So I'm going to be doing a presentation for Univ. trying to persuade console gamers to start pc gaming. I'm showing FPS, resolution, and cost. This is a SPEECH assignment, not some ITT class(im not attempting to tinker with the minds of your probable future console creators) University has almost nothing to do with the topic at hand. I just stated that to explain why I am asking this. This should not be taken TOO seriously, it's my assignment to a class, not a governmental bureau.

Now I have collected a bit of info and video, but you guys already know how fanboy console gamers can be. So I need some hardcore video that shows undeniable evidence that pc is a lot better. Now this has to mostly revolve around texture and VERY noticeable antialiasing. Motion blur, field of view, etc. isn't something I want to focus on too much. Because I was actually told when showing motion blur to someone that the pc was "lagging" -.-

I have been collecting mostly footage from recent FPSs, Watch_Dogs, and tomb raider. Now the watch_dogs footage is with mods, but that bring the root of the problem. A lot of the blockbuster games are ports, bad ones at that so the footage is pretty similar (when using a projector for the presentation)

I'm actualy thinking of showing footage of some ultra modded skyrim, to show fine details in textures that the pc is capable of.

New giveaway as thanks, my old one I only set for 3 hours which I think wasn't fair for everyone. Injustice: gods among us, 30.99 CV M?g?B Bump is appreciated if even for just so other people can try the giveaway, I got a lot of what I need to finalize a presentation, but more could never hurt. Page 2

So TL;DR

Any video footage that shows the huge gap between console and pc? Preferably for games in next-gen consoles.

PS3 vs PC
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hht46rZBscc

PC vs XBone
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MmmDPblc9E

PC vs PS4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu3wtz1oVSM

Something to consider is that right now PS4 and XBone are both using the same kind of GPU graphics that are in computer systems now. In a year, the difference in graphics would stand out more just because people can upgrade their PCs much easier then a console.

There is also new consoles coming. XBone slim is coming and its going to have different hardware in it then the first xbone. Which means in the near future when newer games are made you might have to look at system requirements to see if the xbox one you have at home will be able to run the game you want to buy or if you will need to buy a whole new console to play it.

Where as, I can just turn a few things down or off for newer games, still play them just fine and in a few years upgrade my GPU to play even newer games better then I can now.

Just in general PCs are better then consoles because you can easily upgrade them. Also a 2014 PC can still play a game from the year 2000, you don't have to keep around old PCs to be able to play them. PCs can do lots of other stuff too, though consoles in general are now starting to be able to do some of that stuff. No need to an "auto aim" for PCs because a mouse is far more accurate then a game pad when playing stuff like FPS games. A few years ago Microsoft was going to "allow" console players and PC players to game against each other with the use of GFWL, but in several tests they did, the casual PC player basically beat the crap out of the more hard core or professional xbox player because the mouse and keyboard made for better and faster aiming. They quickly pulled the plug and this was one of the reasons why GFWL did so poorly.

The CPU front is going to look ever more lopsided next year. A too late to be worth it Broadwell and its superior Skylake, might as well be the tipping point to get rid of the old i-###/2### series quads. Don't forget that you can safely overclock the parts a bit to match the performance of parts costing a hundred or so extra.

Now I am neutral in this debate on Console v. PC gaming, but on of my main fears is the cost aspect with the whole parts thing and the ability to physically build one. If it wasn't for this I would most definitely be 100% PC, so put alot of evidence on that front.

Also PC elitists are also some of the most toxic and annoying people I have ever had the misfortune of meeting. So there is also that.

the main reason why PC doesn't complely stomp consoles is that there's some things you can only find on consoles, though with recent trends of japanese companies making the leap to PC, that might not last.

LOTS of good points here.

If you're going to use technical info on them, you'll probably fail. They'll just go "herp derp who cares about graphics duuurrrrr".
Try and make it about games and about personal taste in games.

Show them the Steam Shop and how it's convenient to have all in one place, the 100% retro-compatibility (one way or the other: maybe launch some very old PC game, then an emulated playstation 1 game), the f2p games, the 1-5$ bundles and the day-1 prices on Kinguin for "big" games (pick the new CoD at 36€ or Lord of the Fallen at 28€).
"We don't mind supporting the developers, you just pirate stuff euheuheuhe." If you like to support a developer you can pick 2 copies and gift one (show them Steamgifts even), or buy official merchandise, no need to overpay a game to show/provide support.

If one plays a lot of multi-platoform games, console is just a waste of money. Sure a very good PC will cost more to buy at first, but then the console prices will bring that down in 3-6 months.
If one plays console for exclusive, well, they're right. If you like exactly those games, of course they should play them. You can invest the money you saved in this and have the best of all worlds.

The PC WILL require you to know how to use it and how to perform basic manteinance.
There's plenty of guides and we all know that one guy they is eager to help his friends (in my case it's myself :D).
If one is not willing to put a little time into learning how to use a tool they spent money on, it's they're choice and I can respect it.
However if lazyness is presented as an argument in a discussion, it's a neutral one at best (personally I wouldn't even accept it).

Try to pass the tech stuff in a subtle way. Start a PC with an SSD without pointing it out. Then launch TeamSpeak and have a friend connected while showing Steam, prices and emulation.

San Andreas was re-released for 10th anniversary: the PC version was HD all along. Wind Waker HD? Same as the emulated one on PC.

Show them mods and free high-quality user-generated content on Steam Workshop, only 1 click away.
Go for games. Only THEN show them how a mid-tier PC that costs a little more than a "next-gen" console can handle the same games better, plus having all the rest.

Maybe show them how the PC ports need to be castrated in order to make the console games better. Dark Souls 2 and Watchdogs, just to say 2. Of course the games are the same, but those shadows in the DS2 presentation really complimented the game.
While you shouldn't play a game solely on graphics, it's still a shame to see the work of good artists crippled 'cause the otherwise the game won't run at even 30FPS. The Evil Within: "euheuhe cinematic 30FPS was our goal all along", then the game still has frame drops, showing the real reason behind low resolution and low FPS.

Show them how outdated hardware is holding back not only graphics, but also gameplay. How having to optimize for a weak platform takes away from thinking bigger. Show them Star Citizen and the idea behind it. You can travel galaxies for bounties, or land and have a shooting. Compare it with how limited Destiny is (still funny, but limited and "old-gen" in concept and execution).

Then remind them also how easy it is on the other hand for small developers to bring their game on Steam (even too easy, we can admit it) and how this helps pushing gameplay trends forward. Pick some popular Indies that were released on PC, then ported to console for 3-5 times the price.

Despite the bad use of the meme, the MasterRace is about inclusion and choice, not mockery and elitism. It's about having better games at better prices for everybody.

Good luck in any case, I feel like it will be hard. :D

As long as we're actually being serious about the topic -- and I second everything he said -- there is one other point I hear a lot.

A lot of console gamers seem to be convinced that in order to 'keep up' you need to upgrade your parts practically yearly. Obviously overkill, I haven't gotten anything new except a larger HDD in the past 3 years, but with how often it comes up it's worth pointing out.

It's one of their best arguments, honestly. You buy one thing for a few hundred bucks and it lasts 6-7 years (assuming it's not a 360).

So. Do try to mention how often you'd actually have to upgrade if you do go cheaper and build a budget-to-mid-tier rig, and the estimated costs between buying a single console that lasts 6-7 years and the PC upgrades that may or may not be required in that same time frame.

That's a good point. I feel like this idea stuck around from the old days, when 3D graphics was new and they were pushing significally better 3D adapters (the term "GPU" is A LOT younger :D) out every single year.
People using the MasterRace meme in a bad way aren't helping either: lots of comments I see around are about 4k gaming, which requires a very expensive system. It should be about the choice for those having the money, not a silly thing to throw around.

DAM, let's not forget Oculus Rift and the support it is receiving. GTA5 will have first person view? Here's gta4 on PC, if you have the money and will.

Right now... let's just say I'm on a Core2Quad... and with a good CPU cooler (to arrive tomorrow, for overclocking) and a new GPU (will pick a 2nd-hand one in Feb-Mar) I'll make it easily through the next gen.

A lot of console players think PC sucks. The only way to show them how dumb they are is to sit them in front of a console and have them play a game. Then sit them in front of a good PC and have them play the same game, modded or whatever you gotta do to show it's potential. Videos won't change their mind, experience will.

I think consoles are for exclusive games that will never appear on PC and for fun, but seems Sony and Microsoft try to over hype console gamers by saying bullshit about "next gen graphics, technology, AI, etc", they repeat it thousands of times each event, apparently I never heard Nintendo claiming such bullshits, since they care about making their exclusive games for fun, just making an example of how it's supposed to be on consoles, even if their current Wii U is not successful, but the 3DS is very successful, Microsoft even said they plan 4K on Xbox One on their first conference when the shown the console and said more bullshit, look at them now...720p at 30 fps, some games lagging, they could just make ppl think consoles are for fun and not for "next gen" graphics and more bullshit.

But what they're doing is actually correct, because they create war between console gamers themselves, and between PC and console gamers, so this creates more and more hype, free advertisement, and more, and ppl who play consoles and don't own a Gaming PC usually own only a few games and their life is different, they don't play tons of hours everyday, they don't care and don't know about graphics, resolution, fps, etc most of them are casual gamers, they just believe in what these companies say them, this are their potential buyers, fooling them is easy. But it's not really they fault for making such non so next gen console, that can't handle games properly, because tell me what they can do for 400$? For example on PS4, I mean what they can fit there in terms of good hardware, and also we had and have a economical crisis, so making a more expensive console was unacceptable.

I like consoles, but prices for games specially for consoles and specially in EU raised a lot latest years, plus Season Pass on each game and tons of DLCs, and Gold, Platinum, extra, etc Pre-Order versions even more expensive, with more useless stuff and monthly multiplayer payment. And buying a console for just 3-5 games you like to play(2 of them AAA that you will beat and forget) is not worth, nowadays it became a very expensive thing.

+1 i also believe Nintendo has their own place as an actual console. They produce their own games so they can make their own system, and they have their own innovative controllers. Their wiimote and their new on screen tablet thing is something they can call their own. XboxOne? Kinect? what do they own ur body now? PS4 has their own movement thingy but i won't bash them cus they don't really make a big deal about it.

i think part of the problem is the ease of use generally wins out over better hence why console games are still used no tweaking,no mods needed to make it better,no upgrades to play better games

it is pretty much plug and play so trying to convert those type might be a challange

i like pc gaming but sometimes i hate it because of the shoddy ports and the lack of support for older games to work on a new OS where if i had a console as long as it worked i could play any game that was made for it pretty much at anytime

but i also love the pc for the mod support for games like Fallout,Skyrim and others, the more freedom, the cheaper prices usually if you can hold off on day one that is lol

the indie games are a plus but i am more likely one few that still use there pc for more then just gaming where most pc gamers now a days pretty much only use it for gaming

so while i admire your effort and hope you do good i would not expect to convert to many

but i will not call console people dumb or clueless because they choose one platform over the other that is just being closed minded just because something is better does not make it the clear choice

pc gaming is still not the cheapest way to play games despite the steam sales and other sales and what not there is also other cost of hardware if it fails or needs to be updated and the inititial cost if nobody has anything to start with or worse just has a old pc for basic needs

bottom line ease of use and price make the console still a popular thing

console=400+plus a couple games 550-600 depending on location and taxes, plus you can trade in games you just bought towards others or sell them can not really do that on the pc anymore

the pc if you start from scratch and want one that will play games for awhile you will need to spend about 750 or more surely you could get one for less but if you want one to be at least as good as the new gens then anything less will not cut it unless you get used

these are U.S. prices

none the less i still will stick with the P.C. i still have my 360 but now it just collects dust might just sell it but i kinda keep it around in case my pc goes down at least ill have something to play until it got fixed

anyhow good luck with your presentation

well in worst case scenario for me, is that they don't convert or care much for what i say. But deep down they will know which platform is superior. Well you don't need the TOP tier GPU to compete with the consoles, so with price it matters with indivuduals

Don't waste your time presenting an argument for how PC has better graphics. One primary failure of a paper or presentation is when the creator makes an argument for something that is an obvious fact. No gamer, console or otherwise, can make a serious claim that PC graphics aren't capable of superior output to consoles.

The primary arguable point here, which you should be focusing on, is that obtaining this higher quality gaming experience is in fact NOT more expensive than console gaming, and mostly likely is actuality cheaper over time. The crux of any console fanboy argument is that they aren't spending $2000+ on a gaming PC as opposed to a console that costs a few hundred dollars. Present your position showing how consumers can obtain the higher fidelity gaming experience that PC's provide at a cost equal to or LESS than a console only gamer. (e.g. build your own PC, get parts online/sales, free online gaming unlike the monthly fees of XBL/PSN, PC games are always 75% off or 6 for a dollar in bundles while console games are regularly $60 each, etc.)

I have a total of 5 desktop computers - from Celeron Dual-Core with Intel X4500 to Core i5 with Geforce 760. Laptop with core i5 and 630M. Plus two Rasberry Pi's, Tablet and two Smartphones (assuming that you can still call Xperia X10 a smartphone) And four Consoles - NES, PS2, PS3 and Wii U. Guess on which platform I play most...

  1. PS3
  2. Wii U
  3. Smartphone (The more powerful one)
  4. Laptop
  5. PS2
  6. Desktop PC
  7. Other

Now, how will you prove me that anything what PC can offer will beat "Heavy Rain", "Little Big Planet" or "Mario Kart" Just find me a game with comparable gameplay. Just show me which games with which mods and DLC will I have to install to spend my time at least equally enjoyable as in these three games. I mean - who cares about how many pixels are shown on screen? It is not a tech demo, but Video Game. I want to have fun while I play. Come on - want to prove that PC is better than consoles? Find similar games on PC which are better.

Oh, and my favorite PC game is Civilization V. Try to find console game similar to this one.

You can't argue with exclusives, I just think if consoles didn't exist anymore and exclusives went away for every console(besides Nintendo they do what they want) it would be better. Exclusives is an argument that doesn't have to be.

my opinion:
heavy rain is inferior to farenheit in almost all aspects, it choices are as bad as the ending for mas effect 3.
Little big Planet has no challenge and is boring.
mario kart is like sonic all stars transformed,in fact, i would say that the latest mario kart borrows a lot from it.
PC is diferrent to console, i think the reason people buy consoles is because they are "casuals at heart" by that i mean that they play mostly relaxing games with little to no challenge or creativity.
I mean no ofense but how can you say that pixxels on screen don't matter? if i'm playing at a 40'' screen how can i play games at less then 720p and at 60hz? PC offers always that quality and it's more or less future proof while consoles barely play at those resolutions.

I think that to argue effectively you should find out what console gamers want and why they think that PC doesn't answer that, and then try to show them how the PC can be better for them. Just going for an FPS/resolution argument won't win you anything if that's not the issue for console gamers. It may be that the Steam Big Box experience is more important, or whatever.

Still, you probably won't convince many. It's like you were trying to convince me that I should switch from mobile gaming to PC gaming. Sure, there are a lot of good things about PC gaming compared to mobile, but for my current needs my Android tablet trounces the PC.

^ This.
Also, don't try to convince anyone anything. You must present the case so they come to conclusion on there own. Convincing is doing it almost with a force, but if they begin to see what you see.
Maybe you shouldn't even refer anything to consoles, because they already know everything about it, but in stand show them what PC as platform has to offer. Showing them same features that consoles have is nice leeway. Maybe educating them on basics of PC maintenance would be smart move, because from my experience most console-gamers are afraid of it. Try avoid talking about PC upgrades, just let them see that PC is not anything scary. Also, most, if not all do have desktop PC at home, and majority use laptops during lectures, so they already know more then enough to instal new game via Steam/UPlay/Origin or any other platform.
One more point that every PC gamer knows, PC gaming is cheaper then console. In start average PC is around same price as console, but in case of hardware failure, PC modularity gives lower price for fixture, while in consoles you have to change whole device. PC games are cheaper on per-release, release, soon and long after.

Edit: I forgot one of major points: backward compatibility... your games are never going to be too old to play.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

"backward compatibility... your games are never going to be too old to play."

HOW DID I FORGET THIS.

With PC games you don't need to wait for an HD re-release one or two console gens later -- only to pay full price for the damn thing all over again -- if it was on PC once, it'll always be available somehow. Hell, Zork is still available.

Just might take a little work with OS-specific problems that aren't always fixed as easily as using compatibility mode or other 'simpler' fixes.. like Fallout 3. D:

Sad thing is, most of the games that seem to get HD remakes or re-released are console specific. Zelda games, Final Fantasy games, etc.

Not true. In my 15 years of using PCs, I've bought 3 configurations, each lasted long enough. And all where in same price range as consoles of their time, just little extra is a monitor, but today I can plug my PC in my TV same way as my monitor.
As for cost factor, I play most games on high settings, some on ultra.

my GPU on my broken computer atm is a GT610, which is just a redone GT520, and that thing cost $40 and it had a $20 rebate so a possible price of $20. and I rune unmodded skyrim on high, and recentish games like Tomb Raider(2013) on high at 1600x900. $20! granted I prob can't play games like shadow or mordor on anything but med to low settings but atm the game costs triple my GPU, so that's a pretty invalid argument. Im sure any GPU worth at least $100 would be a lot cheaper and better than next gen console.

And from looking and researching from all this stuff. It looks like if you played your PC games on 30FPS(for whatever dumb reason) you might be able to get a similar experience to console and better graphics. This is something Im not sure of though, and not really something I feel I want to test for anyways

Issue that I see from console games, they only refer to ultra high-end rigs, and that is why they don't think there is no good PCs for low price. But in reality most PC gamers use mid range configurations, but one with high-end are louder due bragging rights.

You seem to be under a misunderstanding about 'Watch Dogs' Sweet FX, it is not a Mod. It's a config file, the devs lowered some values so it could run on consoles, the 'mod' replaces those values with the original ones designed for PC. So rather than a mod, it simply restores the game to the way it was originally designed to be.
The High-res texture pack on the other hand is of coarse a mod, but even with out it the game looks many times better.
