how the users can band together for something, such as the train event every year. the people are not getting paid or anything, but the event keeps on going on every year. i'm impressed :)

One time I had to buy a winner a gift because I didn't check region restrictions for a bundle. Luckily it was on sale too.

As far as good experiences go, a very generous person sent me a game when I mentioned liking it on a thread.

Other than that I haven't really made many community experiences. But I really appreciate users making helpful threads.

Not a poll option but one of the things I value the most about our community is the many threads of support that have popped up here and there over time when a user, whether a reliable fixture in these parts, or a shyling who has been ghosting the forum, shares their feelings and need for help or a general issue with life, work, parents, grief, loneliness.

I'm always moved to see many users, some shy-lings themselves, share their experience, provide support, offer a chat or a shared gameplay to shine a bit of a light in a random stranger's darkness.

And yes threads like these that are appealing not to our rage, annoyance or offense in an effort to feel in a majority, but are actually open-minded about others and their own experience without judgment and without providing one-sided polls.

one example i remember of this is a thread icaio made about financial circumstances. read a couple in there and it seemed like the comfort people needed at the time. im glad you brought that up, it wasnt on my mind but bit by bit im recalling more threads like that. sg can seem a bit scary as a newcomer but its surprising friendly you realize after lurking a bit. hopefully others come out the woodworks whenever they may need it and get the support they need too.

Great example. There's been threads about depression and isolation too, not just during the pandemic but also then ofc, and it was nice to see people offer a hand or even just a word of support to anyone needing it.

hopefully others come out the woodworks whenever they may need it and get the support they need too.

We can only hope. After all we are too often lonely side by side and it might seem like we're imposing just reaching out of our own bubble to see what's going on over there but it can be a great comfort.

It was during the Christmas event where people put up the games they tried to win to see if anyone has an extra copy they want to give as a gift. He wrote to me about a game I wanted. I asked if I could keep him on my Steam friends list, and we slowly started chatting. At first we talked little, but we started talking more and realized that we have a lot in common. Everything flowed incredibly naturally. We became good friends and over time things just happened. Although we have only recently been dating, we have never had a fight. He has never been mean to me. He must be the sweetest man I know.

Yeah, it was a the best outcome I ever could have hoped for. I had actually introduced my nephew to that game when he was around the same age, and it made him laugh so hard he nearly hurt himself (literally laughed himself right out of his seat and crashed into the coffee table). He's 10 now, and still asks to play it when he visits. I wanted to share the game here because of the experience he and I had with it. Seeing it go to someone else who actually got to share a similar experience... I honestly don't have words to describe how that felt.

wholesome, gave him an experience he'll think about for years to come. it had to have been fate for it to have to someone that'll get the same joy out of it in the same fashion. perhaps the rng is based on that 🤔

lol understandable, the mechanics are pretty simple: https://www.steamgifts.com/about/comment-formatting

All the nice people, I can meet here actually. It's a pretty warm community for a giveaway one.

The single experience I remember very well, is this time I won Hello Neighbour, but the one who was giving it again was including a DLC/sequel, so they contacted me via steam to give me the key. But I though it was multiplayer DLC and asked them to just give it away because I was not going to play it. And after a while they came back saying that it wasn't multiplayer and gave me it to me. :)

hmm... the christmas thread as well tbh but nowhere near grand of a scale. i ended up getting the game i wanted from someone i treasured seeing in the community when i was a lurker. it makes me happy seeing them around still. another would be my first discussion post, i was struggling with setting giveaways up and learning that portion of the site but the nice users that helped who i still have the pleasure of bumping into makes my day. one more would be threads like these, just learning about you all :)))

No matter the scale, it is still a memorable event, especially since its from a treasured person, so I would not call it not grand :)

So, so, so much different! It was a smaller community back then, and the forum wasn't a popular part of the website, but it was more unique and fun for it, I think. The few who were active all knew each other pretty well, it felt like a group of unlikely, but good friends.

A lot of people moved on, but what I think killed it is a few rotten apples constantly causing drama that spilled out from a private group and became a public shit-show. Made a lot of people, even those not involved, leave because of these few users who seemingly had made it their mission to ruin the fun of the forum for everyone, then leave once they had pretty much chased away anyone who cared about the community.

Also, possibly just a personal opinion, but the forum moderation went down the drain as some incompetent people were granted moderation permissions, and a few of them constantly pulled some bullshit that made even more people leave (it was the start of what led to the end of Touhou Giveaways, as the founder of the group got fed up with the moderators enforcing rules incorrectly and interfering with group activity on the website).

So... all in all, it certainly isn't what it used to be. I'm not sure of the state of things nowadays since I barely use the forum anymore - from what I've seen, it has become a pretty standard discussion board, and thankfully doesn't seem to have anymore drama, but I barely know or recognize anyone anymore. I'm a SG grandpa going on crazy rants now. "Back in my daysssss...!" :D

wild to me to think the forum wasnt as explosive as it is today. it sounds like the people who got to get to know each other back then had a similar experience to meeting your lifelong childhood buddies at school, which in a way it already is. i cant get over how precious that mustve been.

A lot of people moved on, but what I think killed it is a few rotten apples constantly causing drama that spilled out from a private group and became a public shit-show.

figures, ive seen a good handful of comments in threads about people leaving cause of X,Y,Z overtime. makes me sad, specially when i realize just how long they been around even if i didnt know them. others did. there's also others who are still with us today and thats a blessing. been hearing drama mentioned more and more, its upsetting. im rooting for things like that, especially with private groups involved to not happen anytime soon for everybody's sake.

Also, possibly just a personal opinion, but the forum moderation went down the drain as some incompetent people were granted moderation permissions, and a few of them constantly pulled some bullshit that made even more people leave (it was the start of what led to the end of Touhou Giveaways, as the founder of the group got fed up with the moderators enforcing rules incorrectly and interfering with group activity on the website).

though i dont have a comment on that from lack of exposure, it sucks to hear that. ive had my fair share of witnessing certain mods ruin everything on other things/sites for shits and giggles or cause of a complex etc, whatever the case it hurts. i tip my hat to the group founder, likewise users who left.

but I barely know or recognize anyone anymore. I'm a SG grandpa going on crazy rants now. "Back in my daysssss...!" :D

I guess you mean the old Reddit :3. Comparing to Reddit it's pretty casual here and I like that. Reddit already turned into garbage and since I'm not a raccoon I try not to visit there unless search engines lead me. I even deleted my account last year with the APIcalypse. Anyway, it's kinda hard to find people who think exactly like you and I'm glad I don't have to do that here. There is a one common point (gaming) and rest of them depends on your exploring skills. It's like a rainbow, a lot of different kind of people are here, which is nice. To be fair, I miss the old forum culture and it's sad that instant messaging killed it Thank you Discord >:( .

oh dude dont remind me lmao the whole api thing was a DISASTER. i also was wayyyyyyyy too attached to subreddits and when mods or the communities on those went downhill it was rough. useful for actual search results, great subreddits, but man.

i like that, i should start using that. a moment of silence for the forum culture as well 🎺

Heh, it's nice to have someone to talk about stuff. Reddit was good, but like all the good things it had to end. :/ I too was a member of a couple niche subreddits that I cannot find on Lemmy. It's sad, the world is changing constantly. But it couldn't be all that bad, right? As long as we have the free internet / free speech, everything will find its way hopefully.

I don't know about your interests yet (and stalking your Steam profile only gave away you like casual games), but you're easy to talk to. And that's a hard thing to maintain. No, honestly. It is.

Hope you have a nice day/night cycle. :3

i agree. its been a good while since ive expressed anything related to reddit at the same time, feels good.

lets hope so. though not always the case, the old can get improved on and returned to us. we may not have what we used to, but im willing to bet we'll get more like it, if not greater. wont be the same, but that in itself is whats so beautiful about it all.

im huge on rhythm (ADOFAI, muse dash, intralism, 64.0, etc) and fighting games! ive mentioned liking VNs too. i like massive multiplayer social stuff but tend to stick to singleplayer games that allow me to zone out or goof around, maybe even make stories (like people playground). im not huge on shooters, adventure games, map strategy, or platformers though i like a couple. horror fanatic but massive wuss and uhhhhhhh.. animals? i like animals, not many high quality games released in that regard (like animal jam, club penguin, webkinz, that one build a bear thing, heck even moshi monsters). maybe that helps a bit lol

in terms of just me i LOVE cartoons/adult animated shows (inside job, bojack horseman, aggretsuko, arthur)
tryna get into anime more, things like summertime rendering, ranking of kings, promised neverland (yes, ik the manga is better i have it lol) catch my attention. aot yada yada. im also a big fan of webtoons :]

thank you for the kinds words as well ^^ have a good one too!

Nice to meet you. :3

It seems we have some common interests (not much) gaming-wise. Only rhythm game I love is LLSIF, sadly they will shut it down right before summer. For fighting stuff, I mostly like Mugen games. Sometimes I want to mash some buttons. It doesn't occur often though. I like VNs as well. I used to like MMOs, especially played FFXIV a lot. I like shooters but I don't have the time to play multiplayer like I used to, I try time to time, still couldn't get into Hell Let Loose for months. I guess I also don't like 3D JRPGs like I used to, they are the biggest hoarded backlog I have. For horror, I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum. However I can bear it if it's a secondary thing. Neverending Nightmares was an exception, at least it was 2D. Besides these, I really like building stuff, micro-management, RTS, isometric camera, trains, ships.

I like animated stuff over real-life depictions too. I'm mostly on the anime part but I liked Futurama, Dilbert etc. Haven't watch what you write but Bojack Horseman and Archer on my watchlist, maybe it's finally the time since they were sitting there for a quite some time. I'm kinda behind on up-to-date anime though, my sister showed me Promised Neverland (it looked depressing, haven't watch). My backlog on anime is bigger than my gaming backlog. :P Also, almost always mangas are better and easier to follow. :)
(One recommendation, watch Nichijou. You won't regret it.)

have a good one too!

Thank you. ^^

it looks adorable too ༎ຶ‿༎ຶ cant believe i havent seen it before.

mugen games is +1 in knowledge for me, not a single person ik has mentioned them nor was i aware of them. they look right up my alley! in terms of games where you can take seriously or not, you should try Brawlhalla if you havent yet. the amount of things it offers plus actual worth it value battle passes is everything.

I try time to time, still couldn't get into Hell Let Loose for months. I guess I also don't like 3D JRPGs like I used to, they are the biggest hoarded backlog I have.

that game piqued my interest but i know i wouldnt enjoy it as much as anyone else lol, i hope you can get into it again and it ends up being enjoyable. wishing you luck on the JRPGs, they're a tricky bunch.

Neverending Nightmares was an exception, at least it was 2D. Besides these, I really like building stuff, micro-management, RTS, isometric camera, trains, ships.

the name rings a bell but id have to check it out again. with building games you can never go wrong those! and as for the others its neat thats your thing, unique and exquisite taste. im beginning to fancy trains/ships myself. you probably influenced that lol

I'm mostly on the anime part but I liked Futurama, Dilbert etc.

....i actually have tears in my eyes. A DILBERT FAN? BESIDES BLANDO? i cant believe it. you dont know how excited i got lol. ratbert is my favorite! wally is my idol. i keep forgetting to get into futurama, will soon enough. i hope you're also a tintin fan!

my sister showed me Promised Neverland (it looked depressing, haven't watch).

its not that bad but its themes are kinda grim, whatever you do DO NOT watch the second season, only the first. read the manga afterwards and then decide after as they changed a lot in it lol

(One recommendation, watch Nichijou. You won't regret it.)

*noooooooooooba will remember that

It is :'( (No, I'm not crying.)

mugen games is +1 in knowledge for me

Well, it's basically a game engine that was popular on late 90s early 2000s but if you try a game made with that, you'll understand. It just feels right. I still have "SNK vs CAPCOM Ultimate Mugen 2007" on my harddisk, haven't booted it for a while though. It has sooo many characters from different games. I tried Brawhalla when it was on early access, so I guess it was a long time ago !?. There weren't many characters, 8-10?. It was not my thing back then, no idea how it is now. Checked now and it seems it changed a lot. This review under the Steam page sums up every fighting game though "get destroyed by spammers, become a spammer, get destroyed by good players, become good player, then get destroyed by spammers.". So I guess it became a good one. No idea when will I crave a fighting game next but I will keep this in mind. :)

that game piqued my interest but i know i wouldnt enjoy it as much as anyone else lol,

Tricky part is, communication is a must and I am not always in a mood. Otherwise I don't have a problem with the playing part. Wish it had a campaign or at least bots.

wishing you luck on the JRPGs

Heh, thanks I'll need that. 70 JRPGs on my unplayed / unfinished collection, even shortest ones have 20+ h gameplay.

im beginning to fancy trains/ships myself. you probably influenced that lol

hehe, I'm not trying to recruit anyone but if it picked your interest gotta warn you, it's a black hole. They seem humble but don't trust their cuteness. :D

....i actually have tears in my eyes. A DILBERT FAN?

I'm sure you can find more of us here, but yeah it's kinda rare. Yeah Ratbert is silly, and Wally even failed a free prophethood lol
Also, nothing like Elbonian mud :P

i hope you're also a tintin fan!

Huh, I watched it as a child but it never occurred to me watching it as an adult. As a person who like to watch old cartoons time to time, this is a nice idea. Thank you <3

Hmm, that's very specific. Made me kinda curious. But I have a huge backlog so I probably won't watch it for the next 10 years. I like more of slice of life anyways. :)

took a peek at it and i saw so many i was in shock lmao, this is one i have to try. its decently old so i cant be that surprised i didnt know about it. now i know!

I tried Brawhalla when it was on early access, so I guess it was a long time ago !?.

so far back oh god, i used to watch vidoes on gameplay back then to see how the games progressed and its came a long way, at a certain point it looked like it was going to genuinely die out (cant forget the whole multiversus rivalry with it). the review you showed is hilarious btw

oof, i feel the same. maybe its getting a campaign in the future? unsure if theres currently a roadmap for it or how frequently updates roll out.

hehe, I'm not trying to recruit anyone but if it picked your interest gotta warn you, it's a black hole. They seem humble but don't trust their cuteness. :D

you know what? maybe i'll hold off on those for now then lol. but someday i'll see the beauty of them, warts and all 🚂

Also, nothing like Elbonian mud :P

you're so right

Yeah, I thought exactly like that at that time. It's kind of incredible they turned the tides.

maybe its getting a campaign in the future?

I don't think they ever mentioned even close to something like a campaign. They even don't want to add bots. Maybe they will add bots once the game's popularity is getting fall off but that's not what I want of course.

heh, while it was a joke, they're indeed can be very addictive. Better to be prepared :)
I would suggest Sid Meier's Railroads! but it crashes a lot on newer Windows versions, so approach with caution. But you can always try OpenTTD, it's free, it's small, runs on a potato (maybe even bacon) and it has all, even planes.

booo!!! so lame. it would do wonders, plenty games are in need of both things cause they be deader than a zombie otherwise. may not be as fun as playing with players although if it cant withhold otherwise... they should add that. its nice regardless and one less thing to worry about. not that thats the case for this game lol, but it does gives people like yourself and others more options and comfortability.

Better to be prepared :)

Def the many unique threads, you never know what discussion you might find. And I also met some cool people and got to be part of the SGM magazine for a short time last year, which was one of the reasons why I tried doing something like it with my own reviews, and had a blast giving life to the text I previously wrote.

I don't really participate in giveaways anymore (since last summer I think), just kinda got to a point where I have enough games and don't need (or care) to get more. I wager those potential wins would be wasted on me, and it's better they go to someone who really wants to play them, not my indiferent ass.

Doubt, ha. I just realized I was chasing a fix by acquiring all these new games (via trades, freebies, giveaways, bundles, etc.). I still only went for games I am interested in playing (someday), so I was picky. But still, this is the reason why, in just 3 years, my library went from less than 200 games to 1200 games. And to be honest, after stopping all these activities last summer (the buying, the trading, and so on), I really haven't struggled to "keep clean" and not revert to my old ways—a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. There's just so many games I own that I got with the intention to play, so I should probably do that. Adding more games on top of that seems like a stupid thing to do, ha. Like, I am part of one group that rewards people for just doing certain stuff for the group by giving out free games (games from bundles and such). And I used to ask for these as I did the work, so why not get the reward? But as I said, the fix of getting a new thing (even if I do want to play it) was the main driving factor behind this, so hopefully they will now go to someone who wants to play them now, unlike me.

One thing that I can't stop is certain friends from buying me a game or two on a special occasion, adding more to my already giant pile of unplayed games. But they good pepegas, and I did bombard them with games, so not the worst case of karma, I would say.

Also, you really give out a serious unhealthy amount of positive vibes, and I'm all here for it. Def something that was missing a while back, with a certain drama, that the less said the better.

totally get it lol, fomo gets the best of us too. for a 3 year timespan thats a steady leap in games, enough selection where you can be content and not unsatisfied in terms of genres, and the amount.

And to be honest, after stopping all these activities last summer (the buying, the trading, and so on), I really haven't struggled to "keep clean" and not revert to my old ways—a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

aww right on! its not an easy thing to do and i salute you for that, for me im a wishlisting maniac 😅. at this point its a catalogue of stuff i can give to people but its an addiction in itself lol, someday i will be able to withstand the urges like you have :p

straightforward and honest, i like that. you'll overcome the backlog soon enough, by then there'll be plenty new releases that you'd enjoy far more than a lot released now and you'll feel both accomplished, astonished, and fulfilled.

im sure they are, dont sweat it. the group is serving its purpose, you made use of it and others will get to experience the joy you felt in there. the circle of life and all that haha

There is a lot I enjoy here. I thought you meant in video games. When characters I like die, that really sticks with me. Sometimes you can save them or bring them back. One in particular is your big sister in Suikoden II.

The best sg experience i have had in my sg career was the SG trivia nights that used to be held every weekend. There were like 20-30 regulars there, messing around the steam group chat hosting interesting trivia game shows, and top 10 participants would get an invite link to a private giveaway. I won Darkest Dungeon through that on a DC comics trivia night.
Good times, too bad the event's dead now. l, would have liked to sponsor it with questions and games but my financial situation back then didn't allow me to do so.
Other than that, conversations with cool people and the conrad threads are the second thing I'll hold dear in my heart

there used to be trivia nights??? how many things have i missed out on. so this is an example to creativity of the past. i like it 👍
20-30 is honestly a good amount for that kind of thing, higher than i was expecting and a pleasant surprise. doing it by top 10 is a sweet gesture. though i dont know much of anything on darkest dungeon i can understand how big of a score it mustve been to win.

if you can get or got permission if needed, you should recreate it. im sure a lot of folks wouldnt mind having that back or getting introduced to a newer event on here. if by chance thats not possible, maybe put your own spin on it with something similar but different. reignite the olden days of sg if its something you're interested in and it wouldnt be too much of a burden to do.

Honestly ? That russians deserve their bad reputation. On this website I only got problems with them. Like one winning a giveaway I did, marking as received, then a few day later switching to not received. When I contacted him through Steam to ask why he did that while the game was activated in his library he blocked me.
Had to contact support with proofs to solve the issue.
