I also forgot to mention the Assassin's Creed franchise. Just got started with it, finished AC1 and started AC2, and I do believe I am in love with the franchise. :P

It kind of went downhill for me after Brotherhood but still good nonetheless, I have yet to play Black Flag and heard good things about it! Unity looks appealing so hopefully is good without the bugs, assuming it will be fixed by the time we play them!

I was mainly interested in AC2 and Black Flag, but everyone recommended to play them in the correct order, so I did. Someone knew I wanted the first game, so they gifted it to me on my birthday (nice surprise!). I played it recently, and wow, it was great!

Now I bought AC2 and started playing it, but my brand new hard drive just died, so I'm waiting for a replacement from the manufacturer. So far, I loved AC1 and I still can't say about AC2 since I just started, but it seems great as well. I might just get the whole franchise eventually.

AC2 is regarded as the best in the series and I also would label it that so far! or Brotherhood! Both great games, I never completed the first AC game because I found it quite competitive but it is not a bad series at all, though I did dislike Revelations alot and I had to force myself to complete it!

Sucks about your hard drive! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Did you see the leaked Assassins Creed game based during the Industrial Revolution, even though its scary how annually these games are releases, it does look great!

You can pretty much skip AC III because it sucks(easily the worst in the series) and story wise you won't be losing much. Revelations was pretty annoying and boring too, but at least it still had Ezio as the protagonist, so that breathed a little life into it. But when you step in Connor's shoes, you know it's all gone down the toilet. Thankfully, Black Flag managed to pull the series out of the shit pool in which it fell.

they are all great in different ways :) I have played them all (apart from unity) and I love the first (for being original) and Black Flag (keep in mind you will sail your own boat to different islands)

While nothing can beat the open nature of MMO's and their real world characteristics such as actually being populted by real people, for single player ones, Sleeping Dogs always stuck with me for being so fucking refreshing... Hong Kong is beautiful.

Legit, WoW in it's prime for example was legendary (maybe it still would be for newbies).

i know you said no mmo but i think for the fact you want a single player experience this mmo i have in mind would be awesome for you. The issues with it only come from the multiplayer side of things.. give tera a go. The single player experience is great..failing that and you want a total 1 player game, i really enjoyed dead island and DI: Riptide.

i heard rumors of a game named 'real life'.

its supposed to be purely offline with extremly realistic graphics, though the story is not that good.

most people need a lot of time for a full playthrough of that game.

no one yet complained about that game after finishing it.

It's not so bad. I would say a lot depends on your spawn point and the traits you get.

It does get annoying sometimes when those who got easymode start whining all the time.

The main problem with the game is that the pause and reload game functions are broken. Also, nobody gets out of it alive.

Still, if you enjoy the challenge of doing the best you can with what you've got, and have a good sense of humor, it can be fairly entertaining.

crappy pvp system and permadeath, slow paced traveling system, no steamachievements or tradingcards. and FORCED multiplayer, you would have to sacrifice alot to play it in singleplayer. no modding. would not recommend.

Ones I actually own (and enjoy): S.T.A.L.K.E.R., The Witcher, The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Saints Row, State of Decay, Sleeping Dogs, Mount & Blade, Terraria, Batman: Arkham, Betrayer, Borderlands, Dead Island, Dragon Age, Edge of Space, Far Cry, Gothic (1 and 2 are really hard to get working on most modern PCs), Just Cause, Dark Souls, Mass Effect, Red Faction, Risen, Signs of Life, Two Worlds, NEO Scavenger, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Ones I wish I owned: Omikron-The Nomad Soul, Psychonauts, Assassin's Creed, Miasmata, Dead Rising, Don't Starve, Spore, Salt, Darkwood, Rage, The Forest, The Long Dark, Starbound, Crea, Prototype, Planet Explorers, Fable, Wasteland, The Crew

I think that's enough examples, all the ones I can think of anyway. I know there are more ... more that I own and enjoyed I just can't think of them off the top of my head.

'Salt' is so good. I got it yesterday and have just been so pleased with it. There are times it feels empty, but even then it still retains its charm.

If you want a nice, relaxed, pace of exploration but with enough things to do, and a bit of combat, then I would highly recommend this one. It has even stopped me playing ED.

The Witcher, Dark Souls, Mass Effect 1 (I never played the sequels, so I don't know about them) and Knights of the Old Republic aren't open world.
The only Red Faction game with open world is Guerrila. As for Batman: Arkham series, the first one isn't open world, only the sequels are.
Psychonauts is borderline case.

I could be missing something, because I didn't play every game in the list.

Yes, yes, yes! Well, it's not so hidden anymore on the Steamgifts forum since I'm spreading "awareness" about this amazing game.

Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues

It's not what you asked in your post but, as the title says, it's one of the best open world games even if it is still in its Pre-Alpha.

I always sing the praises of The Saboteur. It has a great art style that really drives the game (everythings in B&W, except for the red Nazi stuff, until you liberate areas).
