Are Valve trying to make gems the "currency" of choice? There are far fewer of them in circulation, and they are harder to acquire outside of the Steam marketplace, meaning potentially far more $$$ for Uncle Gaben.

It's way too unstable to became a "currency".

In a single day the price of Sacks almost doubled! O.o'

You're right that it is unstable at the moment, but I suspect it will settle down over time, allowing Valve to quietly phase out keys à la Dota 2 with minimal consumer push back.

Like other people said, i hope that with the end of the Auctions, the price of them settle down a bit.

Or we'll see "no gems (re-)selling for week" too...

They can't announce it now (would affect prices way too much), when auction ends and prices fall down they'll be good to go to announce that kind of stuff.

Now that Valve have locked down cross-region trading of games, it's hard to see why they bothered making this change at all.

Wonder what the future is now for gems, given that the primary purpose of a "proxy" for real currency has now been eliminated?

Gems will never work as a currency as well as keys because every key can only be bought into circulation once someone pays valve a set price of 2.50 for it. Gems will probably always change in value depending on external factors.

The problem we would have without the way to get those keys from a source other than the Market, would be the same as we have with our current economy. It might happen, that someone that is super rich just buys, like 90% of all the gem packs, so that they will get stupidly expensive, and that single person would basically have control over the whole gem pack market.

Good thing you can still trade wallet for games through the market (seller puts up a worthless item for the price you have to pay, you buy it, he trades you the game).

Permalink

It only works with Dota/CSGO skins, maybe some more items like this, as most worthless items (cards, emots, backgrounds) are commodity, which means you always buy the cheapest one.

Yes, but the point is that there's still a way and CSGO skins won't turn into commodities since stickers can be applied to them. I find this method more convenient for both the seller and the buyer too.

This hasn't been done to prevent scamming and/or fraud in any way. They might aswell just hire a few more employees and finally get a proper fucking support and actually start banning the scammers.

I see that some traders are adopting gems as new currency stating they will no longer accept keys as method of payment. I`m not sure that gems are still stable enough to fulfill this role. Price is more or less stable today (~1 €) but what happens on Thursday when the auctions stop and gems are only usable for crafting boosters...

gem prices will fall, unless they get re-incorporated into the sale somehow. As with game trading, it will all work it self out after a few days of adjusting to the new system.

Gem prices will fall a little bit I think, but since you can still make them (as the Auction page says) there shouldn't be all too many problems with it.

It's not because of gems or any weird conspiracy, it's because of the price of rubles. All digital retailers are having huge problems right now with ruble-denominated transactions and Valve is no exception. The price of the currency has been rapidly falling, so selling items (especially internationally-traded ones like keys) is unfeasible.

And this is why they locked Brazil,Turkey and all the other regions that sell the games cheaply than store?
I think it was a matter of time untill Valve do this, and the situation with the ruble is just perfect timing to do it without looking like a bad guy.

I'm selling useless items on the market for the agreed price.
It takes a little more work but the trade gets done.

(sold Thief for 2 tf2, put useless csgo skin on the market for 3,60. Buyer buys the skin)

How about this Valve, since I can't trade my key for a week, why do you not take my money for a week? It's not enough that they hold my money in the steam wallet, but now they hold my money and forbid me from using items I bought!?
