Now this is potentially some big news.

Remember at the start of the year when Steam announced new curencies on Dev Day?.

Seems like it's finally coming on September 16 for some countries. Just got an email about it a few hours ago. FYI Steam is looking to support the Australian dollar, the Canadian dollar, the Indonesian rupiah, the Japanese yen, the Malaysian ringgit, the Mexican peso, the New Zealand dollar, the Norwegian krone, the Philippine peso, the Singapore dollar, the South Korean Won, the Turkish Lira, the Thai baht, and the Ukrainian hryvnia (in the future). Not all the countries will have their currencies changed on Sept 16, but many will.

Local currency conversion dates

So, lower prices or terrible conversion rate? Guess it depends on your country. The retailers in my country seems to price their products at roughly the same price as Steam, with disc versions 2 to 3 dollars more expensive.

Email I got

Edit: Wow some stuff are actually cheaper now for me. L4D2 and Deus Ex are ONLY $5 SGD ($4 USD) for me now!

Edit 2: Canadian Dollar and Norwegian Krone to be added on 8 Oct. Stay tuned for price changes!

Origin has games in my regional currency, with region pricing specific for my country, which is a large part of the reason why I don't really use origin (I don't mind the client, it does some things better than Steam actually), as games are noticeably more expensive on Origin than its competitors. If steam does the same thing, even more of my money will be diverted to sites like Greenman Gaming, GOG, Gamer's Gate and so on (and I might be even more inclined to trade with Russians).

Origin's currency conversion rate is actually pretty good for my country, it costs exactly the same as it would in the US store.

I doubt the price is going to change much, if at all in my country/region.

No you don't

It wont change the price at all. 50 euro ? Oh well, here's your 210 PLN
Meanwhile in any PL store - 120-180 PLN.

No sane PL person buy games at Steam at their full price. Sales are different thing, but when it comes to retail price you will get every game cheaper in any PL store

Oh well, you probably know that

Yes we want PLN ! @Kafar Skąd wiesz, że zastosowaliby taki przelicznik ? Rosjanie mogą mieć taniej to niby czemu my mielibyśmy mieć drożej ?

Czemu dają waluty jakichś ukrain i uzbekistanów, a nas ciągle pomijają :D

Hey, let's pick all the countries in a circle around China... EXCEPT FOR China, because fuck those guys!

Or maybe this is better for us, who knows how it will pan out, but as a developing country really the pricing here should be like Brazil or RU/CIS not in full USA USD.

It's upto Publishers to set prices. Valve('s guidelines) doesn't use $1=1€ pricing.

Do you have a source? I think it actually does, or it's very close. At the very least, they suggest adding a "normalized" 20% VAT to the USD price.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah VAT is added and then rounded to x.99 or so. Thus $29.99 = 27.99€

Edit: There's video on Youtube that shows some of pricing table.

What are the regional prices like in Norway? Over here they do the whole 1€=10sek, which last time I checked was ~12% price increase, and if my memory serves, 1NOK > 1SEK.

Haha, I'm just waiting for that moment when everything is priced same as people see prices now. People will get mad and get ripped off because the prices will be almost 2x higher in their currency...
