don't want to have to wait around to get the GAs sent off. It can get hectic if you have like 10 GAs ending at once and you need to add all of them on steam then make sure you catch them online, etc. Just simpler to e-mail and check the GA off as sent. It doesn't mean the GA creator doesn't want a thank you.

Yeah, I get a few like that myself. One of my recent giveaways, not a post in the giveaway, no post on my profile, no email from them to say thanks. Everyone else did in one of those places.

Well, except for one other who hasn't grabbed their win yet.

I don't bother to write comments but I always thank a person, whom giveaway I won. I feel it's mandatory. Like, duh. I know how you feel, OP.

Yeah, same here. I only write a comment if there's something in the giveaway's text I'm replying to - I personally don't see a gazillion identical "thank you" messages in the giveaway as essential, though obviously it's with a good intent. But I wouldn't imagine not thanking when I actually won something.

Same here. If you win something, I feel like the least you can do is say thank you to the person.

I just had that happen a little while ago. I held a giveaway and tried contacting the user both through their Email and through Steam they never got back to me after I sent them the game and I still don't have the Gifts Received mark on my profile :/ It was like that for like 3 hours than it went back to the way it was before and I can't reroll for another winner since I'm sure they already redeemed the game.

I totally understand you. On the new Steam Gifts Site (SG V2.0) I will create a blacklist and I'll put such people on my blacklist. It's a nice idea if you want to do it.

You know, usually I don't like the idea of a blacklist. It always seemed kind of childish to me (sorry, please don't feel offended). I must admit though that today is the first day I thought of actually starting one :'(

I used to think that too. But if you really think about it blacklists just means not everyone can enter your giveaway. Just like in real life - you don't give things to people who don't deserve it.

Assholes will be assholes. Some people make a blacklist. Some people don't care.

Granted, I'm of the group that doesn't think they should comment on every giveaway they enter. But I do try to on privates after a puzzle cause the OP put in the effort to make it work out. Usually not "ty" but something related to the giveaway/puzzle. And ofc if you win, you gotta have some manners at the very least.

I say just blacklist em if you've got the time to do that.

I don't care if someone doesn't thank me after I give them something, but I am happy if I do see a thank you email/message after I send them their gift.

I always say thanks afterwards, unless they didn't email me or message me the gift and just sent it through steam without us adding each other.

I'm one of those people, I don't comment on giveaways and only say thanks if the giver adds me to steam.

I am just non-communicative and prefer to not have the last word.

Of the giveaways I've done I can't remember if I ever got a thank you nor did I care about getting one. It did not really matter to me.

Not this thread again >_>

You're giving stuff away for free. It's their job to accept it, not to thank you for it (it's optional, not mandatory). They did their part of the deal by actually accepting the result of your lottery. They won, it's not like you're choosing who will get the prize by yourself. If you like to give away stuff for free, you shouldn't give a damn about what happens next. Your goal is to GIVE something, not to GET something (even as trivial as 'thank you').

Permalink

Yeah maybe. I have a different approach to this site. I give away stuff here because I like to get in touch with people. One of my former winners became one of my best Steam friends. I don't do these giveaways to clean out my bundle list. If I wouldn't care I could just do keydrops, right?

Why not just ask people to add you in the description then? That way you will get lots more friends and a chance to find a very special one that fits you is going to increase too.

Honestly it seemed too much of an effort this time. I usually do, but I had to deliver nine gifts in total yesterday.

I have to agree with senaya on this one. Last gift I received here was sent to my mail with no other words rather than the name of the game and the key. The aim of the site is to gift games, if you want to interact with people the forum is a great place to do so.

I agree but people should also be a little more thankful in general I guess not only when they win something, It does actually feel nice when people are happy about winning the game you give them. +2

Sorry, but i find it downright disrespectful and entitled too. Only thing worse is ninjas who take key/link drops and don't even say thank you or even bother to warn other people they got it so other people won't 'burn attempts'. :/

I don't care about getting anything in return when i gift something, it's not why i do it, nor i wish to have people who get any of the gifts i gave away to come and suck up to me, nor have i gone out of my way to 'stay in touch' with people whose giveaways i won / have won my giveaways. That's not the point, not for me, anyway.

That said, i always try to leave a 'thanks' / 'thank you' in the comment section at the very least (even though i don't get that bothered if people don't do it on the comment section of a giveaway i've created).
But i do damn make sure 100% i thank someone if i win. 2 DAMN WORDS AT MOST. And i'd be pissed too, especially like OP says on a puzzle giveaway. Thankfully i never had to put up with any of that.

Don't get me wrong, you're entitled to your opinion, but i strongly disagree with it.

Besides, if OP is the one giving stuff away for free like you said, he should give a damn about whatever he damn pleases. ;)
And if he gives a damn about people not being minimally thankful, he's within his right. ;)

well spamming into the thread of givaway is not my style...occasionaly i leave a individual comment.

on the other hand, when winning something i think its just rude to not thank the giver.

I'm not talking about spamming. Something puzzle related would have been nice or even a simple bump for solved. Writing thanks for the sake of it I don't do either. I don't even ejoy reading seven pages of variantions of thx. But there were questions I asked and I really was interested in what people said. Ah well, I enjoyed all of what people wrote. There are some REALLY nice people on Steamgifts. Maybe just forget about the rest :)

I share your sentiment when it comes to no response from winners, now I just check to see if anyone in my friendslist has that game on his wishlist if I want to give something away or alternatively I pick a random person who's active on the SG forum and try to get a hold of one of the games from their wishlist at least this way you know they'll really enjoy and play it and since you either already know that person or he/she is active on SG you know you'll get a response.
This works great for me for now until we have SGv2, then I just plan on whitelisting every active forum member to do giveaways for to avoid this.

A question for you though OP; you know that you can remove comments from your steam profile right? asking this because instead of deleting spam you opted to comment warning people not to click it, just figured i'd check that's all.

I was thinking about doing it in a similar manner, but then again, gifting is just too much fun. You know, it's not just to gtét in touch by gifting, also by interacting with the people in the puzzle threads, asking interesting questions in the giveaway comments - I'm having a lot of fun here doing this.

And yeah, I know I can remove them. I've reported the guy who sent the spam link and I thought I'd better leave it there as proof, wouldn't I?

Permalink

Ah right, that way I kinda gave up on reporting anything to valve a long time ago so that hadn't crossed my mind.
About the giveaways, since most of your previous ones have relatively low amount of entries (so possibly quite difficult and requiring some dedication) you could just give people a codeword or whatever at the end of the puzzle, and ask them to add you after solving the puzzle to trade the codeword for a link to the giveaway to filter out the people that wouldn't respond to winning the giveaway, this way your friendslist would also include people interested in puzzles and things like that instead of mostly traders which is what you're interested in if i'm understanding you correctly.

I don't often comment on a giveaway, sometimes not even in the thread, but in the event of winning I always respond with my gratitude whether it be Steam chat or through email. It's amazing how some people can go without saying a word at all.

Nothing inspiring to say, just that this is how shit works. Some are polite some aren't. Since they don't spent their precious time to type a thank you, you shouldn't spent your precious time thinking about it.

I also hate when this happens to me, no thanks or any word back, during or after the giveaway. So I totally understand you. Some people are just rude and don't have manners at all... :(
I know some people who keep doing the same in my giveaways, so for the future SGv2 I will just use that new "Black List" feature and add them to that list. Period (Mwa-ha-ha... :P).
