Wiikey's ODE (Optical Drive Emulator) project for Wii U has apparently been put on hold due to numerous issues, including supplier delays and staff departures. They assumed they'd have a product launch by November but expected delays while they waited on parts.

Team Cobra claimed that they had an even better product coming out called the UDE (Ultimate Drive Emulator), but they've given even less word as to what's going on with their project. On their official forums, a new user claims to have heard a rumor that "someone" ordered production of such a device from a factory in China, but no sources I've found are reporting on this.

Why not just buy your games?

Personally, I rent. This is mostly an interest.
And yes, if you buy all of your games and have an external HDD that A) is compatible with Wii U, and B) has sufficient power (external or Y-Cable into the console itself), then you can play a large number of games, depending on their sizes. The 32GB in the Deluxe could store a few, but I think most people would use that for indie titles, saves, and just smaller games.

That's what I do - A) and B). I use discounted eShop cards that after various stacking credit card discounts I get for 20%-25% off.

Nice. The only chance I had to get discounted eShop cards, I was broke.

My thoughts? A tool for piracy I'll never use.

The Wii U would be tough to properly emulate without a bluetooth connection to a tablet, flawlessly synced screen mirroring to it, and a bluetooth gamepad or Nvidia Shield Controller. Seems like it won't really work too great. Besides, only real copies are able to go online without the risk of being banned.

This just emulates the disc drive while using the Wii U itself.
