The Elder Scrolls is a long game series that reached its fifth installment in 2011. My first Scrolls game was Morrowind and I recall the awe it produced when I first time opened the world map. It also gave me as player a new kind of experience of freedom. See that hard to reach mountain castle above you? Just pop levitation spell and fly there.

After Morrowind it feels that Bethesda keeps simplifying their game mechanics, though at least some new features were added. The story and characters in my opinion have been pretty dull for an RPG and combat is way too simplistic whack-a-mole. But the experience of discovering new locations and journeying through the land is nice.

Seems so many have played this game. Is there some reason why you haven't yet tried shouting at people?

This why. When the developers themselves resort to using fan-made mods, and quite a good number of them, to feature their own game on their live streams, that shows that even they know that the game itself is just a framework, an empty shell of a map that couldn't be even hold interest for an hour or so for the audience. Bethesda Game Studios may have probably the best open world map makers in the industry, IMO far surpassing even Rockstar, but their games are just shallow dungeon crawlers with one single exception, Morrowind. And even Morrowind is the kind of game that is usually modded to hell, because, let's face it: how many avid TESIII gamers could tell me right now, without looking up anything on the internet, the central questline of the game? You know, the story you are supposed to be involved in in that role-playing game. Sure, everyone can tell me where to find what, which NPC holds which über-level item, and many, many side-quests, but what is the central plot the all game is supposed to be about?

I was one of the persons wich absolutely loved Skyrim. Spent far more than 100 hours at it. Was one of the few games where I was even motivated to collect all archivements (wich was not possible on 360 where I played it, since one of them was bugged :/).

I'm not saying that's the case for every person who disliked the game, but: maybe you played the wrong class? I tried different ones and found being a mage or espsecially a warrior type really, really unstatisfieing since the battle mechanics for them just didn't feel good., Playing as an archer or asassin on the other hand was a lot of fun.

maybe you played the wrong class

I've tried some different ones, but in Skyrim there is not really a big seperation in the classes. Magic in Skyrim is pretty weak, so playing an all mage character is almost impossible (I love playing as a mage in Oblivion). The game really seems to be centered around melee combat and archery.

But for me it's not the class system or the combat that I didn't like, it's the game overall. Most quests are pretty boring and the open world is also pretty boring (after a while, at first it's cool, but it get's boring real fast). And then there are the dungeons... They all just look the same, with a different layout.

I wouldn't say so. I think the choice of class makes a big impact to the overall experience. While being sneaky felt fun I really didn't like the melee combat since it just didn't feel good. The enemys felt like puppets. I could feel no feedback when I hit them besides that their energy bar went down and it made absolutely no difference if an enemy raised his shield or not. It was just hitting and hitting him until he's dead either way. Stole much of the atmosphere in my opinion.

But I can totally remark what you are meaning by some of your mentioned points. I'd nowadawys probably even agree with some. The similar dungeons for example. And I agree that gameplaywise Skyrim is everything else than a perfect game. Dunno how to explain it but the world and the mood of it just hit a nerve at me, so that I could forget about the deficits while playing it. Guess it just completely drew me into it's world. : )

Perhaps different classes produce a different gaming experience but I don't think they matter that much. It is pretty easy to make a hybrid character anyway. I keep using stealth, magic and melee bashing with a single character.

Whenever a sale came up and I wanted to buy it, I found something else and forgot about it.
Hopefully one day the legendary edition will get higher discount and I'll finally play it.

Never had a chance to play it, it's discouraging that it requires a lot of time. I've heard mixed opinions about this game, some people say it's boring, others declare it's their favorite game. I don't know. Definitely I'd like to try it one day. Maybe not tomorrow but as soon as possible.

I've never played this game, and I don't know exactly why. Having a short affair with ES Arena and Morrowind I simply wasn't attracted, or my attention wasn't caught. But somehow this game managed to catch one of my friends who hasn't played an rpg(not even Diablo 2... ) in his life. So I don't know.

Skyrim is a game more for modders and I did not have a gaming rig until 2015, so I felt I missed the high point of the game's life.
